importance of change and touching upon
some of the topics that will be covered in
further episodes. This part 1, shows various
elements, from the actual in person seminars
themselves, to interactive segments for the
viewer, as well as background story of the
project
7. Episode 2: Where are we?
• Looking through three lenses
▫ Enviroment
▫ Society
▫ Personal and Spiritual
8. Environment
• Industrial revolution caused exponential growth of
human population
• GDP, measurement of success, but does not measure
the loss of natural wealth
• Sustainability - The ability of the current generation to
meet its needs without compromising the ability of
future generations to meet theirs
• An ongoing destruction of or support system
9. Environment - The Tipping Point
• Peak Oil
▫ 2010-2015
▫ After this point, supply will decrease while demand
continues to increase
• Takes 5 Earths to support the North American way of
life
• Mass extinctions are occurring
▫ Lions down 90% in last few decades
▫ 90% of large ocean fish gone
10. Society
• What is a socially just world?
▫ everybody treated equal, everyone has voice, and
everyone has equal access to resources
• Growth of inequality
▫ If Earth was 100 people
⚫ 2 would own 50% of the wealth
⚫ 50 people would share 1% of wealth
⚫ 15 people hungry and malnourished
⚫ 16 have no safe drinking water
⚫ 39 with no basic sanitation
⚫ 15 unable to read

12. “Where Are We?” in Review
It was a very eye opening and disheartening episode,
highlight so much destruction and devastation around our
global community, with many people completely unaware
or uncaring about the situation. I hope that more people are
able to watch informative symposiums like this and become
more aware of just how far we are in this self destructive,
unsustainable path.
13. Episode 3- How did we get here?
Unexamined Assumptions.
• Thomas Berry- Cultural Historian and
Cosmologist
▫ Examined the relationship between
humans and the community of life
on earth
▫ Mutually enhancing presence
▫ Western civilization creates a
separation between human world
and natural world.
▫ Industrial age= period of
“technological entrancement”
14. Technological Entrancement
• Current worldview= “trance” that is
dysfunctional, therefore is also
destructive
▫ indigenous people call this trance “
The dream of the modern world”
• Obsession for progress= more
production
▫ no limits
• Actions correlate with our world view,
and often our actions can produce
outcomes that are unpredictable and
unintentional
15. What are Unexamined
Assumptions?
• Unexamined assumption= a
fact taken for granted that drives
a belief and creates an opening
for consequences to show up
▫ ex. more is better, we own
the land we live on, one little
individual can not make a
difference
• Problems that we have today
are results of unexamined
assumptions
16. Who pays?
• The natural world gives us resources to use however
we seem fit, but when humans become massively
present, the game changes.
▫ We try to get the best quality for the cheapest price.
• Who ultimately pays for the products we consume?
▫ Price we pay does not reflect the full cost of making
it.
▫ People who lose natural resource space and lose
clean air are the ones paying.
17. Being a Part of Society
• Thriving to be interdependent
▫ psychologically
▫ spiritually
▫ economically
• Institutionalized Racism
has a cost to every human;
dehumanizing the world
race causes us to “rank” people
18. “I’ll just throw it away”
• Modern society that believes that we have “throw
away” resources.
▫ Careless mindset extends into our relations with
others.
⚫ “Throw away species”
⚫ “Throw away people”- we tend to try and change
those who don’t fit into the system, rather that
changing the system that ensures some people
won’t make it.
19. Where is away?
• Julia Butterfly Hill- Author and Activist
▫ There’s no such thing as “away”
▫ “Everything that is called ‘waste’ or ‘disposable’ is
the ways in which we are saying that it is acceptable
to throw our planet, and its people, away.”
• What we throw away daily:
▫ 137 million aluminum cans
▫ 27 million paper bags
▫ 600 million plastic bottles
20. Snapping Out of the Trance
• In order to get out of the trance, we need to
start questioning these assumptions that we
have been living by.
• “We cannot have peace on the earth unless we
have peace with the earth”-Julia Butterfly Hill
• We need to become aware.
▫ Identifying unexamined assumptions helps
loosen their grip on your life.
21. Episode 3 Summary
In order to start fixing our problems, we need to first
identify them. Unexamined assumptions are causing us
to be destructive to our earth and even to our own kind.
Having “disposable” products is a way of saying that we
are okay with throwing away our planet. We need to
identify these unexamined assumptions and change
them in order to escape the technological entrancement
we are in today.
22. Episode 4- How did we get here?
Illusion of Separation.
• Assumption that “we are
separate”
▫ separation is an illusion
• “inter-be”: it is not possible to
be alone, to be by yourself.
You need other people in
order “to be”, along with other
beings, air, sunshine, water,
animals, ect.
23. All Things are Connected
• Origin of the Universe: all of
creation is connected at both
macro and micro level.
▫ We are related to
everything: plants, birds,
trees, microorganisms, etc.
• The earth wasn't “assembled”
for humans, more so humans
“came out of” the earth. -Brian
Swimme
24. Human Species: Flawed?
• Human beings have been tragically mistaken,
rather than being fundamentally flawed.
▫ There is hope if we wake up from this “trance”
• New story is shaping consciousness on the planet,
becoming unified as a whole.
• Interconnections allow us to re-choose behaviors in
many aspects of our lives.
25. Episode 4 Summary
We need to recognize that we are not alone. We are all
connected, not only with each other, but with the rest of
the planet as well. We need to break the assumption that
we are separate. In order to help solve our problems, we
need to unify; we cannot expect to be successful alone.
We are given a chance to re-choose our behaviors, as
well as a chance to “inter-be”. This assumption affects
us psychologically, emotionally and spiritually in a
harmful way, but can be changed when we open up new
doors through community and connection.
26. Episode 5: What is possible for the
future?
Things seem like they will continue the way
they are going forever, but things are changing

