INTRODUCTION
-
Gastro-retentive drug delivery system (GRDDS) is particularly used to improve
bioavailability of the drugs, which have narrow absorption window down in the levels of
gastrointestinal tract and also to treat local disorders. In recent times scientific and
technological advancement have been made in Research and Development of GRDDS.
Gastro Retentive Drug Delivery System is an attempt to release drug slowly in GIT and
maintain an effective drug concentration in systemic circulation for drugs that are easily
absorbed from GIT and have short lives are eliminated quickly from the systemic
circulation requiring frequent dosing to achieve optimum activity.

RECENT ADVANCES IN GRDDS
CONCLUSION
Gastroretentive drug delivery systems have emerged as a current approaches of
enhancing bioavailability and controlled delivery of drugs .These systems not only
provide controlled release of the drug but also present the drug in an absorbable
form at the regions of optimal absorbtion. To design a successful GRDDS, it is
necessary to take into consideration the physicochemical properties of the drug,
physiological events in the GIT, formulation strategies, and correct combination of
drug and excipients.

Abstract:
Gastro-retentive drug delivery system (GRDDS) is particularly used to improve
bioavailability of the drugs, which have narrow absorption window down in the levels of
gastrointestinal tract and also to treat local disorders. Current approaches used for
preparation of gastro-retentive drug delivery system offers limited functional features to
control the floating behavior. Effective oral drug delivery depends upon factors such as
Gastric Emptying, drug release from the dosage form. In recent times scientific and
technological advancement have been made in Research and Development of GRDDS. It is
one of the most novel approaches in area of the oral sustained release dosage forms. Hence
worth a wide spectrum of dosage form have been developed for drugs which are unstable
at intestinal pH, soluble in acidic pH. Gastro Retentive Drug Delivery System is an attempt to
release drug slowly in GIT and maintain an effective drug concentration in systemic
circulation for drugs that are easily absorbed from GIT and have short lives are eliminated
quickly from the systemic circulation requiring frequent dosing to achieve optimum activity.
The present review focuses on the currently utilized Gastro Retentive Drug Delivery Systems
like Floating System, Swelling and Expanding System, Bioadhesive or mucoadhesive system,
High Density System and other delayed gastric emptying devices.
