2. OBJECTIVE
To understand the species diversity
of Coleopterans in the Narikode
village under Ezhome Grama
Panchayat of Kannur.
3. INTODUCTION
O Coleoptera- Largest and diverse order of class
Insecta.
O Every fifth living creature on this planet is a
beetle.
O Holometabolous insect.
O India being situated in tropics well known for
coleopteran fauna.
4. SIGNIFICANCE
O Known to play an important role in the
ecosystem as predators, prey, scavengers, and
vectors of plant diseases.
O Often measured by the economic cost of the
damage.
O The economic benefit of some species used in
controlling various pest of noxious plants.
O Developing insect-pest management
strategies.
5. METHODOLOGY
O Study area is Narikode Village under Ezhome
Grama Panchayat, Kannur district, with special
reference to ward V of the village.
O Is a small beautiful village with different
habitat types.
6. METHODOLOGY(cont….)
O Study period – Four months from March to
June, 2015.
O Morning and evening hours most preferable
for beetle collection.
O Collection methods include Hand picking,
Beating, Arial netting, and Light trap.
O Identified with the help of available
monographs from books and papers.
8. OBSERVATION
O 55 species of beetles distributed over 53 genera
belonging to 25 families were recorded.
O Two beetles among the collection was identified
only upto family level.
O Highest number was recorded in the family
Cerambycidae, with a total of 6 species.
O The second highest number was recorded in two
families with 5 species- family Coccinellidae and
Tenebrionidae.
9. OBSERVATION(cont…)
O Majority of beetles collected were pests.
O Coccinella transversalis and Cheilomenes
sexmaculata- act as predators of some crops.
O Altica sp. and Rhodolia cardinalis also act as a
biological control agent.
34. CONCLUSION
O Coleopteran fauna in the study area is
qualitatively rich.
O Heterogeneity of the habitat is the main
reason for species richness.
O Presence of beneficial and harmful beetles.
O Majority of the beetles are pests and a few act
as biological control agents.
35. CONCLUSION (cont…)
O Present structure of natural habitats of the
area should be protected being devastated.
O Large number of pests indicates the necessity
of control measures.
O Provide baseline data for further studies.
