18. מאפייני מערכת emergence More is different : A critical mass of ants is necessary for useful statistical averages to emerge. One or two ants bumping against each other does not a colony make. Ignorance is Useful : Simplicity of the individual components (ie: the ants) is beneficial. There is no need for each ant to have imprinted a map of what is in the colony's best interests, and in fact such ideas would be a detriment to the colony as a whole. Encourage random encounters : Johnson illustrates how ants use the feedback from encountering the activities of other ants to usefully modify their behavior. Similarly, Jane Jacobs, in The Death and Life of Great American Cities , shows how humans in urban areas positively effect the emergence of cities by their encounters in public areas. Look for Patterns in the Signs : Ants follow trails of pheromones left by other ants. Programmers have modeled this behavior when creating computer software that emerges from very simple programs that leave behind digital pheromone trails of their own. Pay Attention to Your Neighbors : "Local information leads to global wisdom." When an ant notices a large number of his fellow ants are foraging, he will alter his behavior to another activity. Likewise, in the development of a human embryo, individual cells are able to get information from their neighbors that will guide them in their own formation, whether that be as skin cells, bone cells, muscle cells... From ants, Johnson jumps straight into the world wide web. He cites Slashdot.org , the news aggregation web site that directly engages its users to control the quality of its content and has done so since its inception in the late 1990's. With its users as the "ants" Slashdot has all the elements of an emergent system: positive and negative feedback, structured randomness, neighbor interactions, and decentralized control. As Johnson points out, user-ratings provide exactly the sort of decentralized feedback necessary for emergence. And there are far more examples today than there were in 2001 when Emergence was first published: Digg , Reddit , Amazon , and Technorati are all employing bottom-up theory in building their own versions of macro-intelligence. 26. An emergent behavior or emergent property can appear when a number of simple entities (agents) operate in an environment, forming more complex behaviors as a collective. If emergence happens over disparate size scales, then the reason is usually a causal relation across different scales. In other words there is often a form of top-down feedback in systems with emergent properties. [4] The processes from which emergent properties result may occur in either the observed or observing system, and can commonly be identified by their patterns of accumulating change, most generally called 'growth'. Why emergent behaviours occur include: intricate causal relations across different scales and feedback, known as interconnectivity . The emergent property itself may be either very predictable or unpredictable and unprecedented, and represent a new level of the system's evolution. The complex behaviour or properties are not a property of any single such entity, nor can they easily be predicted or deduced from behaviour in the lower-level entities: they are irreducible. No physical property of an individual molecule of any gas would lead one to think that a large collection of them will transmit sound. [ citation needed ] The shape and behaviour of a flock of birds [1] or school of fish are also good examples. One reason why emergent behaviour is hard to predict is that the number of interactions between components of a system increases combinatorially with the number of components, thus potentially allowing for many new and subtle types of behaviour to emerge. For example, the possible interactions between groups of molecules grows enormously with the number of molecules such that it is impossible for a computer to even list the arrangements for a system as small as 20 molecules. [ citation needed ]
27. מקור 1 On the other hand, merely having a large number of interactions is not enough by itself to guarantee emergent behaviour; many of the interactions may be negligible or irrelevant, or may cancel each other out. In some cases, a large number of interactions can in fact work against the emergence of interesting behaviour, by creating a lot of "noise" to drown out any emerging "signal"; the emergent behaviour may need to be temporarily isolated from other interactions before it reaches enough critical mass to be self-supporting. Thus it is not just the sheer number of connections between components which encourages emergence; it is also how these connections are organised. A hierarchical organisation is one example that can generate emergent behaviour (a bureaucracy may behave in a way quite different from that of the individual humans in that bureaucracy); but perhaps more interestingly, emergent behaviour can also arise from more decentralized organisational structures, such as a marketplace. In some cases, the system has to reach a combined threshold of diversity, organisation, and connectivity before emergent behaviour appears. Unintended consequences and side effects are closely related to emergent properties. Luc Steels writes: "A component has a particular functionality but this is not recognizable as a subfunction of the global functionality. Instead a component implements a behaviour whose side effect contributes to the global functionality [...] Each behaviour has a side effect and the sum of the side effects gives the desired functionality" ( Steels 1990 ). In other words, the global or macroscopic functionality of a system with "emergent functionality" is the sum of all "side effects", of all emergent properties and functionalities. Systems with emergent properties or emergent structures may appear to defy entropic principles and the second law of thermodynamics , because they form and increase order despite the lack of command and central control. This is possible because open systems can extract information and order out of the environment. Emergence helps to explain why the fallacy of division is a fallacy. According to an emergent perspective, intelligence emerges from the connections between neurons, and from this perspective it is not necessary to propose a "soul" to account for the fact that brains can be intelligent, even though the individual neurons of which they are made are not. 29. Simplicity + complexity = simplexity הצעה למדע חדש – הגדרה מחדש כיצד אנו מתבוננים בעולם ומשתמשים בראייה חדשה זאת לשיפור חיינו Of all the things that confuse human beings, perhaps nothing trips us up so much as what it means for something to be simple or complex. A houseplant, with its microhydraulics, fine-tuned metabolism and dense schematic of nucleic acids, may be more complex than a manufacturing plant. A modern army, with its thicket of bureaucracy and static encampments, may be simpler than a nimble guerrilla group. A guppy, with its symphony of biological systems and subsystems, is vastly more complicated than a star. Human beings are not wired to look at things this way. We're suckers for size, for flash, for speed, for scale; we mistake immensity for complexity and subtlety for simplicity. That has very often been our undoing. http://www.simplexitybook.com/SimplexityExcerpt.html

Simplicity + complexity = simplexity הצעה למדע חדש – הגדרה מחדש כיצד אנו מתבוננים בעולם ומשתמשים בראייה חדשה זאת לשיפור חיינו Jeffrey Kluger shows how a drinking straw can save thousands of lives; how a million cars can be on the streets but just a few hundred of them can lead to gridlock; how investors behave like atoms; and why swatting a TV indeed makes it work better. In introducing this concept, Kluger provides new insight to the following areas: Politics: Kluger argues that voters who are given a lot of electoral choices often end up electing a candidate most of them don’t want. (pg. 99) Design: Kluger offers reasons why filmmakers assigned to a temporary project operate more efficiently than designers, engineers and technicians who work face-toface in a structured setting week after week. 65. Zoom in zoom out The lens through which leaders view the world can help or hinder their ability to make good strategic decisions, especially during crises. Zoom in, and get a close look at select details—perhaps too close to make sense of them. Zoom out, and see the big picture—but perhaps miss some subtleties and nuances. Zoom buttons on digital devices let us examine images from many viewpoints. They also provide an apt metaphor for modes of strategic thinking. Some people prefer to see things up close, others from afar. Both perspectives—worm’s-eye and bird’s-eye—have virtues and pathologies. But they should be vantage points, not fixed positions. Leaders need multiple perspectives to get a complete picture. Effective leaders zoom in and zoom out. he zoom framework offers a dynamic model that can help current and aspiring leaders increase their own range of vision and establish conditions that enable others’ success. In this article, I will identify the behavior and decision modes associated with zooming in and contrast them with those for zooming out. I’ll consider the structures and cultures that trap people in dysfunctional default positions, and I’ll conclude with ideas on developing capabilities for zooming to all levels. Zooming In Zooming in brings the details into sharp focus. Any opportunities look large and compelling, though they may lack some context. http://hbr.org/2011/03/managing-yourself-zoom-in-zoom-out/ar/1
