Social Media & its effects on People
The improvement or deterioration of
a nation depends on certain
indicators or criteria and in the
present age, information technology
and its proper use are among them.
Social media has created a unique
way of fast communication and it has
intensified our communication. we
are getting the news of progress,
backwardness, advantages,
disadvantages, state and social
status, stories of success, failures etc.
within a moment.
In recent years, social
networking sites have been
the prevalent tools for
online communication
combining the interpersonal
and mass communication
competences together
(Pempok, et al;2009, Boyd
& Ellison 2007).
The contemporary world is overloaded with
various information. Its impact on humans is
huge and can be either positive or negative.
There are many informative online sites which
allow communication thanks to comments,
picture sharing, dialoguing, and even the
statistics of likes and dislikes shows people’s
attitude towards many things.
Social Media & its definition
Social media refers to websites
and applications that are designed
to allow people to share content
quickly, efficiently, and in real-
time. Social media basically means any
human communication or sharing
information on internet that occurs
through the medium of computer, tablet
or mobile. There are numerous websites
and apps that make it possible.

THE MANY FORMS OF SOCIAL MEDIA
Most of the forms of social media are not digital. It generates a large number of innovations
and Social Media is one of the biggest inventions of technology, which is now most popular
and widely used. Social media may take the form of a variety of tech-enabled activities.
These activities include photo sharing, blogging, social gaming, social networks, video
sharing, business networks, virtual worlds, reviews and much more. Even governments and
politicians utilize social media to engage with constituents and voters.
For individuals, social media is used to keep in touch with friends and extended family. For
businesses, social media is an indispensable tool. Companies use the platform to find and
engage with customers, drive sales through advertising and promotion, gauge consumer
trends, and offering customer service or support.

The effect of social media
Leonardo Cannizzaro 2017 said " the impact of social media on people and their behaviour is enormous.
in my opinion the impact is Predominantly positive but it must be borne in mind that there are or may be
negative aspect well."
Social media has gained immense popularity in the last decade and its power has left certain long-lasting
effects on people.
Jonathan Safran Foer in his article "How not to be alone " said " Each step forward in social media has
made it easier, just a little, to avoid the emotional work of being present, to convey information rather
than humanity "
According to Dr. Davilla, texting instant messaging and social networking make it very easy for
adolescents to become even more anxious, which can lead to depression."
Psychologist Dr. Mark Becker, of Michigan state University, found a 70% increase in self-reported depressive symptoms
among the group using social media and 42% increase in social anxiety.
Social media has exploded as a category of online discourse where people create content, share it, bookmark it
and network at a prodigious rate. Because
of its ease of use, speed and reach, social media is fast changing the
public discourse in society and setting trends and agenda in topics that range from the environment and politic
s to technology and the entertainment industry (Asur and Huberman, 2010).
Alter(2018) and Newport (2019), along with other academics and
prominent Silicon Valley executives in the "time well-spent " movement,
argue that digital media devices and social media apps are harmful and
addictive.
A key mechanism for effects on individual well being would be if social
media use crowds out face to face social interactions and thus deepens
loneliness and depression (Twenge 2017).
"Social media can be exhilarating, at least, at first, to connect with long
last friends," says network science expert Steven Strongatz, PhD, a
professor of applied mathematics at Cornell.
How Many People Use Social Media?
The usage of social media around the world is ever-increasing. It’s without a doubt one of the most
popular online activities that users engage in.
Social media statistics from 2019 show that there are 3.2 billion social media users worldwide, and
this number is only growing. That equates to about 42% of the current population (Emarsys, 2019).
One of the reasons for this high usage of social media is because mobile possibilities for users are
continually improving which makes it simpler by the day to access social media, no matter where
you are. Most social media networks are also available as mobile apps or have been optimized for
mobile browsing, making it easier for users to access their favourite sites while on the go.
Facebook is the Market Leader
Facebook has been shaping
the social media landscape
since its launch and is
continually evolving to meet
its user’s needs. With over
2.32 billion active monthly
users, Facebook remains the
most widely used social
media platform. Active users
are those that have logged
into Facebook during the last
30 days. Roughly two-thirds
of U.S. adults (68%) now
report that they are
Facebook users (Pewinternet,
2018).
