3. Crawler Dozer
Problem:
A major global construction equipment manufacturer needed a
coupling solution for its largest bulldozer. The massive 24-ton,
214 HP machine features a 135 in. wide blade and can be used
for heavy dozing as well as fine grading. The coupling connects
the main diesel engine to the hydraulic pump that powers the
propulsion tracks and all the hydraulic cylinders that provide
blade lift, angle and tilt functionality.
Solution:
To meet the challenging application requirements, Stromag
supplied Periflex®
VN (PVN) disc couplings, which eliminated
the torsional vibrations associated with a broad engine speed
range. The PVN 350 plug-in units supplied feature a maximum
torque of 3,000 Nm (2,212 lb.ft.).
• Highly flexible elastomer disc couplings with linear spring
characteristics

4. Excavation Front Loaders
Problem:
A major off-highway OEM required reliable actuators for use on
a line of excavation front loaders. The actuators remove/
re-position large locking pins during routine bucket changes.
The actuators needed to be remotely operated from inside the
cab to facilitate safe, fast bucket replacement while reducing
vehicle downtime.
Solution:
Warner Linear Programmable S-Track actuators were selected
to meet the requirements of this rugged-duty application. Units
feature an easy-to-use, integrated keypad which allows
operators to set and reset end of travel positions as well as two
intermediate stops.
• Integral MP150 Metri-Pack 8-pin molded connector
• 400 lb. max. dynamic and static load rating
• State-of-the-art microprocessor-based digital electronic controls

5. Excavator Tensioner Pulley
Problem:
A global manufacturer of excavating equipment was having
problems during installation of tensioner pulley bearings
which were being damaged because the current design
made it difficult to properly fixture the bearing to avoid a
bearing’s biggest nightmare – brinelling. To make matters
worse, the customer also had to assemble some spacers
and a stud in order to install the bearing into the system.
Solution:
After carefully reviewing the application, Kilian engineers
created a custom unitized bearing design that eliminated the
need to buy and assemble several other components.
• Eliminated scrap due to brinelling
• Reduced assembly costs

6. Aerial Work Platforms and
Stock Pickers
Problem:
A rugged braking system was required to provide parking
and emergency braking for a new line of electrically-powered
boom lift trucks and aerial work platforms used in
construction, airports, malls, and factories.
Solution:
Matrix International re-designed its dual-function, spring-
applied, electrically-released, multi-plate 1EB40-13 brake as
a new model.
• Brake designed to fit between the electric drive motor and a
planetary reducer that functions as the drive wheel.
• Units incorporate friction plates made from an alternative
material that provides a higher co-efficient of friction
• Unique SAE mount

7. Aerial Boom Lifts
Problem:
Bonfiglioli, a leading global designer and manufacturer of
industrial drive systems, needed an IP67-rated brake solution
for a multi-purpose IP67 integrated drive used on aerial platforms
and other applications. The brakes are mounted to the back of the
AC drive motor on each of the lift’s four wheel drive assemblies.
The brakes provide parking and emergency stopping functionality
in challenging outdoor conditions.
Solution:
Bonfiglioli chose to partner with Warner Electric based on superior
technical performance provided on previous projects. To meet the
application requirements, Warner Electric supplied special
enclosed PK60 (Pan-Cake) spring-applied, electrically released
motor brakes with a static torque rating of 165 Nm (122.1 lb.ft.).
The fully enclosed, IP67-rated brakes feature a specially
developed surface treatment that withstood the ISO 9227:2017
salt spray test for a full 500-hours with no visible corrosion.

8. Aerial Boom Lifts
Problem:
Ashwoods, a leading European electric motor manufacturer,
needed a custom brake solution for use on a new line of aerial
lifts. A motor/brake assembly was designed to combine with a
gearbox and sold as a complete wheel drive package to an
aerial platform lift OEM. The challenge was that Ashwoods’
motors rotate at up to 8,000 RPM, much faster than competitor
units. A robust brake friction material was needed to handle the
high-speed motors.
Solution:
After discussing the application requirements with several brake
manufacturers, Ashwoods partnered with Warner Electric.
While the other brake OEMs could not offer a solution, Warner
Electric engineers took on the challenge and designed a standard
compact, PK (Pan-Cake) Series electrically-released brake that
incorporated a custom high-coefficient friction material. The PK 35
units supplied featured a static torque rating of 75 Nm (55.3 lb.ft.).

Modified Model PK35 Brake
9. Boom Lifts
Problem:
A major scissor and boom lift OEM was experiencing hydraulic
pump failures on their articulated boom lifts in the field. It was
determined that the failures were the result of engine
vibration transmitted to the pump through an aluminum pump
mount engine housing that mates the engine to the pump.
The pump manufacturer would not warranty their pumps due
to the damaging vibration.
Solution:
The Guardian engineering team worked with the customer’s
engineers and tested three Class 30 gray iron housing
solutions, each with different thicknesses, lengths, and
weights. Ultimately, one of the housings provided a vibration
dampening level that met the pump manufacturer’s warranty
requirements.
• Guardian also supplied a Guardex FBA drive coupling which
mounts directly to the engine flywheel.

10. Skid Steer
Problem:
A major construction and agriculture equipment manufacturer
was receiving excessive field service calls for the company’s
skid steers due to the continued failure of the bushing system
in a foot pedal used to help maneuver the equipment.
Solution:
Kilian Manufacturing’s engineers developed a custom, single
precision bearing assembly that minimized play and
eliminated O-rings that had worn down in original system.
• Single assembly replaced eight parts
• Reduced warranty repairs
• Reduced inventory
• Reduced costs
