A nation should not be judged by how it treats its highest citizens, but its lowest ones.” states nelson mandela. -We should be bettering the men and women in prison, not locking them up and throwing away the key. -Criminal Justice needs to be more about Rehabilitating and educating so we can get prisoners on with their lives, and hopefully better ones after their sentence is served.-right now, prisons aren’t doing a very good job at that
Re-arrest rate now is 5% higher than in 2002-Returning prisoners usually come back with a new, more serious crime.
44% of the prisoners that will return, return with in one year
How can we be lead to believe our criminal justice system works if 67% of prisoners return?right now We’re failing the prisoners and our country.
Why doesn’t our system work?
-(count on fingers)-The only things they know are wheat got them in trouble in the first place-All the things that they used to do become available again and they don’t know how to get away from that path- They are more than likely not educated enough to get a decent job
We need change and we need it soon. This is could change our country forever.
There are different types of rehabilhitation and each inividual prisoner would have different rehab depending on their needs but some types could include
Most prisoners will need some form of anger management
Anger management will benefit the prisoner by helping them know what to do while angry to prevent future incidents.
A lot of people have a mental sicknesses and that is the main reason they got themselves in trouble.
There is usually a bigger reason they got in trouble, like a bad childhood past. Therapists help you figure that out and treat those emotions
What good is education in prison?
Uneducated people are way more likely to get into crime that educated inividuals
The general public has a dramatically higher high school diploma rate than inmates. I think its obvious that this has a lot to with crime.
Just by a few prisons focusing on educcation a little bit, they lowered their returning inmates by 29%. That isnt just a coincidence.
The goal of prison is to serve your punishment and get out. They don’t even care what happens to you once you leave. BUT if they are more educated they will be more likely to get a job and stay off the streets, WHICH will keep them out of crime
When I first started this presentation I had no idea how I would explain how this effected life long inmates, until I found this statistic
This will make lives for inmates less terrifing, and the lives of the police officers that work with the inmates easier
So why should you high school students care?
2.3 million inmates in the us
It costs $52 million dollars to support those inmates.
Who pays the 52 mill?
Your parents. My parents. Our parents.
Unless (hold up pointer finger)
We follow these simple steps to get rid of returning inmates
This will lead to…
Which leads me to believe, like Scott westerfeld states, Locks don’t cure: they strangle.