Interestingly,
Facebook was also
the first ever social
network to surpass
the one billion
active user mark,
reaching this
milestone in the
third quarter.
Time Spent on Social Media per Day
In this day and age, we’re all slowly becoming social media addicts.
Whether it’s scrolling down our bottomless Facebook feeds on the
subway, or posting the perfect brunch photo on Instagram before
eating, social media has become inescapable. This social media
statistic uncovers that an average of 2 hours and 22 minutes are spent
per day per person on social networks and messaging (Global web
index, 2018).
The Improvements Social Media Brought About (The Positive)
Not only is it used to talk to friends, but it
is also used to discuss educational topics.
Social networking is said to increase a
person’s quality of life, and can reduce
health risks. Many people report that
they have not had any negative
experiences with social networking, and
schools are starting to look at it as an
educational tool (Thelwell, 2006).
Social Media Can Benefit Mental Health Too
Emotions expressed online affect your mood. It not only helps to relieve social isolation but also
open new communication pathways and offers much-needed support. It allows people to share
their thoughts without revealing their identity. And it develops within people an enhanced talent
of self-expression without any fear.
Social Media Is a Way to Save Lives
Lives are not only saved only by 24-hour suicide prevention hotlines. Spreading awareness and motivating people is
important too. And simply assuring people that they are not alone – or the only ones with their set of problems – can be
really important for some. Large numbers of websites now offer support through social platforms. Such websites are
allowing people to share their experience with others and motivate them without fear of revealing their identities. What
can be better than saving a life? Isn’t everything else secondary?
Social media isn’t all about establishing fake identities and self-image issues. It can be a tool of great benefit for everyone
who’s using it, if it is used sensibly. The possibility to instantly connect with the ones we care about has brought about
many positive changes to people’s lives.
It Can Save You in Case of an Emergency
During a tornado season, the interconnectedness social media platforms offer
can be of great help. If people see bad weather approaching on the horizon,
they can report it instantly on Facebook or any other platform. This has
already saved hundreds of people in the United States in 2011.
Having the information about the approaching tornados sooner allowed
people to get to safety faster and they had more time to prepare. The same can
apply to any other disaster scenario, where quick communication can be the
key to avoid any harm or even to survival.
Enhanced
Connectivity
The line between enhancing our
communication and relying on social
media for it is very thin. It necessarily
doesn’t have to take us out of the real
world to provide us with some useful
tools. In fact, it can definitely do what it
was made to do. To cultivate and
strengthen relationships with others,
because what better option do, we have
to stay updated with friends on the
other side of the world? Or if we feel in
a really bad mood, social media
provides us with the possibility to
engage with a friend, which can be a life
saver sometimes.
It Can Be Used as a Voice to Reason
A lot of people are using social media to create a voice to the voiceless. These
people seek to bring awareness to certain social issues. They help people with
disabilities and less advantageous social backgrounds.
It’s a Place for Content Discovery
Social media makes it infinitely easy for you to find content that serves your
interests. It also offers an opportunity to creative individuals to showcase their
work or market it as a product. This makes people think outside the box and
allows them to come up with content that shares valuable information.
Facebook can be a great place to discover amazing educational materials
regarding various topics. It can also help people discover skills that are
necessary in the real world. we just have to first dig through all the useless
commentary.
Social Media Marketing
Social media has created a
brand new phase in
marketing, because it
provides interaction. Today,
marketing isn’t just about
broadcasting information,
but engaging in a
conversation with potential
clients.
Businesses use Facebook and
Twitter to establish a
reputation, a stronger online
presence and to build their
brand.
Numerous businesses have
created profiles that provide
detailed information about
the business to advertise in a
low-cost way (Roberts, 2008).
Social Networking does not
just benefit individuals, but
it also benefits businesses
as well. These sites allow
businesses to advertise and
market services to a large
audience, and a profile is
free to set up (Gillin).
