Born and raised on the dangerous and violent streets of Compton, California,
Grammy award-winning rapper/songwriter Kendrick Lamar began his travel on the road
to fame after signing with the Carson, California-based independent record label Top
Dawg Entertainment. His first major appeal came with the release of his mixtape Overly
dedicated in 2010. In 2011, his first independent album, Section .80 received critical
acclaim. After TDE signed a joint-venture deal with Aftermath and Interscope Records in
2012, Lamar released his debut studio album good kid, mA.A.d city, which received
worldwide acclaim and 7 Grammy nods in 2014. Two Grammy’s later, Lamar released
his highly anticipated sophomore album To Pimp A Butterfly, which released digitally on
ITunes on March 16, 2015. Here’s Kendrick Lamar with a black power anthem off of
Section .80, HiiPower.
In this track, Kendrick gives the listener a bit of a background into Black history,
as well as his original outlook on today’s black society.
Next up is the down to earth Poe Mans Dreams, off of Section .80.
The most important aspect of this song is the authenticity: How Kendrick strips
the track of technicality, and tells the listener about his family life, his personality, and his
dreams.

In his hit single Swimming Pools [off of good kid, mA.A.d. city], Lamar gives the
listener his unique perspective on the usage of liquor. In this song, Kendrick talks about
liquor effecting 3 different peoples: Family, friends, and himself.
Next is the heartfelt Sing About Me, I’m Dying Of Thirst from Lamar’s debut
album good kid, m.A.A.d. city. In this song, Kendrick talks in the voice of a deceased
friend, the sister of a deceased friend, and then brings the song back to his sentiments.
Through this song, the listeners get a deeper look into Lamar’s emotional and mental
struggles through his genuinely introspective lyrics.
In the good kid, m.A.A.d. city closer Compton, Lamar and Dr. Dre paint a vivid
picture of their hometown. Lamar and Dr. Dre stay true to Compton’s grit, but give the
song a more radio comfortable vibe.
In the lead single for To Pimp A Butterfly, Kendrick Lamar blatantly tells the
listeners he loves himself, and there’s no reason they shouldn’t love themselves. This song
is a breath of fresh air from typical Hip-Hop, with a very uplifting message that
transcends genres.
Lastly is the smooth, uplifting song Complexion off of Lamar’s latest album To
Pimp A Butterfly. In the song, Kendrick discusses the importance of equality, regardless
of anyone’s complexion. He also touches on female empowerment.
