Best Places for Adventure Travel Holidays
When you travel, are you more of an all-inclusive resort kind of guy/gal or do you prefer to sign up for a
homestay with a local family? Do you take the road less traveled rather than follow the crowd? Would
you peek behind the curtain to see the real wizard of Oz or be too chicken to do so? Do you like to
challenge yourself and step outside your comfort zone in a foreign country? If yes, then you are an
adventure traveler hands down.
So what exactly is adventure travel? Although it sounds like a neat little summary of certain travel
experiences, it covers a wide range of activities. Think mountain trekking, bungee jumping, canoeing,
scuba diving, ziplining, sandboarding, snowboarding, and more. Anything that gets your heart pumping
harder than a walk in the park. It also includes overland travel on a bus or truck, urban exploration,
communing with nature through eco-friendly adventures, and participating in local festivals in foreign
countries.
Have you decided where you want to spend your next travel escapade? What are your top adventure
destinations? Instead of spinning a globe with your eyes closed and going wherever your index finger
lands, why not check out our list of the world’s most adventurous places to visit in 2018? Here are 10
best places to travel for adventure around the world!
The world’s most adventurous places to visit in 2018:
The land of smiles remains one of the top adventure travel destinations for backpackers and with good
reason t Thailand
oo! It’s got it all: white sand beaches, full moon parties, golden temples, misty mountains, elephants,
crazy nightlife, and crazy-delicious (and cheap!) street eats. Adventure seekers usually base themselves
in centrally-located Bangkok and take a train, bus, or motorbike to the best adventure destinations.
Meditate with the monks in Chiang Mai or get PADI certified in the turquoise ocean off many of the Thai
islands.
Australia
The world’s most adventurous places to visit in 2018:
If you’re heading to the land down under for the best places for adventure travel, remember to pack
your sunscreen! There are so many activities that make Oz one of the world’s top adventure
destinations. From the Outback to the Great Barrier Reef, Cape Tribulation to Uluru, there’s so much to
explore that you’ll never want to leave. Adventure seekers can surf, hike in the bush, feed (or eat!)
kangaroos, and even snowboard (yes, there’s powder in Straya). Don’t miss Cairns, adventure capital of
Australia for snorkeling, scuba diving, bungee jumping, or white water rafting

Pakistan: The Best Place for Adventure Travel that Makes People Go, “You’re going where!?”
I bet you weren’t expecting this to make the list of the best places for adventure travel holidays!
Yep, let’s talk Pakistan. And before we do, you’re gonna have to leave all your stigmas at the door (along
with your shoes, thank you very much)!
Pakistan is one of those places where you’re taking adventure tourism to the next level. It drops a lot of
the ‘tourism’ in the process. If your idea of the best adventure holiday is a lot of beautiful nature with a
lot of friendly, inquisitive people, it’s worth flying in the face of the status quo and travelling to Pakistan.
I mean, that’s the whole point of a travel adventure, right?
You’ll find a lot of trekking in Pakistan with something for everyone. If you’re an avid trekker, the
Karakoram range is magnificent and a true feat to experience. There are also more chill day hikes – and
then there’s the 18-day trek to the K2 base camp (the second-highest mountain in the world).

Honestly, the sheer, audacious beauty!
You can try going it solo to discover one of the most adventurous countries in the world all by your
lonesome. There is certainly some solitude and epic adventure waiting for you!
Even adventure travel is sometimes better shared though!
New Zealand: Adventure Travel With a Bit of Everything!
Time for something a little more standard but no-less downright gorgeous! The good thing about
adventure travel in New Zealand is that you’re getting a lot of bang for your buck. It’s like seven
countries in one neat little package.
Ice-capped mountains? Check. Petrified forests? Check. Prehistoric coastline? Check. Uninhabited
fjords? Check.
And that’s just found while road tripping the South Island!
New Zealand’s adventure tourism options have a flavour for everyone!
The Great Walks offer multiple levels of trekking from the well-worn Abel Tasman to the near-
undisturbed Stewart Island. Or, you know, you could just walk the entirety of New Zealand – I met a
dude that did it without shoes. That’s pretty metal.
Roys Peak Track, New Zealand
Some BADASS hiking awaits you in New Zealand.
But where do you go in New Zealand for the best overall adventure holiday? Easy one, man. You
backpack Queenstown: the go-to for adventure travel sports and activities in New Zealand.
You’ve got beautiful weather on the lake in the summer months. Then, come winter, all the snow bums
roll in for the powder season. A year-long travel adventure backpacking epicentre!
So what other adventure activities are there? It’s mega-famous for bungy jumping, ziplining, or you can
book a skydiving tour. Honestly, it’s one of the most beautiful places in the world to do it.
