Unit 62 – Proposal
I have been asked to tender a proposal by the college to produce a promotional video for a
department within the college (extended creative media diploma) which can then be used on the
college website, be produced as a DVD to send to potential students and also be uploaded to the
college YouTube site and Facebook site. As part of this assignment I will have to negotiate a brief
with my client and have records of communication and correspondence between myself and the
client. While negotiating the brief I will decide on the style, length and content of the video
depending on my client’s requirements.

Advertising

Advertising can be done in many ways such as newspapers, magazines, word of mouth etc.

Some of the best ways to advertise this college course would be to advertise on the TV or radio in
the local area to the college, doing this in the local area would be well aimed at potential students
although this method would be quite pricey.

Another easy and cheap and quite effective way of advertising is creating a YouTube video that
shows off all the good things of the course and students opinions of how great the course is, this
way the people who hear about the course and are interested are able to see videos of the course
and what people think about it.

Viral marketing

Viral marketing is a marketing strategy that focuses on spreading information and opinions about a
product or service from person to person.

The most common ways that this is done is by using e-mails or online social network sites to
publicise the product/service.

This would be a good and pretty easy way to advertise creative media as lots of potential students
would be using social network sites like Facebook and Twitter by having pages dedicated to that
certain part of the college or have it advertised on the side bars. Another way is if people use word
of mouth and it spreads so a lot of people hear about the course.

Platforms

WWW

There are lots of different ways to advertise things on the World Wide Web and there are a lot of
people that see it, the most common advertisements on the www are popups advertisement bars
that appear at the side of webpages and before videos are played on things such as YouTube.
I think the best way to advertise the creative media course is by making a video on YouTube about
students telling a camera all the good things about the course and why people should take it, this
video could also be used on the college website and other relevant things.

DVD

A DVD could also be produced with a similar video to that of the YouTube one previously mentioned
but on a larger scale with more students talking about the course with things such as what they do
and how they feel about it. This DVD could then be given out at secondary schools or things like that
to attract students that would be going to college to join this course.

Presentation

A presentation is also a good way to advertise creative media as if it is done in things like secondary
schools it gives the students a chance to ask about the course and see what it is like in person.

A good way to this this would be to send a few teachers and students with a PowerPoint
presentation to different high schools and talk to the students that might be interested in going to
college.

Technology

Compression

Compression can be lossy and lossless.

Lossy compression is a way of compressing that loses a little bit of data each time it’s compressed; it
is used mainly for storing images, audio and video. When videos are compressed this way there is
little visible quality loss.

Lossless compression is a way of compressing that doesn’t lose any data; this method is usually used
to save images rather than anything else.

Digital file formats

Windows Media, RealMedia, QuickTime, mpeg, adobe flash

Streaming methods

There are two ways to watch media things on the internet; these are downloading and streaming.

Downloading is when the entire file is saved to your computer which can then be opened and
viewed this has its good points like how different parts of the file can be accessed quickly but also
bad points such as having to wait for the whole file to download before being able to view it.

Streaming is where a person can start watching a video as soon as it starts being downloaded and it
gets “streamed” to the person as they watch it; this means no waiting is involved to view the video.

Data transfer rate
Data transfer rate is used to measure how fast data is transferred from one location to another. Data
transfer rates are measured in bits per second (bps) and not bytes per second, there are 8 bits in a
byte, this means that a data transfer rate of 80Mbps is only transferring 10MB per second.

File size

File size is the size of a computer file; the files are usually measured in bytes.
