Al Salamo Alikom
Good afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen
Number 1, It is a areal pleasure and honor to be here
I am Alaa Mahjoub, a senior data management expert at Arab consulting engineers
I have been working in the Transportation, Oil & Gas, Utility and Defense industries, for over 3 decades. With leading contribution to the Enterprise Architecture, Enterprise Information Management and the Industrial Control System Programs in the Abu Dhabi Department of Municipal Affairs and Transport, Abu Dhabi Onshore Petroleum Operations, and Abu Dhabi Transmission & Dispatch Company
and I have been leading the transformation of the control and information systems architecture during the restructuring of the water & electricity sector in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi
I want to tell you something: Last week while I was exploring the press releases, I sow a press release issued by Gartner and it says:
“By 2020, 60% of Digital Businesses Will Suffer Major Service Failures Due to the Inability of IT Security Teams to Manage Digital Risk”
The good news is that using the Enterprise Architecture as a framework provides us with a modeler and consistent methods for implementing our digital business and hence we can have better control on that risk.
And in fact, the subject of this presentation will also help us to address this goal
The intention of my presentation today is to explain how can we use the Enterprise Architecture as a method to plan and implement the transportation digital business
I’ll also highlight the importance of the Internet of Things as a core building block for transforming the digital business of transportation agencies
I will also go through the other technology building blocks, a transportation agency needs to support its digital business
and finally I will give guidelines and recommendations about the implementation aspects and the transformation roadmap
what is digital business?
Well,
Before we begin, digital business is not just an information technology solution, it is not just an intelligent transportation system and it is not just an operational technology solution.
Digital business is the creation of new business designs by blurring the digital and physical worlds due to the convergence of people, business and things
By connecting people, places, things and information to the internet, new business opportunities are created, and business model can be rethink, reinvented, reimagined and transformed.
And why we can do that?
Because the new technologies of social-media, mobility, cloud-computing, big data and Internet of Things are enabling us to do that.
In the digital business we have the internet of people. people are providing and consuming information. Social media information, calendar information, location information and online transactions
In the digital business, we have the internet of places. We have connected homes, connected offices and connected buildings.
Information about places is there. Number of people in the place. Number of people visited the place. Waite times and reservation services.
In the digital business we have the internet of things. We have the connected vehicles, connected busses, connected taxis, and connected traffic signals. Things are providing and consuming information. Location information, speed information and traffic information.
In the digital business we have the internet of information. We have bus schedules, expected disruptions and etcetera and so forth.
The tremendous amount of information produced by the many people, The many businesses and the many things connected to the internet should be utilized` to create new-revenue, better customer-experience, and better business-processes.
In this example, people made 1.35 billion journeys on London's tube network last year.
Every weekday, London sees 2 million people travelling-in on the tube... and 2 million traveling back.
This Tube-Heartbeat-application is used to map London’s busy Underground system.
And so, People can find-out when their local station is busiest.
And people can find-out whether they travel indeed is busier than it used to be.
Two important questions arise here.
You would going to say, well, but how can we coordinate the analysis, design, planning, and implementation activities of the digital business transformation
The answer is, the Enterprise Architecture practice is the method to do that.
Enterprise architecture is the process of translating business vision and strategy into effective enterprise change by creating, communicating and improving the key requirements, principles and models that describe the enterprise's future state and enable its evolution.
You may going to say, wait a minute Alaa, from where should we start? we have in this diagram the business architecture, the information architecture, the application architecture and the technology architecture. So from where should we start? From which layer of the Enterprise Architecture should we start? ?
In fact, we should Start from the business architecture
Business architecture models such as Strategy Maps, Business Capability Models and Business Process Models are used to model the business architecture and this is a good starting point.
A ‘business capability’ model is a representation of an organization’s business, independent of the organization’s structure, processes, people or domains.
It is designed to enable an organization to express and explore ‘what it does’, and so it can make decisions about ‘how to do it’.
The example we see here is a high-level business capability model of a traditional governmental transportation agency.
In this example, there are 8 main traditional business capabilities: Regulation, Business-Administration, Demand-Management, Project-Delivery, Asset-Management, Operation-Management, Maintenance-Management and Market and Customer Management.
However, delivering digital business requires new capabilities to develop new digital services.
Theses capabilities include: Customer and partner analysis, New business model creation, Ecosystem management, Contextual Information-Management and digital-services design and implementation.