Oh, and if you get bored, beautiful, darling Wanaka is about an hour’s drive away
Nepal: Holy Mountains and a Booming Adventure Tourism Industry
The past decade has seen near-consistent growth in tourist arrivals to Nepal.
How come? Hmm, I can’t be certain but it may have something to do with the Himalayas… Nepal is the
‘roof of the world’ after all.
So what type of adventure tourism can you expect from Nepal? Well, again, it’s the Himalayan
Mountains… so… a lot of mountaineering. Mind you, this is the final-boss-level mountaineering I’m
talking about. The proper hardcore deal.
However, Mount Everest is full of garbage and Nepal is struggling to keep up with its tourism. We’ll
cover being a responsible tourist later on, but while we’re talking about Nepal, trek something other
than Mt Everest.
The Himilayan mountains seen from a tent
Wake up to a view like this and you’ll know why Nepal is so special.
You can disappear (safely) into the Annapurna range. This epic trekking loop strikes a nice balance
between being both culturally authentic and tourist accessible. But pick your timing right: outside peak
season but close to the cusp for the best of both worlds.
Alternatively, just pick a direction and start walking. The further out you get to where the whiteys don’t
go, the more spectacular and strange Nepal becomes. The chaos of India slowed down by the pace of
mountain life.
I’ve even heard whispers of a pristine ancient lake too; they say… Rara.
And then there is travelling Pokhara. Pokhara, in many ways, is like Queenstown. Only it’s slower, it’s
more chill, and you smoke hash instead of greenery.
There’s a lot of adventure tourism activities around Pokhara now (as the industry has grown). You can
learn to Paraglide, go trekking, and there’s some dope rafting around too.
Costa Rica: Adventure Travel that’s Pura Vida
Costa Rica – the birthplace of the zipline. So, now you know number one on your list of adventure
activities to do in Costa Rica.
Backpacking Costa Rica has got a lot to offer the adventure traveller: jungles, beaches, volcanoes. The
nature in Costa Rica is one of the reasons that Costa Rica has remained one of the world’s best places
for adventure travel for so long.
Earn to your travel photos
Its natural magnetism to travellers and ex-pats alike has made Costa Rica both a fantastic and varied
place to travel. It’s also caused its prices to rise and become one of the more expensive choices for
adventure holidays you can take while travelling Central America.
The trade-off? It’s the goddamn birthplace of the zipline, remember?
The famous Costa Rica Zipline and the birth of the canopy-surfing adventure tourism
The public transport in Costa Rica is fairly serviceable.

Picture this: you’re cruising along at a cool 70km/hr. Beneath you, the rippling greens of the jungle
canopy blur together. At the end of the line, a crew of trained squirrel monkeys await your arrival, a
chilled refresco and caramel flan in hand. Ok, I made that last bit up (but I’m a writer, don’t you know).
La Fortuna is your best destination for adventure tourism in Costa Rica. It’s a small town close to the
piercing Arenal Volcano (which is an absolutely magnificent creature). In the area, you’ll find hiking,
canyoning, rafting, and of course, the jungle zipline!
And, if you’re more of a beach person, head towards Costa Rica’s coast for snorkelling and scuba diving
action.
5 USA: The Adventure Travel MECCA
Heading north from Central America takes us to… North America. Yeah, that makes sense.
What will you find while exploring the USA?
A lot of flag-waving patriots who chase tornadoes and pull their own teeth out on account of the lack of
medical insurance. Anyway, other than that, you’ll find SO MUCH epic, adventure travel!
The big, bold, and beautiful US of A is chock full of adventurous places to visit.
Moab is one of the best places for adventure travel in the USA
The world-famous mountain biking of Moab, Utah.
So, where to travel for adventures in the USA? God, what do you like? Canyons, mountains, coasts, great
lakes, rivers, prairies… it’s all there.
Moab (Utah) takes the top pick as one of the best places for an adventure vacation in the USA. It is the
go-to for mountain biking with courses ranging from the beginner all the way up to the ‘holy shit, I might
die’. You’ll also find heaps of sweet rafting, ATV driving, horseback riding… it’s an adrenaline junkie’s
desert playground!
Yellowstone National Park (Wyoming) has hiking and hot springs. That’s a no brainer! Anywhere that has
hot springs is going to make for a top trip.
Colorado: home of the Rocky Mountains! What do you get there? Mate, were you not listening; I just
told you – the Rocky Mountains! Hikes, rock climbing, and legal bud; it may just be heaven-on-earth.
