Talk at Urban Data Talks event #3. Fab Labs Barcelona's journey from Smart Cities to Smart Citizens. Tools and methodologies to empower smarter citizens
2. About Us
Let’s talk about a Fab Lab
Fab Lab Barcelona is a digital fabrication and innovation
laboratory. It inspires a worldwide network of change-makers
to act for social innovation; empowered by digital tools, open
knowledge and leading research.
- 2
The emergence of new industry, technological shifts and a
change in the perception of our environment has led to a
global discussion about the meaning of our cultural
consumption. Distributed Design utilises global connectivity to
move data, instead of products - this situates itself between
the Maker Movement and the digitisation of the design
discipline

4. Strategic Areas
Fab Lab Barcelona is one of the
research departments of IAAC.
Within the lab, there are seven
research areas that synthesize
our work, and help to
understand how we relate
technology with society and the
environment. These research
areas develop work related to
educational programs, research
and innovation projects, and
collaboration with companies
and organizations.

Enabling and designing platforms
for collective sensemaking
We'll be testing tools and methodologies for making
sense of data in pilots in Amsterdam, Barcelona &

45. FAB KIDS LAB
Exploring analogue and digital
sensing, to better build bird
feeders
The Making Sense Barcelona team collaborated with a group
of 15 students aged 9-10 years old to explore the potential of
both analogue and digital sensing to provide a clearer picture
of how pollution can affect local bird species.

The Barcelona pilot trains a committed group of
environmental activists in the tools and methodologies
needed to conduct participatory sensing campaigns.
The first pilot will map and address the issue

47. PLAÇA DEL SOL
The Neighbourhood Versus The Noise.
The Plaça del Sol in Barcelona is a town square that has historically
suffered from the noise of drinking into the early hours of the morning by
crowds drawn from near and far. Working with the Making Sense team in
Barcelona, the neighbourhood association of the Plaça del Sol has been
researching and measuring how high in relation to the norm are noise
levels around the plaça, and what can be to improve the situation.

iSCAPE (Improving the Smart Control of Air
Pollution in Europe) was a European research and
innovation project active from September 2016 to
December 2019. The project worked on integrating
and advancing the control of air quality and carbon
emissions in European cities in the context of climate
change through the development of sustainable and
passive air pollution remediation strategies, policy
interventions and behavioural change initiatives.
88. Urban pollution problem
In 2008, it was issued the Top Ten list of the world’s most
dangerous pollution problems, affecting significant impact
on human health worldwide and result in death, persistent
illness, and neurological impairment for millions of people,
particularly children.
According to the report, many of these deaths and related
illnesses could be avoided with affordable and effective
interventions.

89. Urban pollution problem
Special focus on vehicular traffic
1. Efforts on vehicle emissions have been significant in large
sized PMs
2. Until the Eu6c, Eu6d-temp introduction and the VW
scandal, OEM’s efforts were focused on homologation
procedures only
3. The real vehicle emissions were higher at road than at
laboratory, specially for Diesel vehicles
4. Engine technology shifts NOx-PM trade-off towards NOx
and lower PM size, more harmful to humans
Although legislation on pollutants emissions are more
stringent, values’ trends are not always decreasing

91. Main pollutants and sources
Primary pollutants
Emitted by land sources into the atmosphere
[Particulate Matter] from fossil fuel combustion (coal and diesel)
[NOx] from high temperature combustion
[CO2 / H2O / CO / HCs ] from fossil fuel combustion and industry
[SOx] from sulphur containing fuels and coals combustion
[NH3] from agriculture and SCR systems
Sense Making From Smart Cities to Smart Citizens
92. Main pollutants and sources
Secondary pollutants
Formed within the atmosphere after primary pollutants reaction
[Tropospheric Ozone] from CO and NO2 reaction under sunlight
[Sulphuric Acid] from SOx and NO2 creating acid rain
[SMOG] from SOx and vehicular smoke

● Gas sensors: CO, NO2, NO, O3, SO2, H2S.
These are normally in configurations of 2, 4, or 6
sensors (normally O3 needs NO2 to compensate
for cross-sensitivity)
● CO2 NDIR Sensor with a sensirion SCD30
● PM sensors from Plantower or others similar
optical particle counters (OPC)
● Temperature probe: external temperature probe
for more reliable air temperature sensing
● Ultraviolet radiation
● Noise levels and FFT spectrum from the Smart
Citizen Kit
● Environmental metrics: temperature, humidity,
ambient pressure from the Smart Citizen Kit