Institutional change, rebellion,
and collapse of power happen
all the time, even where it
seems impossible
• Berlin Wall
• Creation of European Union
• Election of Barack Obama
• The end of apartheid
• Australia’s apology to the aborigines
Lesson: good always prevails in a moral universe
28. What is emerging now?
The technology to solve our social and
environmental problems already exists
• It would cost about $200 billion per year to solve all of
our social and environmental problems
▫ That’s ⅓ of the current annual US military budget
29. Triple Bottom-line
For businesses to be successful in the future they will
need to start focusing on the triple bottom-line
• People
• Planet
• Profit
Waste is the product of bad design
• This can be improved
Innovation in food production for sustainability
• Food production emission > transportation
emissions
30. The Largest Social Movement in
Human History
2 million social and environmental justice
organizations have formed worldwide
• Digital revolution connecting everyone
• Everyone is given a voice
• Shared commitment to work towards a world
that works
Creativity
• There’s a connection between mind and
body
31. Episode 5 Summary
It may seem like the way that
things are done now will stay that
way forever, but history has
shown that things are always
changing in favor of good. Right
now, connections are being made
worldwide that could turn the tide
once again. The fight for social and environmental justice has become the
largest social movement in human history and we have the technology to solve
all of the worlds problems. It will still take conection, innovation, and creativity
to achieve our goals.
32. Episode 6: Where do we go from
here? Taking a stand

• You become an agent of change
• The future is transformed
37. Episode 6 Summary
Everyone has responsibility for
taking care of the planet we live on.
The way we live now cannot be
sustained, but by taking a stand,
changing the way we see the world,
and committing to doing our part we
create the possibility of a sustain-
able future.
38. Episode 7: Where Do We Go From
Here? Moving Into Action
• Creating this new dream
• What part do we play?
• What does it mean to take a
stand?
• What can we do individually
and what can we do together
in changing direction of the
human family?

Stand?
We go from having a point of view from the
world to actually having a vision
• Opening up possibilities
• Committed to bringing forth an
environmentally sustainable, spiritually
fulfilling, and socially just human presence
on this planet