Yosemite National Park, California: is the impossible-to-not-mention choice. The undisputed king of the
USA’s national parks featuring the truly staggering peaks of free-soloing ‘What’s a rope?’ Alex Honnold

Why Go Backpacking in Argentina
Backpacking Argentina means you are in for a treat. Experience an incredible culture, beautiful beaches,
breathtaking waterfalls, and drink the best coffee or wine you’ve ever had. There’s a reason why
Argentina is so popular amongst travelers and especially backpackers. But don’t be fooled, the country is
huge and there are endless options for adventures. Whether you’re visiting for a short time or planning
a complete road trip, being prepared is the most important part of your travels. This Argentina Travel
Guide includes all of the tips and tricks that my team and I have gathered over the years. From budget-
friendly accommodations and adventures to insurance and safety, we’ve got everything covered.
Experience the beauty of the country and make the most out of your trip with the following Argentina
Travel Guide! Let’s get right to it… Why Go Backpacking in Argentina? Before you start your travels, be
sure to check out how big Argentina really is – the 8th largest country in the world. If you’re only
planning on visiting for a week, it is pretty much impossible to get around the whole country. Knowing
what you want to see and where you want to go will definitely make a difference in your Argentina
experience. g
Argentina is located in the Southern half of South America and has other popular neighboring countries
like Brazil, Chile, and Bolivia. The good news: Argentina is a lot cheaper than most of the other South
American countries and it’s offering just as many adventures, hotspots and things to explore.
If you tried to describe Argentina with a couple of words – it wouldn’t be possible. There are extremes
like humid rainforests, snowy mountains, tiny villages, and highly developed cities crashing into each
other, making it a dream for every backpacker.
Canada: Adventure Travel With a Dash of Solitude
Since we’re talking about vast, harsh, sparsely populated wildernesses, we should talk about Canada.
You’ve got a lot of chill places and cool cities in Canada (like Vancouver)… and then you head into the
great outdoors and oh wow!
It’s mega pretty.
What kind of extreme adventure vacations can you get up to in Canada? Well… that depends on how
extreme you’re willing to go.
For something fun but with a low chance of death, there’s skiing and snowboarding at a resort such as
Whistler. Hit the slopes and then get all the perks of a ski-town: loud parties and hordes of drunk
Australians. Don’t worry, we’ve got awesome hostel suggestions for budget adventurers too!
Oh, you wanted something with a high chance of death? Sorry, I misheard you. How about ice-climbing
UP A FROZEN WATERFALL! How’s that for an extreme adventure vacation? It’s your very own Tom
Cruise movie!
Visit one of Toronto’s many neighborhoods for a taste of some amazing culture and food, or ascend the
CN Tower to see the city in its entirety. Don’t forget to make a day trip out to Niagara Falls either!
After Toronto, make a quick pit stop in Ottawa for a healthy dose of history and politics. This is one of
the most pleasant and efficient cities in the world and makes for a great break from the bustling
metropolises.
Finally, drop by Montreal for a little slice of French culture and big ol’ heaping of nightlife. The parties in
this Euro-esque city are among the best in the world.
Explore Vancouver and the surrounding province of British Columbia, which are among the best places
in Canada! On this 10-day itinerary, you’ll go from sea to sky, visiting the stunning coast of Vancouver
Island to the snowy mountains around Whistler-Blackcomb.
Start by flying into the glittering city of Vancouver. Walk, bike or kayak around its many streets and
waterways and savor the magnificent urban scenery.
Take a ferry across the channel to see Victoria and Vancouver Island. Here are among the wildest and
most beautiful beaches in Canada, not to mention some awe-inspiring mountains and woods.
Head back to Vancouver and then drive up the Sea to Sky Highway all the way to Whistler. Passing
through and by the Howe Sound, Stawamus Chief, and Garibaldi Provincial Park, this is one of the best
drives in Canada. Stay in Whistler for a few days and hit the slopes followed by the rowdy local bars.
The Canadian Rockies are absolutel” breathtaking and hiking here is a must when planning a trip to
Canada. Start in either Calgary or Edmonton and make your way through the mountains, visiting both
Banff and Jasper National Parks in doing so.
Banff is the country’s premier outdoor destination. Here are some of the coolest places in Canada
including the likes of Lake O’Hara, The Great Divide, and Mount Assiniboine.
For a more intimate meeting with the mountains, head to Jasper, which receives far fewer tourists than
neighboring Banff. This park has some equally gorgeous spots though like Mt Robson, Maligne Lake, and
the Columbia Icefields.
Be sure to spend some time in Calgary as well as Edmonton as well. Both are very affluent cities with lots
of activities going on.