Businesses will gain more attention on
social networks because the business
profile is available to for all users of the
social network to see. Also, businesses
like to use social networks to learn
what potential employees are like, and
make decisions based on the
information provided on the person’s
profile (Ellison, Steinfield, & Lampe,
2007).
Helps in Education System
Sixty percent of students on social networks have said that they talk
about education, and 50 percent specifically talk about school work
assignments. These students seem to have an extraordinary set of
traditional and 21st century skills including communication, creativity,
collaboration, and leadership skills and technology proficiency. Parents
are expecting schools to take advantage of using online social
networking to educate children, but to do so in a safe way. Some public
schools have created a secure social network for its student to be able
to communicate with other students, and to do so in a safer way
(National School Board Association, 2007).
The Toxic Reflections of Social Media (The Negative)
According to Dr.Dauilla,
Social media is
inadvertently leaving
youth susceptible to
become overly self-
conscious, anxious and
ultimately depressed.
An addiction
It’s Incredibly Addictive we have all become addicted to our computer screens
one way or another. Whether it’s a game, your favorite series or social media.
Most experts have already proven that internet and computer addiction is a
real thing. We just have to go out to the street and see it for our self. People
are constantly hooked on their phones, seeking a distraction. By now, there
might even be a Facebook addiction disorder, because it perfectly matches
the criteria of an addiction.
The Illusion of Control
If we really double down on it and spend some time crafting a decent social media profile, we can
really seem like we got our things together. It can actually make we believe that if we work at it, it
can improve how beautiful we are.
Social media are the primary channel through which fake news and other types of misinformation
are spread online (Allcott and Gentzkow,2017).
There are many aspects that you can’t control when it comes to how we look and that’s
completely okay. But with social media, we have a choice to post a picture that make us look
thinner, or at least censor the bad parts. we can then just sit back and enjoy all the approval we’re
getting for our looks through likes and comments. All that sweet attention keeps flooding in,
because all the insecure girls and boys need their dose. Girls can do some awesome makeups,
show their curves, while guys can play the alpha male.
In the past, we had to at least watch a movie or get a magazine in our hand to see thin celebrity
bodies. But now, there’s an endless stream of such images if we just take our smartphone in our
hand.
A Fear of Missing Out
Studies conducted in 2016 have shown that people, especially teens and young adults who spend more
than two hours on social media sites, are much more likely to show psychological distress. Constantly
seeing their friends and even people they don’t know having the time of their lives can be quite
depressing. It makes them think that they’re missing out on so many things while others are enjoying
their lives. They follow a sort of compare and despair attitude.
This is partially why people feel isolated when using social media. They’re constantly comparing
themselves to others as they scroll through the news feed.
Judging others and themselves how they add up in the crowd is pretty unhealthy. We constantly seek
to find out whether we’re better or worse than our friends, which will make us feel bad either way. Self-
comparison in itself is a very destructive habit. It is also linked with other depressive mental symptoms.
The Rise of Cyber Bullying
Cyberbullying is a growing concern, due to the horrific effects it had on teens over
recent years. With growing social media platforms, anyone can be subjected to trolling
and bullying. Everyone had at least one friend who posted an unwanted picture of him
or her . Sometimes it doesn’t stop there and people are made laughing stocks in a
matter of hours. People are much more confident about throwing around insults than
they are in real life. Most of us use social media in some part of our day. Statista
statistics claim, “In 2016 there is 78 percent of U.S. Americans had a social media
profile, representing a five percent growth compared to the previous year.” This number
will increase as we rely more and more on technology.
However, people have always been looking for ways
to connect and network with each other. And, in
this age of digitisation, people have found ways to
be socially active on the internet, which is possible
with the advent of the numerous social networking
platforms and apps. Now, even relationships begin,
grow and end on social media. People no longer
need a personal handshake or face-to-face
meeting.
Social media doesn’t change anybody into an
egoistic selfieholic, it only reveals them. While
there may be too much personal broadcasting
going on through these sites, that’s not what they
are all about. They can both genuinely connect us
and help us communicate more efficiently, or just
feed our egos and our need for others’ approval. At
the end, how we use it depends on each of the
individual decisions we make.

