2. • Yerevan is the capital and largest city
of Armenia and one of the
world's oldest continuously inhabited
cities. Situated along the Hrazdan
River, Yerevan is the
administrative, cultural, and
industrial center of the country. It has
been the capital since 1918, the
thirteenth in the history of Armenia.
3. The emblem has the following description: there is a lion depicted on
the pedestal with the inscription “Yerevan” made with bronze
Armenian initials on the blue background, with its head turned back
and holding a scepter, which is the attribute of power. There is a crown
depicted over his head with a flower rising from its center and
symbolizing the tree of life. The symbol of eternity is on the breast of
the lion with a picture of the mountain Ararat in its upper part. The
emblem has a form of a rectangular shield with the blue border line.
Apricot and bronze colors are used in the emblem. The author of the
emblem is Albert Sokhikyan.

4. “By the greatness of the God Khaldi, Argishti, son of Menua, built this
mighty stronghold in 782 BC and proclaimed it Erebuni for the glory of
Biainili [Urartu] and to the fear of its enemies. Argishti says, "The land
was a desert, before the great works I accomplished upon it. By the
greatness of Khaldi, Argishti, son of Menua, is a mighty king, king of
Biainili, and ruler of Tushpa."

5. • This cuneiform inscription indicates that the
Urartian military fortress of Erebuni was founded in
782 BC by the orders of King Argishti I at the site of
current-day Yerevan, to serve as a fort and citadel
guarding against attacks from the north Caucasian
tribes Skythians and Alans.
The first settlement appeared around Erebuni in the 7th AD and was called Yerevan.
6. THE NAME OF YEREVAN COMES

• In one of old documents <<Girq Grqots>> the
city’s name was first mentioned as Yerevan in
the` 7th century AD.
• According to one theory the name Yeravan
derived from the king’s name Yervand the 4-
th, the founder of the city Yervandashat.
• Another theory claims that the name Yerevan
originated from the name Erebuni.
7. CAPITAL YEREVAN
• It has been the capital since
1918 on May 28, when the
Dashnak leader Aram
Manukyan proclaimed the first
Armenian Democratic
Republic.

10. Tsitsernakaberd is the name of the Armenian Genocide
monument and museum. Literally it means "Fortress of
swallows“. it is located on a hill overlooking Yerevan.
11. The Cascade
The Cascades, reminds a scene of a river cascade, was built in the 1970s, or rather began construction, since
then it has been improving . A huge monument nonetheless, these massive white stairs climb much of the
way up the hillside, linking central Yerevan to the WWI monument and platform on top, and behind it, the
neighborhood called Monument.

12. Matenadaran - The Museum of Ancient Manuscripts
Matenadaran, which was built in 1959, has one of the world's largest manuscript collections in
the world and has the largest collection of Armenian manuscripts.
