2. The Republic of Mauritius, is an island nation in the Indian Ocean about 2000 kilometers of the
southeast coast of the African continent.
The country includes the island of Mauritius, Rodrigues (560 kilometers east), the islands of
Agalega, and the archipelago of Saint Brandon. The islands of Mauritius, Rodrigues, and Reunion
(170 km southwest), form part of the Mascarene Islands. The area of the country is 2040 km2. The
capital and the largest city is Port Louis.

6. Sugar cane makes up 90% of the crop, accounting for 25% of exports. A historic drought
severely damaged the crop of 1999.
Mauritius has attracted some 9000 offshore companies, most of which are trading in India
and South Africa. In the banking sector have invested more than a billion dollars. The
issuance of stamps collection is also a source of income.
Currently another source of income is tourism.
