Structural Waterproofing BS 8102:2009

1. Waterproof Systems (BS 8102: 2009)
In deciding the method for waterproofing a new-build basement, it is advisable to follow the
recommendations within BS8102:2009 ‘Code of Practice for Protection of Below Ground
Structures Against Water From the Ground’.
TYPE A (BARRIER PROTECTION)
Type A Barrier protection (tanking)
A barrier to water ingress is applied to the inner or
outer surface of the structure. This takes the form of
membranes or render applied to the substrate.
DualProof is a pre-applied concrete bonding
membrane (mechanical bond) and
SilverSeal is a pre- and/or post-applied
membrane and
CEMtobent is an unique double-sealing bentonite
membrane
TYPE B (STRUCTURALY INTEGRAL PROTECTION)
Type B Structurally Integral protection
The structure is formed as a watertight
construction and requires no additional protection.
Integral systems rely on making the concrete itself
completely watertight using cementitious methods.

2. Grades of Waterproofing Protection:
Grade 1
Some water seepage and damp is tolerable depending on the intended use eg car parks,
plant rooms (unless they contain electrical equipment).
Type B – Structurally integral
Grade 2
No water penetration is acceptable but damp areas are tolerable depending on the end use
eg plant rooms, workshops.
Type A – Tanked and/or Type B – Structurally integral
Grade 3
No dampness or water penetration is acceptable and ventilation, dehumidifying or air
conditioning is necessary, depending on the intended use eg residential and commercial
areas such as homes, offices, shops.
Type A – Tanked and/or Type B – Structurally integral
