As the co-founder of AppDemoStore.com, an easy-to-use tool for creating and sharing interactive app demos, I have helped many app entrepreneurs and companies showcase their app ideas to investors and gave a couple of presentations and pitches myself.
This article presents some valuable lessons I learnt about pitching and describes a simple and smart solution to showcase your app idea to investors.
Your app must solve a real problem, not change the world
A good presentation should start with the motivation of the app. My advice is to save your time trying to come up with an answer to the question “How does your app change the world?” (because it probably doesn’t), and rather find an interactive way to explain the problem your app solves. For example, if you have a dating app idea, you could start your presentation with the question “How many of you are single?”. Make sure you ask a general question, so that most of the attendees have the chance to raise their hand, such as “How many of you own an iPhone?”.
Keep this in mind:
Use the power of storytelling; create a context for your app and walk them through the main benefits by telling an appealing story.
Demo time
Go to the demo right after presenting the problem. No matter how cool a PowerPoint or video can be, investors prefer to see the real app. Nothing will convince an investor better than getting to touch “The app” and see how it feels. If your app is not developed yet or it is still buggy or has a poor performance, you can build a rapid clickable demo out of screenshots, that will simulate the real app. Read further to learn how to easily achieve this.
Keep this in mind:
Don’t lose precious time and show them the app as soon as possible. Let them play with it and be ready to gather as much feedback as you can.
The end should be the beginning
End your presentation by encouraging your audience to try your app and give you feedback. Here are some smart options if your app is not available in the App Store or Google Play yet:
Direct them to the app landing page where you offer a simulation or demo.
Explain them how to install a test or demo version of your app on their mobile devices.
Keep this in mind:
The end of the presentation should be the beginning of your audience testing the app.
