The Blessings of the New Covenant
1.
2.
3. A legal term.
Of greater significance than a contract.
A seal was required.
Often used in land law.
Requires a covenantor and a
covenantee.
Has burdens and benefits.
Can be enforced by a Judge alone.
4. THE OLD COVENANT
The Law given to Moses, starting with
the Ten Commandments written on
stone
Made up of Rules and Regulations
Depends on obedience to ensure
blessings
5. Hebrews 8:1-7
Christ is our High Priest. A new and
superior priesthood. He sacrificed
his own life for our sins once and for
all.
We have a far better covenant. The
New Covenant does not depend on
our ability to keep rules and
regulations.
We have been given better promises.
6. The day is coming, says the Lord,
when I will make a new covenant with
the people of Israel and Judah. This
covenant will not be like the one I
made with their ancestors.. They did
not remain faithful to my
covenant….But this is the new
covenant I will make with the people
of Israel… I will put my laws in their
hearts. I will be their God, and they
will be my people…. Everyone from
the least to the greatest will know me
already. And I will forgive their
wickedness, and I will never again
remember their sins.
7. The new commandment of love
Inner principles
GOD gives us the
understanding to know them,
hearts to love them, courage to
profess them, and power to
put them into practice.
They are no longer burdens. In
Christ, we delight to do God’s
will.
8. The New Covenant does what the
Old Covenant could not do. The Old
Covenant demanded obedience, but
could not help men obey.
The New Covenant enables us to
obey God through the power of the
Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit provides the
believer with love for God's law and
with power to keep it.
11. What are we free from?
(a) slavery to the law: Gal. 5:1
(b) slavery to sin: Rom. 6:6-7.
Stay free and do not to get
entangled again with slavery to
the law.
12. Remember the word “contextual”.
Applying the law to the circumstances of
the case.
See and understand all Scripture with a
New Covenant lens. Be careful how we
take a Bible passage which applies to
someone living under the Old Covenant
and apply it wholesale to ourselves as
believers.
Do not interpret Scripture in a way which
makes us again slaves to the law.
13. Andrew Murray "Covenants and
Blessings"
Is the Old Covenant spirit of bondage
within you?
There are three possible lives: one
entirely under the law, one entirely
under grace, and one a mixed life,
partly law, partly grace. It is this mixed
life that is so common and works such
ruin among Christians….