This is the ultimate backpacking itinerary for Canada! Over the course of a month, you’ll travel to
Canada’s top destinations including Nova Scotia and the vast Prairielands, in addition to all the locations
previously mentioned in the preceding itineraries. This itinerary is best done as a road trip – with your
own car you’ll have maximum freedom to see each attraction.
Begin the first leg of your road trip – from Vancouver to Calgary – navigating lush and crossing the epic
Rocky Mountains along the way. Dive down into the endless wheat fields of Saskatchewan and
Manitoba before reaching the urban megalopolises of Toronto and Montreal. End your trip on the wild
and rugged beaches of Nova Scotia and its capital city, Halifax. Here is a bastion of English tradition,
where the customs are wholly unique and definitely worth experiencing. Eat some seafood and learn
about the origins of Canada.
Places to Visit in Canada
Backpacking Vancouver
Nestled at the foot of the Coastal Range mountains of British Columbia, Vancouver is an absolute gem of
a city. Year after year, this glittering, ultra-modern metropolis ranks amongst the best cities to live in
both Canada and, for that matter, the entire world. Vancouver is gorgeous, brilliantly designed, offers
superlative dining experiences, and is chalked full of things to do.
Backpackers in Vancouver will probably notice first the dense and hyper-developed City Centre, which
appears both harmonious and somewhat claustrophobic at the same time; this is quintessential
Vancouver. The city’s planning – an effort to house as many residents in the center as possible – has
been so effective that it’s even given rise to its own term: vancouverism. Here is where most tourists
spend their time
The first places to visit in Vancouver are probably visiting picturesque Stanley Park and Coal Harbor.
Afterward, check out one of the many impressive galleries and/or museums scattered throughout the
city, like Science World or the Vancouver Art Gallery.
The best way to experience Vancouver is not so much by visiting individual sites but by just walking
around and being a part it. There are several pathways spread throughout the city that offer panoramic
views. Visiting one of the many parks, like Queen Elizabeth, Charleson, and English Bay, is a great way to
soak in the views.
Vancouver’s greatest asset is its proximity to some spectacular nature. Being so close to the mountains
means that there’s plenty of hiking to do. A walk across the Capilano Suspension Bridge, on the outskirts
of the city, is one of the most well-known attractions. In the winter, skiers/snowboarders will be spoiled
with slopes that are no more than 45 minutes away
#8 Mongolia: Adventure Travel With The OG Nomads
This is one of the best adventure holidays in Asia as far as I’m concerned. It’s a long-time dream of mine:
to ride a horse on the plains of Mongolia. I haven’t done it yet – timing is important – so I’m
recommending you to do it.
Why? Well, if you want to truly call yourself a nomad, then you gotta be a damn nomad! You need a
horse on the plateaus of Mongolia. You need to search for water for your travelling companion and
shoot at horse thieves with your bow.
I met a good dude in New Zealand. He’d never ridden a horse before and he was curious, so he went to
Mongolia and made his very own horseback adventure tour. Now that is bad-ass!
China: The Other Best Place for Adventure Travel that Makes People Say, “You went where!?”
Good ol’ communist China: the antithesis to the American Dream. It’s like going to another planet so, if
you can’t get ‘off the beaten track’ there, you’re probably doing something wrong. China is a hit with
backpackers in search of adventure!
You’ll almost always be mildly-to-noticeably uncomfortable which makes for some of the most
character-building adventure holidays for both single travellers and couples. It’s also a solid destination
choice for a cheap adventure holiday. It’s not as cheap as, say, Nepal, but it’s cheaper than most people
realise (especially if you’re camping in nature).
Mount Huashan is the top trips in China’s adventure tourism
Do it. What’s the worst that can happen?
So, what kind of adventure activities await in China? Well, trekking galore; I’ve heard the Great Wall is
kind of long and, yup, you can camp on it! Or you can visit Tiger Leaping Gorge or Mount Huashan which
is considered one of the most dangerous hiking trails in the world. Deadly hiking in China – now that’s an
extreme adventure vacation!
I mean, hell, just buy a bicycle and see how far you can get across the supreme landscape. It’s China,
you’re pretty much guaranteed an adventure no matter where you go!
China is an absolutely massive country with just about every environment imaginable. The country is full
of mega-cities, epic mountains, barren deserts, lush forests, and sandy beaches. When backpacking
China, you’re definitely spoiled for choices.
In a country so huge, it’s best to stick to a specific region if you’re strapped for time. You could spend an
entire lifetime exploring China and not see it all. Trust me – I lived there for 6 years and traveled
extensively, but still only scratched the surface.
Let’s start by acknowledging that one week in China definitely is not enough time to explore this
country. That being said, you can still hit some of the highlights of the country with just seven days.
