Diabetes is the most incorrectly coded diagnosis – most of the patients are
coded as if they have absolutely no complications; therefore, the claims
data is not able to accurately capture the intensity of the services provided.
3. The Epidemic
• 20.8 million children and adults – 7%
– Diagnosed: 14.6 million people
– Undiagnosed: 6.2 million people
– Pre-diabetes: 54 million people
• 1.5 million new cases of diabetes were
diagnosed in people aged 20 years or
older in 2005.

4. Incidence of Complications
• Diabetic retinopathy – estimated at 50% of patients with diabetes, and is the leading
cause of new cases of blindness each year.
• Diabetic nephropathy - Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure, accounting
for 44% of new cases in 2008.
• Diabetic neuropathy - 60% to 70% of people with diabetes have mild to severe
forms of nervous system damage.
• Hypertension – 67% of people with diabetes have BP > 140/90 or use Rx meds for
hypertension
• Peripheral circulatory disorders - More than 60% of nontraumatic lower-limb
amputations occur in people with diabetes. The rate of amputation for people with
diabetes is 10 times higher than for people without diabetes.
• Periodontal (gum) disease - One-third of people with diabetes have severe
periodontal disease with loss of attachment of the gums to the teeth measuring 5
millimeters or more.
• Depression – People with diabetes are twice as likely to have depression.
• Sexual Dysfunction
– Men with diabetes are 2 times as likely to experience erectile dysfunction as men without diabetes.
– Women with type 1 diabetes are twice as likely to experience prevalence of sexual dysfunction compared
with women without diabetes.
