Presentation given at Cilip ARLG/MmIT day conference on "Research(er) Workflows in the Real World" on 9 Dec 2019 at the British Library Conference Centre. Conference summary at: https://mmitblog.wordpress.com/2020/01/20/researcher-workflows-in-the-real-world-a-guest-review-from-our-bursary-winner/
5. Hypothetical workflow superimposed on tool combinations, derived from 2015-2016 survey and
FORCE11 Scholarly Commons working group discussions (September 2016):
10. RMS software - more than just
reference management
PDF annotation
Shared libraries
Manuscript preparation / submission
Integration with other research tools and
methods
• Data
• NVivo
• Systematic reviews
13. Reference management on the go
• Web and/or desktop interface
• Browser extensions
• RMS on mobile devices
• Licensing:
• Individual or site subscription
• Open source / freemium
15. Advising on RM software
• Where will you be searching for information?
• Where will you do your reflection and writing?
• Do you need a cloud-based “library”?
• Will your searching and writing be carried out
on a personal desktop PC / Mac or laptop or
on shared / institutional equipment?
• Is there a supported RM tool?
• What do colleagues use?
16. Word processor integration
• Site licenses for Word enable RM integration in
Toolbar
• Personal devices will require a plug-in or cite (while
or as) you write option
• Default Referencing tool in Word can subsequently
be imported into most RM software
• LaTeX incorporates a basic bibliography tool, but
there are more flexible and powerful options
• GoogleDocs – built in citation tool plus several RM
tools
See:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_reference_management_
software#Word_processor_integration
17. Manuscript and pre-submission
preparation
Improving academic writing: Writefull
Copyright assignment
• Check employer and funder requirements
Don’t forget the data!
• Deposit in a repository and include DOI
Locate ORCiD identifier and any system logins
18. Journal selection (1)
• Going beyond thinkchecksubmit.org
• Advice from senior colleagues
• Advice from the library and/or research office
eg https://www.lboro.ac.uk/research/support/publishing/
•Open access and data policies
19. Journal selection (2)
Other considerations
• Pre-print policy
• Turnaround time for manuscripts
• Continuous publication
• Publication Ethics
• Discoverability:
• A&I and citation services, Ulrichs

Manuscript preparation / submission – collaborative writing with built-in reference management facilities
All reference management software includes tools to organize your articles into folders within your larger library, a means to identify and remove duplicate articles in your library, attach full text of articles (usually PDFs) to your library, highlight and annotate those articles, add PDFs from your computer to your library.

Most major RM tools can be used for systematic reviews
Specialist import filters
Take care with deduplication
Take care with shared libraries
Rayyan (web / mobile application to assist systematic review authors) recommends editing references in RM software first
Some RM tools are can be purchased on an individual or site subscription and others are open source / freemium software
Adding references when they are mentioned at an event (if you locate the PDF you can import it)
Useful for reading and/or annotating PDFs and editing your Library
Not designed to support writing although you can usually email and copy citations
Library, lab, home, fieldwork?
Where there is a site license to a product, IT support can turn on the options in Word so that these products are available in the Toolbar.
Paperpile – “is a full-featured reference manager right in your Google Doc”
Writefull helps researchers improve their written English by suggesting improvements to academic language usage, such as sentence structures in scientific writing, discipline-specific vocabulary, and appropriate word choice.