Social media and its effects on people

  • 1. Social Media & its effects on People
  • 2. The improvement or deterioration of a nation depends on certain indicators or criteria and in the present age, information technology and its proper use are among them. Social media has created a unique way of fast communication and it has intensified our communication. we are getting the news of progress, backwardness, advantages, disadvantages, state and social status, stories of success, failures etc. within a moment.
  • 3. In recent years, social networking sites have been the prevalent tools for online communication combining the interpersonal and mass communication competences together (Pempok, et al;2009, Boyd & Ellison 2007). The contemporary world is overloaded with various information. Its impact on humans is huge and can be either positive or negative. There are many informative online sites which allow communication thanks to comments, picture sharing, dialoguing, and even the statistics of likes and dislikes shows people’s attitude towards many things.
  • 4. Social Media & its definition Social media refers to websites and applications that are designed to allow people to share content quickly, efficiently, and in real- time. Social media basically means any human communication or sharing information on internet that occurs through the medium of computer, tablet or mobile. There are numerous websites and apps that make it possible.
  • 5. Definition "social media interactive computer mediated Technologies that facilitate the creation and sharing of information, ideas, career Interests and other forms of expression via virtual communities’ networks.” - Wikipedia The definition of social media is "the relationship that exist between network of people " (Walter & Riviera, 2004) “Online technologies and practices that people use to share opinions, insights, experiences, and perspectives with each other.” – tvb.org “An umbrella term that defines the various activities that integrate technology, social interaction, and the construction of words and pictures.” – Anvil Media
  • 6. THE MANY FORMS OF SOCIAL MEDIA Most of the forms of social media are not digital. It generates a large number of innovations and Social Media is one of the biggest inventions of technology, which is now most popular and widely used. Social media may take the form of a variety of tech-enabled activities. These activities include photo sharing, blogging, social gaming, social networks, video sharing, business networks, virtual worlds, reviews and much more. Even governments and politicians utilize social media to engage with constituents and voters. For individuals, social media is used to keep in touch with friends and extended family. For businesses, social media is an indispensable tool. Companies use the platform to find and engage with customers, drive sales through advertising and promotion, gauge consumer trends, and offering customer service or support. •
  • 7. The effect of social media Leonardo Cannizzaro 2017 said " the impact of social media on people and their behaviour is enormous. in my opinion the impact is Predominantly positive but it must be borne in mind that there are or may be negative aspect well." Social media has gained immense popularity in the last decade and its power has left certain long-lasting effects on people. Jonathan Safran Foer in his article "How not to be alone " said " Each step forward in social media has made it easier, just a little, to avoid the emotional work of being present, to convey information rather than humanity " According to Dr. Davilla, texting instant messaging and social networking make it very easy for adolescents to become even more anxious, which can lead to depression."
  • 8. Psychologist Dr. Mark Becker, of Michigan state University, found a 70% increase in self-reported depressive symptoms among the group using social media and 42% increase in social anxiety. Social media has exploded as a category of online discourse where people create content, share it, bookmark it and network at a prodigious rate. Because of its ease of use, speed and reach, social media is fast changing the public discourse in society and setting trends and agenda in topics that range from the environment and politic s to technology and the entertainment industry (Asur and Huberman, 2010).
  • 9. Alter(2018) and Newport (2019), along with other academics and prominent Silicon Valley executives in the "time well-spent " movement, argue that digital media devices and social media apps are harmful and addictive. A key mechanism for effects on individual well being would be if social media use crowds out face to face social interactions and thus deepens loneliness and depression (Twenge 2017). "Social media can be exhilarating, at least, at first, to connect with long last friends," says network science expert Steven Strongatz, PhD, a professor of applied mathematics at Cornell.
  • 10. How Many People Use Social Media? The usage of social media around the world is ever-increasing. It’s without a doubt one of the most popular online activities that users engage in. Social media statistics from 2019 show that there are 3.2 billion social media users worldwide, and this number is only growing. That equates to about 42% of the current population (Emarsys, 2019). One of the reasons for this high usage of social media is because mobile possibilities for users are continually improving which makes it simpler by the day to access social media, no matter where you are. Most social media networks are also available as mobile apps or have been optimized for mobile browsing, making it easier for users to access their favourite sites while on the go.
