Engine Performance Parameter
The engine performance is indicated by the term efficiency 𝜂. Five important
engine efficiencies and other related engines performance parameters are given
below.
1. Break Thermal Efficiency –
It is the ratio of break power to the input
fuel energy in appropriate units.
𝜂𝑏th =
𝑏𝑝
𝑀𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑓𝑢𝑒𝑙/𝑠 × 𝐶𝑎𝑙𝑜𝑟𝑖𝑓𝑖𝑐 𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑓𝑢𝑒𝑙
𝜂𝑏th =
𝑏𝑝
𝑚𝑓 × 𝐶𝑉
2. Indicated Thermal Efficiency –
It is the ratio of the energy in the
indicated power to the input fuel energy in appropriate units.
𝜂𝑖th =
𝑖𝑝
𝑀𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑓𝑢𝑒𝑙/𝑠 × 𝐶𝑎𝑙𝑜𝑟𝑖𝑓𝑖𝑐 𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑓𝑢𝑒𝑙
𝜂𝑖th =
𝑖𝑝
𝑚𝑓 × 𝐶𝑉
3. MechanicalEfficiency –
It is the ratio of the break power (delivered
power) to the indicated power (power provide by piston). It is also defined as
the ratio of break thermal efficiency to the indicated thermal efficiency.
𝜂𝑚 =
𝑏𝑝
𝑖𝑝
=
𝑏𝑝
𝑏𝑝 + 𝑓𝑝
𝑓𝑝 = 𝑖𝑝 − 𝑏𝑝
