critical environments.
Summary
Altibase enabled Kyobo Securities to provide consistent and extreme
speed, enabling its clients to trade without interruption and with absolute
confidence.
In-Memory Database Solution
4. + Problems
Kyobo was crippled by a systems crash resulting in grave financial
losses. Kyobo’s legacy system was undependable with regard to
speed, stability and reliability.
Kyobo’s retail trading system was unsteady, lacked constant availability and
had inadequate fault-tolerance.
Kyobo was plagued with an inability to search and update operations data.
The information could not be effectively organized nor stored leading to
waste and unneeded redundancy.
Kyobo’s fixed income asset management arm required real-time qualitative
and quantitative information but fell short of it.
The legacy system’s total cost of ownership (TCO) of operating and
maintaining the system stood in direct contrast to its effectiveness. The
system did not meet needs, suffered from sub-par technical support yet
drained budgets.
In-Memory Database Solution
5. + Solution
Kyobo Securities integrated ALTIBASE HDB in-memory DBMS
into its expanded server base and respective profit centers in
2007. Kyobo converted its information service system from
Oracle to ALTIBASE HDB for higher performance, real-time
support and superior reliability. In 2009 and 2012, it further
propagated ALTIBASE HDB into its new financial product trading
system.
In-Memory Database Solution
6. + Results
ALTIBASE HDB supports Kyobo’s retail trading arm, providing mission-
critical fault-tolerance throughout.
Kyobo’s TCO is much lower with ALTIBAS E HDB, easing budgetary
pressures while adding unsurpassed technical support.
Kyobo Securities provides consistent and extreme speed, enabling its
depth of clients to trade simultaneously and with confidence.
Kyobo has real-time access to secure data, equipping it with the ability
for profitable and dynamic decision-making.
Kyobo Securities is no longer concerned with system instability and
losses attributed to systems limitations and unreliability.

8. + Performance
In 2009, Kyobo Securities needed to construct a high-performance system to
be accessed by retail financial outlets for trading new financial products. The
company decided to implement an in-memory DBMS (IMDB) in order to
achieve optimal performance and the speed.
At that time, they considered two options for implementing the IMDB: Oracle
TimesTen, a memory-only database, and ALTIBASE HDB, a hybrid database
that can run in memory-only, disk-only, and hybrid modes. Equipped with a
flexible hybrid architecture for both in-memory and on-storage options,
industry standard database features, data types, large reference installations
and outstanding technical support, Altibase was an easy choice.
In 2009, Kyobo Securities implemented their new financial product trading
system using ALTIBASE HDB Version 4 in in-memory DBMS mode, and their
business is thriving on that base to date.

9. + Performance
In 2011, with ALTIBASE HDB’s comprehensive benefits to their financial
product trading system, Kyobo Securities decided to deepen their relationship
with Altibase by implementing their new securities trading system using
ALTIBASE HDB on an IBM AIX platform.
The company’s application developers implemented the new trading system
based on ALTIBASE HDB Version 5. As illustrated in the architectural diagram
below, the system accesses Korea Exchange Servers in order to obtain real-
time securities price information, and supports client connections using a
custom gateway application. ALTIBASE HDB was deployed across 6 server
nodes, and the custom gateway application provided the load balancing
functionality for an average of 120 simultaneous client sessions.
While delivering extreme speed, ALTIBASE HDB utilized only 50% of CPU,
resulting in significantly lower resource consumption. Kyobo also observed
that ALTIBASE HDB is not only very fast, but it is also extremely stable and
reliable.

10. + Application Development
ALTIBASE HDB as a full-featured and standards-compliant DBMS also made it
easy for Kyobo Securities’ IT team. The company’s application developers
implemented the custom gateway application using ALTIBASE HDB’s familiar C
Programming Language Interface without having to learn new interfaces or
programming languages.