You’ll want to fly into Beijing and spend a few days taking in the famous sights such as the Great Wall
and Forbidden City. Hop on an overnight train to save time and head to the historical city of Xi’an to see
the Terracotta Warriors.
From there, make a beeline for Chengdu to visit the giant panda reserve and eat the mouth-numbingly
spicy hot pot. You can catch a flight out of the country from Chengdu, most likely to Southeast Asia.
With ten days, you can follow the above itinerary (Beijing, Xi’an, and Chengdu) but add a visit to some of
Sichuan’s magnificent national parks. A short flight from Chengdu will get you to the dreamlike
Jiuzhaigou, where you can spend a day exploring the stunning landscapes and taking in the Tibetan
culture.
Pay a visit to Huanglong (Yellow Dragon) the next day to see the incredible terraces that are said to
resemble a dragon coming down the mountain.
Want to aford like travel place
If you have two weeks to spare in China, I highly recommend you spend a majority of your time in the
southwest part of the country. Yunnan province alone offers enough to fill two weeks. Start in the
provincial capital of Kunming, which is known as the Spring City for its pleasant weather.
The city is great, but you’ll want to venture out quickly to dedicate more time to places like Dali, Lijiang,
and Shangri-la. Spend your days cycling around massive lakes or trekking around snow-capped
mountains.
From Yunnan, you can catch a flight or overnight train to Guilin, the capital of Guangxi. A short bus ride
will take you to the backpacker haven of Yanghsuo, where you can cruise on a bamboo raft down the Li
River past majestic karst mountain peaks. There’s also cycling, hiking, and rock climbing on tap here, in
addition to some seriously wild nightlife.
Backpacking
So you have a whole month in China, do you? That’s great news, as you’ll be able to cover some serious
ground thanks to the country’s extensive rail network. Based on my experiences traveling all over the
country, I’d combine the above-mentioned itineraries and add a bit more.
In addition to Beijing, Xi’an, Sichuan, Yunnan, and Guangxi, you can tack on a backpacking trip to Hong
Kong, which is technically part of China but feels worlds apart. From here, you’ve got unlimited options
for onward travel.
You could also travel to Macau as well. That’s super close to Hong Kong and a whole other adventure.
While you can fill your days in Beijing by sticking to the well-trodden tourist path, there are lots of great
side adventures that you can add to make your trip a bit more interesting. Taking a bus for 1-2 hours in
any direction can lead you out of the urban sprawl and to some pretty incredible places.
You can go rafting and bungee jumping out at Shidu, hike up to a serene Buddhist temple in the
mountains, or hike on the wild Great Wall.
A major highlight of any visit to Beijing is indulging in the culinary and nightlife scenes. Beijingers know
how to eat, and they sure know how to party. Whether you’re sampling the legendary Beijing roast duck
or just eating weird shit on sticks at the Wangfujing night market, you’ll never go hungry in the ‘Jing.
If you’re looking to party, you’ve got several choices as well. With cheap drinks and good times abound
in the student haunt of Wudaokou, there are more bars than you can count in the trendy Sanlitun
district, or you can dance all night at the clubs around Worker’s Stadium. After a big night out, you can
even hit a 24-hour dim sum restaurant to soak up some of that booze.
Backpacking Yunnan
The name of this province in southwest China literally translates to “South of the Clouds,” and you’ll
quickly see why if you choose to visit Yunnan. Home to many stunning mountain ranges that literally
touch the clouds, it’s a very appropriate name. If you’re into adventure travel, nature, and unique local
culture, you’ve come to the right place.
Master Mentalism & Magic Tricks
Most trips to Yunnan will start and end in Kunming, a “small” city of 6 million. There’s enough to do here
to keep you busy for a few days, such as strolling around the central Green Lake Park, hiking in the
Western Hills, or visiting the quirky Bird & Flower Market.
Kunming is home to a sizeable expat population, and it’s one of your best bets if you’re thinking of
sticking around a while to teach English in China or study Chinese.
There’s a very established backpacker route through Yunnan that goes from Kunming to Dali, Lijiang, the
Tiger Leaping Gorge, and Shangri-la. This is far and away one of the most beautiful areas of China, full of
towering mountains and rushing rivers.
Forget those images you may have of giant cities full of traffic and smog. This is the reason backpacking
China is such an incredible experience.
While each of these towns can seem overwhelmingly crowded and touristy, rest assured that it’s never
that hard to escape. Chinese tourists tend to follow a herd mentality and stick to their tour bus.
Simply jump on a bicycle and start pedaling or skip the cable car and hike up that mountain and you’ll
find yourself in near solitude. Check out our comprehensive guide to backpacking Yunnan to plan an epic
trip to this corner of China.
