LEARNING TARGETS
PROVIDES INDEPENDENT RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL STUDENTS:
Students engage in structured research based upon their particular artist. We will ask
Kelley to introduce / reinforce research protocols and discuss tools available to students.
Class time, before, and after school times will be made available to students to complete
work.
I. COMPELLING/ENGAGING TOPIC
CONNECTION TO COMMUNITY
Students explore the connection between art and culture in relation to their target language. Students
meet local professional artists and use their understanding of art and culture to design and present a
personal piece of art in response to these topics.
GUIDING QUESTIONS
1. How does (Hispanic/Francophone) culture manifest itself in (Hispanic/Francophone) art?
2. What connects you to an artist?
Students must apply their understanding of the GQs to their particular artist and her/his culture
through comparison, analysis, and constructing support.
MULTIPLE PERSPECTIVES
Students are exposed to the experiences and perspectives of a wide spectrum of professional
artists within the community. Students select the artist they will study and design an individual
creative product. Readings and other activities provide multiple points of view on art and culture
upon which students reflect. The target languages will be interwoven throughout expedition
activities.

ASSESSMENT
Cf. STA document
INCLUDES HIGH QUALITY WRITING/CRAFTSMANSHIP
Our high-quality writing piece is the French/Spanish essay. Students learn and review grammar,
peer edit, and fine-tune their essays. A high level of craftsmanship is demanded in all expedition
products culminating in the final creative product exhibited in a gallery setting.
EXEMPLARS/PROD.DESC./RUBRIC:
Exemplars have been developed for most aspects of this expedition. Product
descriptors and rubrics have been developed for all elements of this expedition.
We also use student work from previous years to demonstrate high-quality work.
DESCRIPTION G. Q. Target Know/Skills
Each student is responsible for developing a creative project based in
part on their artist research, their understanding of that artist’s work,
and their own interpretation of their artist’s life and work. The work of
the professional artists involved in the kick-off provides potential ideas
for the student's final products. The final product must demonstrate a
high level of craftsmanship, a connection to artist and self, and
creativity.
OII. COMPREHENSIVE FINAL PRODUCT(S)
ACCOMMODATIONS FOR DIFFERENTIATION
Students are allowed to choose their own artist and the medium in which they will create their final
product. They also take a multiple intelligences survey to help determine their own particular
strengths as well as participate in one-on-one conferences with the teacher regarding their
progress with different elements of the expedition. Afterschool Artist Workshops will also be
offered for those students requiring extra help and / or time.
ADAPTED FROM PROFESSIONAL PRODUCT
PLAN FOR PORTFOLIO
* We will make the Final Essay and/or
Independent Fieldwork Act. available for
inclusion in student's portfolios.

MAJOR LEARNING RESOURCES
RESOURCES/ANCHOR TEXT
We are currently compiling an ELOB-type readings collection that students will
access during the expedition. We are anticipating assigning some of the readings
and giving choices for others. Students will journal about selected readings and
use their new understandings about art and culture to better inform their own
independent work.
