15. BYOL: Dedicated Hosts
Bring on-premise licenses that do not have SA or that do not qualify for License Mobility
Take advantage of Amazon Linux compute pricing
Manage expenses by utilizing existing on-premise software
Maintain control and visibility into physical core and processor count
Customer defines which host it will be running on for its placement and declares an
affinity between the instance and the host

Explain: The infrastructure inside public cloud providers’ datacenters is multitenant.
This means that individual servers host virtual machines representing multiple customers and customers can utilize Windows instances licensed by the Public Cloud Provider.
Microsoft server software licenses are defined for on-premises environments where customers install the software on identifiable server hardware, have access to an identifiable number of sockets and physical cores, and can assign a license to a physical server. In addition, customers can bring SQL to public cloud under License Mobility.
AWS is a Gold Certified member of the Microsoft Partner Network and licensed to sell Microsoft software under the Services Provider License Agreement.
AWS is also an authorized License Mobility partner.

Facilitator Notes:
Say: AWS offers two licensing options for its customers.
Customers can purchase license-included instances from AWS, which allow them to access fully compliant Windows instances without upfront cost or long-term investment. They can pay as they go.
Alternatively, customers can bring their existing licenses. While doing that, AWS offers dedicated options for licenses not eligible for License Mobility and default tenancy for License Mobility eligible products with Software Assurance.
Both options have their own set of advantages.
Facilitator Notes:
Say: For customers using license-included EC2 or RDS instances, AWS manages licensing compliance, supports current and many legacy versions of Microsoft software, and eliminates the need for Windows Server Client Access Licenses, or CALs. They can also pay for the license-included instances as they go with no upfront costs or long-term investments.
Customers can choose from Amazon Machine Images (AMIs) with just Microsoft Windows Server, or with Windows Server and Microsoft SQL Server pre-installed.
Facilitator Notes:
Say: What is BYOL?
BYOL, or “bring your own licenses,” is the process of bringing volume licenses to dedicated hosts or instances. BYOL refers to partners bringing licenses without Software Assurance or that do not qualify for License Mobility. These environments require physically dedicated servers.
By bringing their own licenses to AWS, the customer can take advantage of the efficiencies of the AWS Cloud while utilizing their existing investments in on-premise software. They can extend the lifecycle of their prior software versions without additional hardware costs; and they can expedite their migration to the cloud by using existing Windows images.
Facilitator Notes:
Say: By bringing Microsoft software to dedicated hosts, customers:
Can bring on-premise licenses that do not have SA or that do not qualify for License Mobility. For example, Windows Server, BizTalk, and SQL Server.
Take advantage of AWS Linux compute pricing when bringing Windows Server
Cut cost by utilizing existing investments in on-premise software
Maintain visibility into physical core and processor count required for on-premise licensing
Use services such as Instance Affinity and Targeted Placement to optimize deployment

Can bring on premise licenses user licenses that do not have SA or that do not qualify for License Mobility
Utilize instances that include Windows Server and are physically isolated at the host hardware level. For example, Office, Windows Desktop, Exchange, Remote Desktop Services and Skype for Business
Cut cost by utilizing existing investments in on-premise software

Exchange Server is eligible for License Mobility under the Software Assurance program. A license must be assigned for each instance of the server software that is being run.
Exchange Server also comes in two client access license (CAL) editions, which are referred to as a Standard CAL and an Enterprise CAL. A CAL is a license that gives a user the right to access the services of the server. The CAL license requirement does not change for Exchange on AWS.
Customers who would like to access Exchange with pay-as-you-go pricing can launch it from AWS Marketplace through Intermedia, an APN Partner.
There are two main licensing models that apply to SQL Server:
Server+Client Access License (CAL) provides the option to license users or devices with access to incremental SQL Server deployments. Each server running SQL Server software requires a server license. Server+CAL licensing is available for Standard Edition.
Per Core licensing is based on computing power and is consistent regardless of whether the software is deployed on servers on-premises or in virtual or cloud environments. Per Core licensing is available for SQL Server Enterprise Edition and Standard Edition. Enterprise Edition is available only as a Per Core licensing option.
While customers can bring Microsoft SQL Server licenses to Microsoft Azure, they must have an existing Microsoft Enterprise Agreement to do so. AWS allows customers to bring their existing SQL Server licenses, regardless of which licensing agreement they have signed with Microsoft.

SharePoint Server is eligible for License Mobility under the Software Assurance program.
SharePoint Server is required for each running instance of the software, and Standard or Enterprise CALs are required for each person or device accessing a SharePoint Server to use intranet sites delivered from the licensed SharePoint server. The CAL license requirement does not change for a SharePoint Server on AWS.
Customers who would like to access SharePoint with pay-as-you-go pricing can launch it from AWS Marketplace through Data Resolution, an APN Partner.
