2. INTRODUCTION
• The word ‘Laboratory’ was originally
applied to the work-room of a chemist,
a place devoted to experimental study
in natural sciences.
• The use of the laboratory method in
nursing is by providing opportunities to
students to use a problem-solving
approach to the development of
techniques in a controlled learning
environment.
3. DEFINITION
• The Laboratory Method is a procedure
involving first hand experiences with
materials or facts derived from investigations
or experimentation.
• Laboratory method of teaching utilized a
problem solving approach to learning that
offers students opportunities for
supervised ,individualized, and direct
experiences in the testing and application of
previous learned theories.
4. PURPOSES
• To provide first hand experience with
materials or facts
• To provide experiences with actual
situation
• To make student to become skillful in
manipulation apparatus, practising
laboratory technique.
• It helps student to acquire scientific
attitudes and scientific approach in
problem-solving.
6. INTRODUCTORY STEP
(a) Determination of Laboratory work to be done
• It requires establishment of objectives and plan of
work.
• first step is an explanation of the problem
• teacher’s opportunity to motivate the students by
presnting problem and work on solution together .
(b) Determination of the Plan of Work
• The second step is to get clearly in mind what is to
be done. This may be set forth by the teacher who
gives the necessary directions for both individual
and group work.
7. WORK PERIOD
• It refers to the period of demonstration,
experimentation or practice of skill in nursing
procedure.
• Ensure availability of adequate equipments
• The laboratory activity should take the form of a
supervised work-period in which groups or individuals
have their particular work to do.
• The students can work individually or collectively.
• The length of the work periods should be determined
by the nature of the problems and the objectives.
8. CULMINATING ACTIVITIES
• When work is completed, the class should meet
for discussion and for presentation of the results
of individual work.
Activities included :
• Students re-state the problem and explain its
nature and importance.
• Review of the plan for solving the problem
• Presentation of illustrative material students
working on problems.
• Students working on individual projects, reports
may be given with an exhibition of their work.
9. • Note-books and written reports .
• Work of the class may be exhibited
and rated
• Exhibits of various projects may be
set up and explained.
• Tests or examinations may be used
as a means of measuring
achievement relative to certain
outcomes.
10. ADVANTAGES:
• It helps student to master the subject.
• It helps in participation of student
• Teacher can provide various kinds of learning
experiences to the students.
• Individual differences and interest of all the
students are taken into consideration.
• Child centred method, As full freedom is
provided to them to participate in the laboratory
activities, as a result of which they begin to
learn various information by doing works
themselves.
11. ADVANTAGES CONT...
• Students learn to explore various things on their
own.
• Practical skills and proficiency get developed .
• An intimate relationship got developed in
between the students and teacher, as students
are required to acquire necessary guidance for
performing practical work.
• Teacher can develop various good habits among
the students..
• Student learn to perform work on their own and
independently.
• Habit of team work gets developed in them
12. DISADVANTAGES
• Some knowledge cannot be verified through
experiments,so method has limited
applicability.
• Sometimes teachers do not allow the
students to make experiments independently,
as it involves certain kind of risk .
• Availability of separate equipments for all
and other materials is not possible.
• For procuring the essential materials and
facilities, a huge amount of funds are
required.
13. DISADVANTAGES CONT...
• Students feel heavy burden as a result
they do not get involved in the exploration
with their fullest capacities.
• Sometimes, teacher find it difficult to
attend to the individual needs of the
students, as they differ from each other to
considerable extent.
• As a result ,students get discouraged and
it becomes very difficult for teacher to
provide timely help and guidance to them.
14. SUMMARY
• Through this topic we came to
know about laboratory method
of teaching , its purposes ,
techniques ,advantages ,
disadvantages etc.
15. CONCLUSION
• The Laboratory Method is a planned learning
activity dealing with original or raw data in the
solution of problem. It is a procedure involving
first hand experiences with materials or facts
derived from investigations or experimentation.
• Of it, the Laboratory Method is not one that may
be used exclusively. Used in conjunction with
some other techniques, it may be a very
effective means of collecting evidence in the
solution of problems.
