Notes de l'éditeur
-I have worked as a bartender during my 3 years of university working 15+ hours every week
-This has meant I have to organise my work efficiently in order to meet deadlines while working long hours, this have mainly required keeping a dairy with dates of work due and starting the work as soon as it is handed out, these organisational skills have greatly improved over my 3 years at uni and I now feel confident in my organisational skills
-As front of house we must make sure we are keeping with the health and safety standards set for us. This includes personal hygiene due to handling of glasses and plates that are being used by customers. As well as cleaning beer lines safely, effectively and efficiency as we have a duty to keep customers safe.
-As a bartender my role is to severe customers drinks, take food orders, deliver food to the tables as well as general cleaning. This requires good multi tasking skills especially over weekends when it is busy meaning we have to prioritise the tasks in order to get things done on time while keeping customers happy
-As it is a pub within the city centre we deal with a range of customers daily. This can include large rowdy groups which we must keep under control in order to not ruin other customers experience
-Football
-We regularly have a group of deaf customers in which we must support customers to ensure they are understood by adapting our serving styles (how??)
-During my time as a bartender I Never called in sick, and had a perfect attendance record which I believe is a good trait which will beneficial in future job roles
-During this role I actively demonstrated many skills in which my future career would require
-During my summer between 2nd and 3rd year I took on the role of a events team member along side my bartending job
-As a events team member my role was to travel around the UK taking part in sizing events for a school uniform company.
-As the company is based in Nottingham and schools all over the country use there products my role was to travel with a group to schools and host events where we helped the children find their size and assisted them and there parents in ordering protucts
-Although this sounds simple it involved helping multiple children and there parents with different items and sizes, the event was usually after school for a few hours and we were sometime seeing 300 children within a short period of time.
-This role helped me with team work greatly as some events different items were popular or staff were new, therefore we had to monitor the situation and jump on to different stations helping and assisting the other staff
-There was many times I had to handle difficult situations or customers. For example many parents would try to put their children in jumpers 3 sizes to big for them due to wanting to save money and there kids would be upset not wanting to be embarrassed in very baggy clothes. I had to nicely try and come up with a compromise so that the child would be comfortable and the customer would leave happy.
-During these events I was regularly assigned as the driver, which involved driving the team to and from the event which were sometimes 4/5 hour trips to places I had never visted before, this meant I was under pressure with a lot of trust being put in me. What I gained from this?...
-Before moving to Sheffield to undertake my degree I worked in sainsburys as a customer service assistant, where I worked individually managing the customer service desk
-The customer service desk was challenging as it is mostly Complaints and people are regularly unhappy therefore I often faced diffuclt situations and customers in which I had to appropriately handle
-To assess how staff handled different situations the company had a regular secret shopper tasks which happen monthly, the secret shopper once assessed my performance in which I scored full marked
-Due to the area in which the store was located we had many elderly customers along with customers with physical disabilities. Often I helped the customers to get there shopping done, showing the level of support they required, whether this be just pushing there trolley while they shop or using there shopping list to do there shopping for them. This required me to assess the situation and communicate with the customer to allow me to help in the way they required me to
-I often took on supervisor position in which I had to manage all tills, helping them with product problems, customer problems or verifying age of customers when buying restricted items. From this I gained management skills as well as the ability to work individually under pressure.
During this role I was asked to do my supervisor training after a few months of working there but as I was starting University in September I didn’t have enough time
I am currently volunteering at Sheffield mencap and gateway, which is centre that provides support for over 300 adults and children with learning disabilities.
My night for volunteering is during adult social night. Some nights I may be serving the adults on the snack bar which involves communicating with the adults and generally helping them enjoy themselves. Some nights I may help in the art room just being there as a friend for the adults and other nights I may just walk around socialising with everyone.
This role pushes me out of my comfort zone and allows me to gain a greater understanding of how to communicate with adults depending on there level of learning disabilities, as some may require much more assistance than others.
During this role I face difficult situations in which I have never handled before. For example a adult has tried to pull and grab me not understanding there own strength, here I handled the situation best I could by being calm and explaining that I didn’t like them grabbing me like that; I then spoke to a more experienced volunteer about possible ways to handle this. Situations like this give me experience and allow to me gain understanding of how to best support the adults.
-After finishing my biomedical science degree I would firstly like to gain some NHS lab experience before applying for the scientific training programme (STP) next year.
-The STP is a three year training programme which includes work-based and academic learning while being on a band 6 wage.
-specialism
-This role offers the chance to complete your HCPC academic portfolio meaning would leave the course with eligibility for registration with the HCPC
-The STP is extremely competitive therefore to have a chance of getting a place on the programme I must have and be able to demonstrate many of the skills required
Q: Why do I want to do course?
-The Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) is the statutory regulator for several health and care professions, including biomedical scientists.
The aim of the HCPC is to protect patient safety by keeping a register of health and care professionals who meet HCPC standards.
-Specialism = Haematology and Transfusion Science
-Other than many of the laboratory based skills which I have gained during my degree there is many personal skills which the programme values which can be demonstrated in study, work or non-work contexts.
-These include:
~Good active listening skills
~Be self aware and flexible enough to adopt a range of evaluative or empathising listening and communicative styles according to the needs of the listener and the situation in which you face
~An important skills is the ability to work independently in the execution of work given by the departmental supervisors
~Good personal organisational skills are required to ensure work is done on time and correctly
~Within a lab based environment being a good team worker is essential
~You must also be able to support patients with a range of conditions in a variety of healthcare settings.
~Many labs work towards targets which must be completed in a certain time frame therefore a key skill is to be ablw to work under pressure.
~The NHS cannot afford for a member of staff to be unreliable as they have a very important role therefore good attendance record is a must
-I believe many of these skills described I have gained and demonstrated during my work experience, although I dp believe these can be improved. I would like to gain more experience working with children with and without disabilities as within health care many patients are children and this will help me further be suited for my potential future role.
