What is Service Learning?
Service learning is experiential education wherein a student gains real-world understanding and
useful skills while helping their community.
What Activities Count?
Activities completed for a nonprofit
organization
Service activities as part of membership in
other clubs
Volunteer activities with youth sports
organizations
Religious mission trips, activities or classes
Approved activitiescompleted for New
Century Scholars
What Activities Do NOT Count?*
Any activities performed for family
members
Babysitting
Regular club activities
Yard work
Sleep hours on overnight activities
Performances (i.e., theatre productions,
concerts, etc.)
Helpful Tip:
Service learning can make a difference in your community, make your college applications more
competitive and make you eligible for scholarships, such as the ROPE Award and the Jim
Songster Mastery Award.
