Asian Studies on the Pacific Coast (ASPAC)
Asian Studies on the Pacific Coast (ASPAC), an affiliate of the national Association for Asian
Studies (AAS), has promoted Asian Studies in the region since 1966, primarily through its annual
conferences. While universities in the states of California, Oregon and Washington have hosted
the majority of these sessions, ASPAC has also met in Hawaii, Alaska, Canada and Guam.
ASPAC has always taken special pride in providing a welcoming and supportive conference
atmosphere for young faculty members and graduate students, and for many years has offered a
prize for the best graduate student paper. ASPAC, a non-profit, volunteer-run organization, has
been sustained over this half-century by the dedicated efforts of its board members, its university
conference hosts, and its regular attendees. Newcomers are cordially invited and urged to help
keep the tradition alive by supporting and participating in ASPAC.
The ASPAC-Mori Prize for Graduate Students is named in honor of Professor Barbara Mori of
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. As a long-time ASPAC member, Professor Mori advocated Asian
studies, including Asian musicology, her area of expertise. She passed away in 2013, leaving a
generous donation in support of this graduate student prize. Through this prize, ASPAC
recognizes extraordinary graduate student scholarship. It is open to all students pursuing
graduate studies in any discipline, at any American university, and in any area of research
pertaining to Asian Studies, with awards presented at the conference banquet.
California State University, Northridge (CSUN)
California State University, Northridge (CSUN) serves more than 40,000 students each year
and is one of the largest universities in the United States. CSUN ranks 16th in the country in

Performances and Exhibits
Friday Reception
CSUN Jishin Taiko
Jishin in Japanese means earthquake, as well as self-
confidence. Originally started as part of the Nikkei Student
Association in 1995 after the Northridge earthquake, Jishin
began anew in 2002 and was chartered as an official CSUN
club in 2005.  CSUN's Jishin Taiko Ensemble is born of an
interest in not only Japanese taiko and Japanese culture, but
it is also born of a desire to form an interpersonal social
connection with the Japanese-American community at CSU Northridge. To that end, Jishin
Taiko's goals as a performing ensemble is to perform not only at CSUN but also in the
surrounding community, serving both audiences in order to entertain, enrich and educate about
Japanese culture and the traditional Japanese arts.
Soprano Xuanjin Bi
A soprano singer, Xuanjin Bi graduated from Shanghai Normal University
with a B.A. in vocal performance. In 2008 she won first prize in a Shanghai
pop singer competition and third prize in a national singing competition. She
is currently a graduate student studying vocal music in the Music
Department at CSUN.
Lobby, East Conference Center
CSUN-Sanda University Art Exhibit
In April, Sanda University in Shanghai and CSUN held the second
joint exhibition featuring student artwork from both institutions in
the West Gallery at CSUN. The first joint exhibition was held at
the Shanghai Mass Cultural Museum in Shanghai in June 2014.
This is a collaboration that will again occur in Shanghai in 2018.
An accompanying catalog was produced for both exhibitions and
will be on display at the conference. The exceptional works created by students at both
Universities attests to their talents and speaks to the significance of continuing this international
exchange. Discussions for future faculty and student exchanges are ongoing and a plan has been
developed for a few CSUN faculty to visit Sanda in June 2017 to offer workshops and classes.

  • 4. Asian Studies on the Pacific Coast (ASPAC) Asian Studies on the Pacific Coast (ASPAC), an affiliate of the national Association for Asian Studies (AAS), has promoted Asian Studies in the region since 1966, primarily through its annual conferences. While universities in the states of California, Oregon and Washington have hosted the majority of these sessions, ASPAC has also met in Hawaii, Alaska, Canada and Guam. ASPAC has always taken special pride in providing a welcoming and supportive conference atmosphere for young faculty members and graduate students, and for many years has offered a prize for the best graduate student paper. ASPAC, a non-profit, volunteer-run organization, has been sustained over this half-century by the dedicated efforts of its board members, its university conference hosts, and its regular attendees. Newcomers are cordially invited and urged to help keep the tradition alive by supporting and participating in ASPAC. The ASPAC-Mori Prize for Graduate Students is named in honor of Professor Barbara Mori of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. As a long-time ASPAC member, Professor Mori advocated Asian studies, including Asian musicology, her area of expertise. She passed away in 2013, leaving a generous donation in support of this graduate student prize. Through this prize, ASPAC recognizes extraordinary graduate student scholarship. It is open to all students pursuing graduate studies in any discipline, at any American university, and in any area of research pertaining to Asian Studies, with awards presented at the conference banquet. California State University, Northridge (CSUN) California State University, Northridge (CSUN) serves more than 40,000 students each year and is one of the largest universities in the United States. CSUN ranks 16th in the country in awarding bachelor’s degrees to underrepresented minority students, fifth nationally in awarding master’s degrees to Hispanic students and enrolls the largest number of deaf and hard-of-hearing students of any mainstream university in the United States. CSUN’s 171 academic programs and engaged centers enjoy international recognition for their excellence. CSUN currently partners with more than 100 institutions of higher education in 22 countries around the globe and attracts the second-largest international student population of any U.S. master’s-level institution. Situated on a 356-acre park-like setting in the heart of Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley, the campus features modern educational buildings and world-class LEED Gold-certified performing arts and recreational facilities recognized as among the best in the country. CSUN is a welcoming university that champions accessibility, academic excellence and student success. 2

  • 10. Performances and Exhibits Friday Reception CSUN Jishin Taiko Jishin in Japanese means earthquake, as well as self- confidence. Originally started as part of the Nikkei Student Association in 1995 after the Northridge earthquake, Jishin began anew in 2002 and was chartered as an official CSUN club in 2005.  CSUN's Jishin Taiko Ensemble is born of an interest in not only Japanese taiko and Japanese culture, but it is also born of a desire to form an interpersonal social connection with the Japanese-American community at CSU Northridge. To that end, Jishin Taiko's goals as a performing ensemble is to perform not only at CSUN but also in the surrounding community, serving both audiences in order to entertain, enrich and educate about Japanese culture and the traditional Japanese arts. Soprano Xuanjin Bi A soprano singer, Xuanjin Bi graduated from Shanghai Normal University with a B.A. in vocal performance. In 2008 she won first prize in a Shanghai pop singer competition and third prize in a national singing competition. She is currently a graduate student studying vocal music in the Music Department at CSUN. Lobby, East Conference Center CSUN-Sanda University Art Exhibit In April, Sanda University in Shanghai and CSUN held the second joint exhibition featuring student artwork from both institutions in the West Gallery at CSUN. The first joint exhibition was held at the Shanghai Mass Cultural Museum in Shanghai in June 2014. This is a collaboration that will again occur in Shanghai in 2018. An accompanying catalog was produced for both exhibitions and will be on display at the conference. The exceptional works created by students at both Universities attests to their talents and speaks to the significance of continuing this international exchange. Discussions for future faculty and student exchanges are ongoing and a plan has been developed for a few CSUN faculty to visit Sanda in June 2017 to offer workshops and classes.
