Coming up with product upsell ideas can be hard. So I’ve created this
doc with 11 extra upsell examples from companies that are killing it.
My recommendation? Check out these examples and browse their
websites for inspiration. Enjoy!
1. ProFlowers
ProFlowers sells flowers. But they also sell vases and gourmet
chocolates to take your flower gifting experience to the next level!
2. 2. WinZip
WinZip is a company almost as old as the dinosaurs. Yes, they still know
how to upsell! They give you the option to “upgrade” your software to
the pro version, which gets you loads of extra features.
3. 3. Elegant Themes
Next up we have Elegant Themes. They offer premium WordPress
themes. Their upsell is unique; they offer a yearly $89 plan, or you can
get lifetime access for just under 3 years’ worth of payments.
4. 4. SiteGround
SiteGround is one of my favorite hosting companies. They use a tactic
of offering three packages, with the middle package being their “best
seller”. By tagging the middle one best seller, they increase the chances
a new user picks that over the smaller package.
5. 5. Death Wish Coffee
Death Wish Coffee sells “The world’s strongest coffee”. (Haven’t tried it,
so I can’t say if that’s true or not!)
Their upsell tactic is simple - more coffee. But they also try to upsell you
to a subscription instead of a one time purchase. This is a great way to
increase that elusive monthly recurring revenue. (Hint: You can use the
BoldCommerce upsell app I mentioned to do this on your store.)
6. 6. J. Crew
You’ve probably heard of (or shopped at) J. Crew before. They, too, are
product upsell jedi. Retail stores have to be, since they rely on the
traffic that walks in the door.
They offer a “20/30” method - 20% off 2 styles or 30% off 3+ styles. This
is a way to get people to simply buy more at a discount.
7. 7. Walmart
That’s right - the big W’s got game too. They love to offer product
bundles - you buy more things together and save. This is an easy way to
increase average order value.
8. 8. Lenscrafters
Here’s a poor example of upselling. There’s no obvious distinction (like
visual cues or big obvious bullets) between the packages. This really
encourages people to simply pick the cheapest package.
This is bad, m’kay?
9. 9. California Pizza Kitchen
You could also learn a thing or two from Pizzarias. They do upselling by
letting you build your own product. An obvious choice for pizza, but you
can also use this on your own products to encourage upsells. Build a
drone, build a laptop, build a bear… you name it!
Plus, psychology makes us more likely to buy when we customize
something.
10. 10. Bath & Body Works
Bath & Body works is a pro at upselling. They’re always running BOGO
offers, bundles, and simply bigger bottles.
11. 11. Color Pop
My girlfriend is in love with Colourpop - and they’re eCommerce
geniuses. Every package they send has samples and handwritten thank
you letters.
They actually use these “free” samples as an upsell. You get to pick the
sample you get. Then, once you try it, chances are good you’ll come
back to buy it (or try a different sample). So it’s like a delayed product
upsell!
