Why
Connect?
What is a good

What impact
does a bad
connection
have?
How can we
get better
connections?
Why do we
need to feel
connected?

HR in Action: Navigating Turbulence
o Shallow, isolated, no feedback, can’t be vulnerable
o Increased stress, low energy, lack of motivation
o Procrastination, lack of clarity, diminished focus
o Aren't able to make a real emotional investment
o Can either give or receive, but not both
Disconnected, No Connection
The Power of the Other, by Dr. Henry Cloud
9. 9
HR in Action: Navigating Turbulence
o A preoccupation, or pull toward a person who has the effect of making
you feel bad or ‘not good enough’ in some way
o You feel inferior
o You’re always trying to please this other person, but to no avail
o They withhold praise, are critical, have unreasonable demands
o Results in bad performance, defensiveness, diminished passion
The Bad Connection
The Power of the Other, by Dr. Henry Cloud
10. 10
HR in Action: Navigating Turbulence
o Feels good, but only temporarily
o Fun, high energy, an endorphin high
o Always striving to find one more good feeling about oneself
o May stay here for a while, but after feeling some relief you go
back to Corner Two, then eventually isolate back in Corner
One, continuing the cycle
o Results in feeling bad, so eventually you seek something to
soothe the soul

Did you know?
“As long as you are alive, your heart and mind and
soul will be searching for a connection. An
“other”. Several others.
A community that will bring life, all the ingredients
of life that you need to get past the limit of your
present existence and performance.
The need for connection begins before infancy
and continues throughout life - from the womb to
the tomb. If you are alive, you need it to thrive,
period.”
Why be connected at work?
Chapter 3 Very specific relationships wire us for resilience and success, to get to the next level.
The wiring of our brains effects how we do; how we relate, how we feel, how we focus/concentrate, how we perform; it’s in
relationships that we are actually built; infants and neuroscience: connect/emphasize, regulating their emotions, solve
problems, etc. (when connections are positive, attuned, empathic, caring, support, challenging, thriving is obtained).

HR in Action: Navigating Turbulence
• You can be your whole self, the real authentic you
• Builds ownership, responsibility, and autonomy
• Makes learning and failure safe
• We thrive and grow
• Abilities are supported, but simultaneously you are held accountable
• A relationship to which you can bring your heart, mind, soul and passion
• After having a conversation with an “other” in Corner Four, you leave
feeling energized, having courage to solve problems, and confidence to
work out issues
True Connection (the best one!)
Your brain gets rewired (neuroscience) during these conversations/connections; none of us are self-made, “self-help”, help
comes from other sources…

“Leaders who are immersed in employee experience are more apt to
care about and empathize with their employees, and realize that they
are people, not numbers. This allows for a greater connection with those
who work for them, more effective communications and stronger
relationships.”
“Empathy has a direct impact on the productivity, loyalty and

Connected, motivated employees are engaged
“You're not in control of
the universe or other
people, but you are
always in control of
yourself.”
“I define connection as
the energy that exists
between people when
they feel seen, heard,
and valued; when they
can give and receive
without judgment; and
when they derive
sustenance and
strength from the
relationship. “
We need to establish
multiple connections to
feed us different kinds
of energy, because
never will one
relationship be able to
supply all of our needs

your kids and on and on."
