MELBOURNE: A Singapore student accused of committing acts of indecency on a fellow cadet
at the Australian Defence Force Academy earlier this year has been committed for trial in the
ACT Supreme Court in Canberra.
Benedict Ang Yong Chuean, 21, maintained his pleas of not guilty in the ACT Magistrates Court
on Thursday, the Canberra Times reports.
He is facing two allegations of committing acts of indecency on the victim without her consent.
Ang entered an officer cadet’s room at the military school on May 6 and committed the acts on
her, including touching her breast.
Ang is a member of the Singapore Armed Forces.
His lawyer, John Harris, SC, said his client was currently studying at the University of NSW in
Sydney.
Ang declined to call any evidence at the brief committal proceeding, as is his right, the
newspaper said.
Chief Magistrate Lorraine Walker said she was satisfied, based on a document summarising the
case against Ang, there was enough evidence to justify putting the allegations before a jury.
Ang will have his first day in the higher court later this month.

been brought before Canberra courts on unrelated matters since April 2011. Ang, a
Singaporean national and member of his nation’s defence force, has moved off campus to stay
in Canberra with a senior officer.