  • 11. Facebook is the Market Leader Facebook has been shaping the social media landscape since its launch and is continually evolving to meet its user’s needs. With over 2.32 billion active monthly users, Facebook remains the most widely used social media platform. Active users are those that have logged into Facebook during the last 30 days. Roughly two-thirds of U.S. adults (68%) now report that they are Facebook users (Pewinternet, 2018). Interestingly, Facebook was also the first ever social network to surpass the one billion active user mark, reaching this milestone in the third quarter.
  • 12. Time Spent on Social Media per Day In this day and age, we’re all slowly becoming social media addicts. Whether it’s scrolling down our bottomless Facebook feeds on the subway, or posting the perfect brunch photo on Instagram before eating, social media has become inescapable. This social media statistic uncovers that an average of 2 hours and 22 minutes are spent per day per person on social networks and messaging (Global web index, 2018).
  • 13. The Improvements Social Media Brought About (The Positive) Not only is it used to talk to friends, but it is also used to discuss educational topics. Social networking is said to increase a person’s quality of life, and can reduce health risks. Many people report that they have not had any negative experiences with social networking, and schools are starting to look at it as an educational tool (Thelwell, 2006).
  • 14. Social Media Can Benefit Mental Health Too Emotions expressed online affect your mood. It not only helps to relieve social isolation but also open new communication pathways and offers much-needed support. It allows people to share their thoughts without revealing their identity. And it develops within people an enhanced talent of self-expression without any fear.
  • 15. Social Media Is a Way to Save Lives Lives are not only saved only by 24-hour suicide prevention hotlines. Spreading awareness and motivating people is important too. And simply assuring people that they are not alone – or the only ones with their set of problems – can be really important for some. Large numbers of websites now offer support through social platforms. Such websites are allowing people to share their experience with others and motivate them without fear of revealing their identities. What can be better than saving a life? Isn’t everything else secondary? Social media isn’t all about establishing fake identities and self-image issues. It can be a tool of great benefit for everyone who’s using it, if it is used sensibly. The possibility to instantly connect with the ones we care about has brought about many positive changes to people’s lives.
  • 16. It Can Save You in Case of an Emergency During a tornado season, the interconnectedness social media platforms offer can be of great help. If people see bad weather approaching on the horizon, they can report it instantly on Facebook or any other platform. This has already saved hundreds of people in the United States in 2011. Having the information about the approaching tornados sooner allowed people to get to safety faster and they had more time to prepare. The same can apply to any other disaster scenario, where quick communication can be the key to avoid any harm or even to survival.
  • 17. Enhanced Connectivity The line between enhancing our communication and relying on social media for it is very thin. It necessarily doesn’t have to take us out of the real world to provide us with some useful tools. In fact, it can definitely do what it was made to do. To cultivate and strengthen relationships with others, because what better option do, we have to stay updated with friends on the other side of the world? Or if we feel in a really bad mood, social media provides us with the possibility to engage with a friend, which can be a life saver sometimes.
  • 18. It Can Be Used as a Voice to Reason A lot of people are using social media to create a voice to the voiceless. These people seek to bring awareness to certain social issues. They help people with disabilities and less advantageous social backgrounds. It’s a Place for Content Discovery Social media makes it infinitely easy for you to find content that serves your interests. It also offers an opportunity to creative individuals to showcase their work or market it as a product. This makes people think outside the box and allows them to come up with content that shares valuable information. Facebook can be a great place to discover amazing educational materials regarding various topics. It can also help people discover skills that are necessary in the real world. we just have to first dig through all the useless commentary.
  • 19. Social Media Marketing Social media has created a brand new phase in marketing, because it provides interaction. Today, marketing isn’t just about broadcasting information, but engaging in a conversation with potential clients. Businesses use Facebook and Twitter to establish a reputation, a stronger online presence and to build their brand. Numerous businesses have created profiles that provide detailed information about the business to advertise in a low-cost way (Roberts, 2008). Social Networking does not just benefit individuals, but it also benefits businesses as well. These sites allow businesses to advertise and market services to a large audience, and a profile is free to set up (Gillin). Businesses will gain more attention on social networks because the business profile is available to for all users of the social network to see. Also, businesses like to use social networks to learn what potential employees are like, and make decisions based on the information provided on the person’s profile (Ellison, Steinfield, & Lampe, 2007).