The new digital business services I mentioned at the end of the previous slide differ from the traditional e-business and digital marketing because of the specific integration of "things “
And that is why a new technology platform (The Internet of Things Platform) should be integrated in the information and technology layers of the Enterprise Architecture to support these new digital business services
The IoT Platform is a hybrid technology platform that combines multiple capabilities that span traditional Information Technology and Operational Technology environments
In addition to the IoT platform, there are other information and technology capabilities a transportation agency needs to support its digital business
In fact, there are 5 information and technology capabilities that transportation agency needs for this purpose
These capabilities are: Information Systems Platform, the Customer Experience Platform, the IoT Platform, the Ecosystems Platform and the Data & Analytics Platform
The information system platform connects the transportation agency employees and it runs the agency’s core business applications, back office applications, collaboration applications, endpoint-device applications and operational technology applications
The Customer Experience Platform connects the transportation agency customers
it run the technology that enables interaction and commerce with customers and citizens, Examples of the customer experience platform applications are customer portals, Business-to-Comers (B2C) and Business-to-Business (B2B) applications.
The IoT platform connects physical assets (or things) such as Traffic Signals , Taxis and Busses for monitoring and control, as well as optimization and monetization.
The physical assets connected to this platform may be owned by the transportation agency, or owned by its customers or owned by its partners. The Capabilities of this platform include connectivity, analytics and integration to the enterprise core and operational technology systems
The Ecosystems Platform supports the creation of, and connection to, external ecosystems, marketplaces and related communities such as government agencies, smart cities, credit card networks, police, ambulance, and so on.
The data and Analytics platform is-in-the central position of all the other platforms
it Contains the Data Management and Analytics tools and applications.
In the following slides we are going to have a closer look at the IoT and the DM and Analytics Platforms.
The Internet of Things platform communicates with the Things through Gateways and agents
The gateways and agents host the application logic, and communicate with the physical things connected to it.
Device management is responsible for provisioning and connecting to devices using various communication protocols
It also secures IoT communications, data, and the things,
It also installs and upgrades the IoT software.
The IoT platforms provides integration middleware such as message-oriented middleware, API, and ESB.
This middleware typically offer integration capabilities, such as publishing and consuming APIs; protocol support, as well as some-form of data translation
The Business Intelligence and Analytics capability provides data monitoring & analytics function
It can also act as an Extract, Transform and Load tool for the Data & Analytics Platform.
IoT Platform often includes data storage capability (such as the Apache Hadoop or database )
This data storage capability is used to store and search the data acquired from the connected IoT devices
The orchestration capability coordinates the interactions of people, systems and things to produce the desired business outcomes.
Data and analytics platform — Contains information management and analytical capabilities
It integrates the data delivered from all other platforms
It also provides the context for reporting; real-time event analysis and adjustments to processes; data and models and hence can deliver business insight and supports decision making
You would going to say, wait a minute Alaa, tell me how I am going to use all these platforms to suport the digital business transformation in my agency?
In fact, there are many applications that can be supported by the transportation digital business platforms.
One of the many applications that can be supported by the transportation digital business platform is the connected Metrorail
The first step to implement the connected Metrorail is to build the metro network itself
The second step is to install the Internet of things endpoints such as the entry and exit turnstiles in the metro stations
The third step is to install the transportation digital business platform
The fourth step is to connect the IoT endpoints to the platform
The fifth step is to connect the customers to the customer experience platform
And the last step is to connect the Metro network to the ecosystems
Ecosystems may be things such as other transportation-mode networks OR traffic monitoring and control centres,
Having done that we can now get the benefits of the connected Metrorail
The Metrorail transportation can now be better coordinated with the other modes of transportation services in the Multi-modal Transportation Network
And this coordination can take place in a local, national or international levels of multimodal transportation networks
The Metro transportation service is now also being ready to form an integrated part of a larger transportation system such as a door-to-door travels-as-a-service system
Recommendations:
The transportation digital Business leaders should:
Understand their organization’s strategy, find early adopters, focus on business outcomes and create a success story
Business & IT Executives should also understand that the skill set of the past will not be the skill set of the future
so, they should focus on constant learning in order to uplift the capabilities of their staff across the IT and the business units and build their Talent Pipeline
Adoption of best practices and standards such as XML protocols for the exchange of real time information of public transport services and vehicles (e.g. EU SIRI) are also important Service Interface for Real Time Information
Last, but not least, focus in the SECURITY considerations of your digital business architecture
The recommendations for the Roadmap is
To Start with Establishing the Digital Business Capabilities
Modernize IS, CX, and Data and Analytics Platforms and Improve you Services
Meanwhile Prototype IoT & Ecosystems Platform and implement your full digital business platform to support innovation and transformation
