Giuseppe Garibaldi
(Nizza, 4 luglio 1807 - Isola di
Caprera, 2 giugno 1882) fu uno
dei principali protagonisti del
Risorgimento. Le sue imprese
resero possibile l’unificazione
del Regno d’Italia, proclamata
nel 1861; è noto anche con
l'appellativo di eroe dei due
mondi, per le sue imprese
militari compiute sia in Sud
America sia in Europa.

Nell'aprile del 1860, quando a Palermo scoppiò la rivolta
antiborbonica, con il tacito consenso e sostegno di Cavour,
della Francia e della Gran Bretagna, Garibaldi organizzò la
spedizione dei Mille.
Salpò da Quarto, presso Genova, il 6 maggio con due
brigantini sottratti alla compagnia Rubattino e, dopo una
sosta al forte toscano di Talamone per rifornirsi di armi e
imbastire un diversivo contro lo Stato Pontificio, raggiunse la
Sicilia, protetto da navi inglesi, e sbarcò a Marsala.
Il primo scontro con le truppe borboniche sulla via di Palermo
fu a Calatafimi: tra il maggio e l'agosto del 1860 i garibaldini –
detti, dal loro abbigliamento, 'Camicie rosse' – riuscirono a
occupare tutta l'isola, raccogliendo lungo la strada migliaia di
volontari, e vi instaurarono un governo provvisorio, con
Garibaldi dittatore, in nome di Vittorio Emanuele II.

“L’ordine dell’imbarco era stato dato per le ore nove. A
quell’ora l’ufficiale Gerolamo Bixio doveva impadronirsi
dei due battelli a vapore, Piemonte e Lombardo, … e,
caricati 600 volontari, doveva ricevere a bordo il
generale e il rimanente della spedizione… Le armi e le
munizioni e i bagagli era stabilito si caricassero nel

Questa battaglia fu un episodio decisivo nell'avanzata
delle truppe garibaldine contro l'esercito borbonico in
Sicilia, perché spianò la strada per la conquista di
Palermo.

Le misure liberali adottate dal sovrano non distolsero
Garibaldi dal proseguire la spedizione; attraversato lo
stretto di Messina, i Mille risalirono la penisola attraverso
la Calabria e la Basilicata insorte, fino a entrare
trionfalmente a Napoli il 7 settembre. La liberazione di
Napoli non significò tuttavia la caduta dello stato
borbonico, che avvenne solo dopo la sconfitta
dell’esercito di Francesco II nella battaglia del Volturno
(1-2 ottobre).

La battaglia del Volturno
Il fiume Volturno, il maggiore per lunghezza e per
estensione del bacino dell’Italia meridionale, fu teatro,
nel 1860, della decisiva battaglia che portò Garibaldi alla
conquista del Regno di Napoli.

Dopo un plebiscito in favore dell’annessione del Regno delle Due
Sicilie al Piemonte (a Napoli su 136.000 votanti i contrari furono solo
31), Garibaldi attese l’arrivo di Vittorio Emanuele II. A Vairano,
secondo recenti analisi storiche, o a Teano, secondo la versione più
nota, il 26 ottobre avvenne lo storico incontro fra il sovrano e il capo
dei Mille. Nella memoria risorgimentale quell’incontro assumerà il
significato della piena riconciliazione tra la politica sabauda e
l’iniziativa popolare; in realtà, i contrasti tra moderati e democratici
non si risolsero con quell’incontro, ma erano destinati a
caratterizzare la vita politica del Regno d’Italia.
L’impresa dei Mille si poté dire conclusa con l’ingresso del re di
Sardegna a Napoli (7 novembre), cui seguì il ritiro di Garibaldi a
Caprera (9 novembre).

Un computo esatto dei volontari garibaldini non fu mai effettuato.
È certo, comunque, che la maggior parte dei membri delle “camicie
rosse” erano lombardi (434, con un folto gruppo di bergamaschi,
163), seguiti dai veneti (194), dai liguri (156, quasi tutti genovesi),
dai toscani (78, in maggioranza livornesi). I siciliani erano 45, quasi
tutti di Palermo. Pochi i piemontesi, perché quelli che avevano
combattuto con Garibaldi nella seconda guerra d’indipendenza
erano entrati nell’esercito sabaudo.
In prevalenza, appartenevano a ceti medio-alti. La quota più ampia
era composta da avvocati, ben 250, da medici, 100, farmacisti, 20,
ingegneri, 50, e altrettanti commercianti e capitani di navi. Una
decina di volontari erano artisti, pittori, scultori, studenti
universitari. A completare il gruppo, qualche prete e una donna, la
savoiarda Rosalia Montmasson, moglie di Francesco Crispi, la quale
si mimetizzava indossando abiti maschili.
Con i Mille combatterono però migliaia di insorti siciliani e molti altri
volontari, sia italiani sia stranieri.
