used in courtship rituals. They become more mainstream in the
1920s after the performers such as Atang de la Rama, Joveta
Fuentes, Coching Rosal, Sylvia la Torre and Ruben
Tagalog introduced them to a wider audience.
 The harana is rooted in the Mexican-Spanish tradition and based
on the rhythmic patterns of the habanera.
 The kundiman has its pre-colonial origins from theTagalophone
parts of the country, uses a triple meter rhythm, and is
characterized by beginning in a minor key and shifting to a
major one in the major half.

• Dance from Leyte. Involves two individual performs
hitting bamboo poles, using to beat, tap, and slide on
the ground in coordination with one or more dancers
who steps over and in between poles.

fan and handkerchief in amplifying romantic gestures
expressed by the couple performing the traditional
courtship dance. Carinosa means “loving” or
“affectionate one”.

• The Philippine Madrigal Singers( originally the
University of the Philipines Madrigal Singers)
is one of the famous choral groups not only in the
Philippine but also worldwide.

• Originally came from the United States and
introduced it during their occupation to Filipinos
• The medium was Tagalog, time when the Filipino
adapted this music way back 1950s but later on they
began writing in English in 1970 and local languages
and Taglish(Tagalog and English) in early 1970s
• “Ang Miss Universe ng Buhay Ko” is an example
of this.

• Another genre that utilizes traditional instruments and found
objects in personal compositions. A series of albums havebeen
recorded and released by Ambahayan Productions like Kubing
Album.

• Hip-Hop music or also known as rap music. Filipino
hip-hop is music performed by musicians of Filipino
descent, both in the Philippines and overseas,
especially by Filipino-Americans. Hip-Hop music
originated from the U.S. Rap music, released in the
Philippines appeared in different languages such as
Tagalog, Chavacano, Cebuano, Ilocano and English.
• Most influential rappers in the country are Francis M,
Gloc-9 and Andrew E.

which is unrehearsed and played in the public.