Backpacking Sichuan
If you’ve ever eaten in a Chinese restaurant, you’ve probably had something labeled as Szechuan. That’s
the old spelling of this province that’s famous worldwide for its cuisine.
The common flavor here is known as ma la in Chinese, meaning “numb and spicy.” Set your taste buds
ablaze with classic Sichuanese dishes such as Kung Pao chicken, Mapo tofu, and of course, hot pot.
In the provincial capital of Chengdu, you can pay a visit to the massive giant panda base. This is far from
a zoo, as it’s a fully functioning research facility and conservation center. It’s best to visit early in the
morning when the cute and cuddly “bear cats” (the literal translation of their Chinese name) are
munching away on bamboo.
Chengdu is one of the coolest cities in China, so you might as well stick around a few days and explore.
The people here are known to be super laid-back and friendly. Head to the People’s Park to soak up the
local culture, which includes lots of tea sipping and group dancing. There are plenty of great hostels and
bars here, so you’ll meet lots of fellow backpackers during your stay.
Sichuan is home to some of China’s most famous national parks. Jiuzhaigou is one of most picturesque
places in the country, with turquoise lakes, epic mountain peaks, and massive waterfalls. Those looking
for a serious adventure here will want to sign up for an eco-tourism trek in the nearby Zharu Valley. On
this 3-day trip, you’ll reach the summit of a sacred Tibetan mountain at 4,200 meters. It’s one of the
most challenging and rewarding adventures I’ve ever had in China and something I’d highly recommend.
Backpacking Guangxi
When it comes to backpacking China, it’s hard to beat the town of Yangshuo. Just a few decades ago,
this was a sleepy rural Chinese town with little to no tourism infrastructure. When long-haired
backpackers started showing up looking to scale the town’s beautiful karst mountains, a new industry
was born.
Yangshuo is now one of the most popular backpacker destinations in the country, with a ton of hostels,
restaurants, bars, and travel agents. It has also become a hot spot for domestic tourists, who flock here
by the tour bus-load to crowd the West Street. Don’t be discouraged, though, as once again it’s very
easy to escape the crowds. Just rent a bicycle or a motorbike, and you’ll find yourself out in some of the
most unreal landscapes you’ve ever seen without a tour group in sight.
Another spot worth visiting is the area known as the Longji Rice Terraces. The name means “Dragon’s
Backbone,” as the terraced rice paddies are said to resemble exactly that. Unfortunately, they decided
to put a hideous cable car in here. Chinese tourists tend to be lazy and avoid hiking at all costs, so it’s
not surprising. Despite this eyesore, it’s still a great place for a few days of casual hiking.
Backpacking Shaanxi
Shaanxi Province is home to one of the most famous sights in all of China – the Terracotta Warriors. As a
matter of fact, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is said to be the most impressive archaeological
discovery of the 20th
century. This is the mausoleum of Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of a unified
China. As with many things in China, there’s a fascinating story behind it.
Qin Shi Huang survived three assassination attempts and was justifiably fearing for his life. The emperor
became obsessed with finding an “elixir of life” in search of immortality. He also had a gigantic
mausoleum constructed and had it surrounded by thousands of life-like statues of warriors and chariots
to protect him in the afterlife. This was later discovered by workers who were digging a well in 1974, and
it quickly drew international attention. To visit the Terracotta Warriors, you’ll want to base yourself in
the provincial capital of Xi’an. Set aside a day to explore the impressive site, and at least 1-2 more to
see what Xi’an has to offer. Here you can rent a bicycle and ride around the entire length of the ancient
City Wall.
Be sure to visit the Muslim Quarter in the evening, where you can find tons of delicious street food.
Xi’an is famous for a few dishes, such as the yang rou pao mo lamb stew and rou jia mo, which are
basically Chinese pulled pork sandwiches.
Backpacking China is all about adventure, and that’s precisely what you’ll find at Mt. Huashan.
Proclaimed to be “the world’s most dangerous hike,” this one isn’t for the faint of heart.
Here you’ll walk along narrow pathways with precipitous drops off to the side. You’re strapped in for
safety, but that doesn’t make it any less terrifying. If you survive, you’ll be able to say you conquered
one of the Five Great Mountains in China.
Getting Off the Beaten Path in China
Those looking to skip out on matching hat-wearing, flag-following, selfie-snapping hordes of Chinese
tourists will want to head straight for northwest China. Perhaps no place in China is more off the beaten
path than the autonomous region of Xinjiang.
The area is home to numerous ethnic groups, including Uygurs, Kazakhs, and Mongols. It’s been the
sight of some serious unrest in recent years, meaning most tourists stay far away.
