Talk at the Norwegian Networking event before the 2023 RDA meeting in Gothenburg, regarding the need to rethink how academic positions are organised and what we are demand from our researchers. The era of the lone researcher is gone, and research teams are the future. But that also means that the system needs to acknowledge more competencies and the various roles needed to have successful research output.

The lone researcher is expected to fulfill all these roles
These demands are often decided upon in homogenous groups
Those not fulfilling demands are often mocked and categorised as poor researchers
RSEs are often involved in research projects that require complex software, data management, and data analysis. They work closely with researchers to develop software that is reproducible, reusable, and adaptable. RSEs also provide training and support to researchers enabling them to take advantage of the latest tools and techniques.
They understand the needs of researchers and are able to translate those needs into software solutions. They also have a deep understanding of the research process and the importance of reproducibility and open science.
Overall, the RSE community is diverse and includes individuals with a wide range of backgrounds and expertise. However, they share a common goal of supporting research through the development of high-quality software that is designed for reproducibility, reusability, and scalability.
