Communicating Climate Impacts
Probabilistic versus Deterministic
New scenarios are in a probabilistic format which can be difficult for members of the general public to
understand. As such there is a need for scientists and communicators to translate probabilistic
information into a format that decision-makers and use, e.g., number of ski days per year, etc.
Putting projections into the context of past changes has also proven to be useful in helping
stakeholders assess potential impacts changes could have on their livelihoods etc.
Perceived Lack of Significance
Stakeholders can have difficulty understanding the importance of climate change when projections of
less than 2-3 degrees C are estimated. Again context needs to be provided as well.
Both average conditions and more detailed information on extremes along with potential impacts,
needs to be provided to assist stakeholder decision-making.