While many in China will try to convince you that Xinjiang is far too dangerous, you just need to exercise
some caution and patience and you can have a perfectly fine trip here. In addition to some of the most
mesmerizing landscapes in the country, Xinjiang also has some of the most delicious food in all of China.
It’s pretty hard to beat some spicy grilled lamb with a nice piece of naan. Despite their bad reputation
across China, the Uyghur people are known to be incredibly hospitable and welcoming to visitors (unless
you’re Han Chinese, that is).
While we’re talking about lesser-visited parts of China, we can’t leave out Inner Mongolia. If you can’t
make it to actual Mongolia, this is a pretty decent backup. You can still sleep in a yurt in the desert and
then go horseback riding in the seemingly endless grasslands. All of this can easily be arranged from one
of the hostels in the capital of Hohot.
Another great spot for some off the beaten path adventures is Qinghai Province. This is one of the most
sparsely populated regions of China, meaning you won’t have to share the stunning landscapes with a
bunch of tourists. Here you can soak up the Tibetan culture without the added hassle of traveling to
Tibet. You can also visit the largest lake in all of China.
It should be noted that by just being in China, you’re already sort of off the beaten path. Sure, the
country gets a whole bunch of international visitors every year, but you’re still very much a novelty here.
Even in the big cities of Beijing and Shanghai, don’t be surprised to hear people shout “Laowai!
(Foreigner!)” and point at you. They might even try to take a picture with you. Such is life when you’re
traveling in China. Even though the country has been open for several decades, foreigners are still
surprising to most locals.
Zimbabwe: Adventure Travel With a Touch of Sun and Crocodiles
There’s three more entries on our list and three more continents to explore. Let’s make a shift over to
Africa now… to Zimbabwe! Africa is one hell of a trip that will always make you laugh!
If we’re talking Zimbabwe adventures, we’re talking Victoria Falls. Oh, the falls? They’re drop-dead
breathtakingly ‘life is beautiful’ gorgeous. Absolutely stunning.Victoria Falls has built itself up as the best
adventure holiday destination in Africa. You’ll find a huge scope of adventure activities in Victoria Falls
including bungy-jumping, gorge-swinging, flying foxes, rapid rafting (I’m talking those infamous grade V
and VI options), and cage diving with crocodiles. Diving with crocs… it’s an adrenaline junkie’s paradise!
It’s also warm – with swimming involved! It’s a nice change of pace from the freezing-cold murderous
wildernesses I keep sending you to (just wait for the last two entries on this list, muahahaha)!
And since you’re in Zimbabwe (and how often do you end up over that way, realistically) maybe explore
the rest of the country. Victoria Falls is surrounded by gorgeous national parks and there are plenty of
adventure safari tours to partake in.
For many of the places in the world I travel to, drinking the water from the tap or a side-stream on a
forest trail is an almost guaranteed ticket (one-way with no plans) to the toilet bowl. The only practical
previous option I had whilst traveling was to buy plastic bottles. My soul hurt every single time I bought
plastic, but hell, we all have to drink water, right? At least then I knew I would not be having some
diabolical form of Montezuma’s revenge careening through my digestive track.
Once I had a GEOPRESS in my gear kit, it was pretty much game over for the plastic BS from there. No
more plastic bottles and no more fear of parasite-ridden water. The best of both worlds.
On my last trip to Pakistan, I was able to easily filter water from my hotel sink in Lahore before I also
sipped on filtered and icy cold glacier water from the Himalaya and Karakoram. That beats the hell out
of table water any day.
But how does it all work? Is it actually a functional filter water bottle? Let’s dive in and find out…

Antarctica: The Final Boss of Your Adventure Travels
I said we were going to all seven continents, right? I also said adventure is best served cold.
Yes, you can do adventure travel in Antarctica. Yes, it is more expensive than anything else on this list
and no you can’t go unguided unless you break away from your tour group (NOT a good idea). This is
about the most extreme adventure trip you can take until Elon Musk sorts out that whole space/moon
tourism thing. But, let’s be real, do we really want him to?
Antarctica rounds of 7 continents of best places for adventure travel
Some Antarctic nomads chilling out.
Most Antarctica tours involve a cruise and will take you to and around parts of the continent – usually,
the Antarctic peninsula which is pretty damn close to Argentina (hence the ‘land at the end of the world’
thing). Some of them will also take you to the Falkland Islands which are super damn pretty.