  • 20. Helps in Education System Sixty percent of students on social networks have said that they talk about education, and 50 percent specifically talk about school work assignments. These students seem to have an extraordinary set of traditional and 21st century skills including communication, creativity, collaboration, and leadership skills and technology proficiency. Parents are expecting schools to take advantage of using online social networking to educate children, but to do so in a safe way. Some public schools have created a secure social network for its student to be able to communicate with other students, and to do so in a safer way (National School Board Association, 2007).
  • 21. The Toxic Reflections of Social Media (The Negative) According to Dr.Dauilla, Social media is inadvertently leaving youth susceptible to become overly self- conscious, anxious and ultimately depressed.
  • 22. An addiction It’s Incredibly Addictive we have all become addicted to our computer screens one way or another. Whether it’s a game, your favorite series or social media. Most experts have already proven that internet and computer addiction is a real thing. We just have to go out to the street and see it for our self. People are constantly hooked on their phones, seeking a distraction. By now, there might even be a Facebook addiction disorder, because it perfectly matches the criteria of an addiction.
  • 23. The Illusion of Control If we really double down on it and spend some time crafting a decent social media profile, we can really seem like we got our things together. It can actually make we believe that if we work at it, it can improve how beautiful we are. Social media are the primary channel through which fake news and other types of misinformation are spread online (Allcott and Gentzkow,2017). There are many aspects that you can’t control when it comes to how we look and that’s completely okay. But with social media, we have a choice to post a picture that make us look thinner, or at least censor the bad parts. we can then just sit back and enjoy all the approval we’re getting for our looks through likes and comments. All that sweet attention keeps flooding in, because all the insecure girls and boys need their dose. Girls can do some awesome makeups, show their curves, while guys can play the alpha male. In the past, we had to at least watch a movie or get a magazine in our hand to see thin celebrity bodies. But now, there’s an endless stream of such images if we just take our smartphone in our hand.
  • 24. A Fear of Missing Out Studies conducted in 2016 have shown that people, especially teens and young adults who spend more than two hours on social media sites, are much more likely to show psychological distress. Constantly seeing their friends and even people they don’t know having the time of their lives can be quite depressing. It makes them think that they’re missing out on so many things while others are enjoying their lives. They follow a sort of compare and despair attitude. This is partially why people feel isolated when using social media. They’re constantly comparing themselves to others as they scroll through the news feed. Judging others and themselves how they add up in the crowd is pretty unhealthy. We constantly seek to find out whether we’re better or worse than our friends, which will make us feel bad either way. Self- comparison in itself is a very destructive habit. It is also linked with other depressive mental symptoms.
  • 25. The Rise of Cyber Bullying Cyberbullying is a growing concern, due to the horrific effects it had on teens over recent years. With growing social media platforms, anyone can be subjected to trolling and bullying. Everyone had at least one friend who posted an unwanted picture of him or her . Sometimes it doesn’t stop there and people are made laughing stocks in a matter of hours. People are much more confident about throwing around insults than they are in real life. Most of us use social media in some part of our day. Statista statistics claim, “In 2016 there is 78 percent of U.S. Americans had a social media profile, representing a five percent growth compared to the previous year.” This number will increase as we rely more and more on technology.
  • 26. However, people have always been looking for ways to connect and network with each other. And, in this age of digitisation, people have found ways to be socially active on the internet, which is possible with the advent of the numerous social networking platforms and apps. Now, even relationships begin, grow and end on social media. People no longer need a personal handshake or face-to-face meeting. Social media doesn’t change anybody into an egoistic selfieholic, it only reveals them. While there may be too much personal broadcasting going on through these sites, that’s not what they are all about. They can both genuinely connect us and help us communicate more efficiently, or just feed our egos and our need for others’ approval. At the end, how we use it depends on each of the individual decisions we make.