Now, you could always shore up your boat life skills and test the hell out of yourself and your crew by
sailing there…
Either way, you can expect a lot of wildlife watching as well as some adventure activities alongside such
as kayaking, scuba diving, and paddle-boarding. Notice how all those activities had some relation to the
freezing-cold water…
Yep, that’s what to expect from Antarctica: desolation, magnificence, and feeling permanently cold all
the time. But hot damn if she’s not gorgeous.

Brazil
Occupying half of South America’s land mass, Brazil is the giant of the continent – both in size and in
population. Brazil’s history is filled with economic turmoil, veering from boom to bust, and its culture is
a melting pot that has traditionally welcomed the world.
Brazil is one of the world’s top tourist destinations. However, the country in the 21st
century confronts
serious questions touching on poverty, inequality, governance and the environment.
Brazil gained independence from Portugal in the early 19th
century, and its government evolved from
monarchy to military dictatorship to civilian rule. Today, Brazil is a democratic federal republic.
Rich with natural resources, Brazil’s economy is active in the agricultural, manufacturing, mining and
service sectors. The nation is a top producer in coffee production. Brazil’s economy grew rapidly during
the first decade of the 21st
century, and it now has one of the world’s largest economies in terms of
gross domestic product, according to the International Monetary Fund.
The boom has faced a slowdown in recent years, which in turn has triggered growing public anger over
longstanding issues of poverty and allegations of corruption cutting across the nation’s social, economic
and political institutions. Brazilian studies estimate that corruption annually costs the country billions of
dollars and the issue figures to be prominent in the country’s general elections in 2018.

Brazil’s culture draws from Portuguese, indigenous and African influences. Its music merges European
and African elements. The sports-crazy nation loves football – soccer to a North American and Australian
audience – as well as volleyball.
The scale of Brazil’s landscape is massive. Its coastline with the Atlantic Ocean stretches for more than
4,600 miles. The Amazon River is the world’s second longest. It is considered to have the greatest variety
of plants, mammals and fish of any nation in the world, thanks to the sprawling Amazon rainforest.
Brazil is a founding member of the United Nations, and is an active member of major international and

Greece
Located in southeastern Europe, Greece as an independent nation is young, existing since the 19th
century. Its civilization, however, is one of history’s oldest and most influential, credited with creating
the concept of democracy as well as the ancient Olympic Games, and laying Western foundations in
science, the arts and philosophy.
Greece occupies the southernmost part of Europe’s Balkan Peninsula, as well as a collection of islands
that dot the Aegean, Ionian and Mediterranean seas. Its landscapes of mountains, hills and coastline and
its rich cultural heritage make it one of the most visited countries in the world.
Greece broke away from the Ottoman Empire and declared independence in the early 19th
century. A
referendum in 1974 abolished the monarchy and created the parliamentary republic that exists today.
The country has a free-market economy with some government involvement. Fueled by the tourism
industry, services comprise the largest economic sector in the country, both for employment and
contribution to the Greek gross domestic product. Shipping, industrial production and agriculture are
other significant sectors of the economy.

Following the global financial crisis, Greece went into recession in 2009. The global economic downturn
exposed years of government deficit spending in the country, and the International Monetary Fund and
eurozone governments have provided aid packages that are tied to sharp austerity programs for the
Greek government.
The ongoing Greek debt crisis raises questions about the futures of the eurozone, the European Union
and of the Greek people, who face years of living under austerity measures. Within the European Union,
Greece has one of the highest unemployment rates – particularly for young adults – as well as an
alarming risk of poverty for its citizens. The nation has also become a major crossroads for migrants,
though many have faced border closures and deteriorating conditions at camps.
Greek culture has forged distinctive identities in science, the arts, social sciences and cuisine. Greece
gave birth to drama and the theatre, as well as disciplines such as political science. Greek Orthodoxy is
the dominant religion, but religious tolerance is encoded in the country’s constitution.
Greece is a member of major international and regional organizations, including the United Nations, the
European Union, NATO, the World Trade Organization and the International Monetary Fund.

America is full of great sights and places to visit, but it’s the Statue of Liberty that represents the United
States like no other place. This symbol of freedom in New York City was gifted by the French to the
American people in 1896.
Of all the attractions in New York City, this is one every tourist must see. The best thing to do at the
Statue of Liberty is to take a ride up to her crown and soak up the view over the city. Access to the

Machu Picchu, Peru
Machu Picchu

If you are planning to see only one attraction in South America, this is the place to come. The ancient
Inca city of Machu Picchu is arguably the most impressive ruined city in the world.
Much of the attraction comes from its location, high in the jungle-clad mountains of Peru. Set on a high
plateau with soaring green mountains, the setting is surreal. The sheer tenacity of the original builders
to create this amazing place in what would have been impenetrable jungle, is, in itself, impressive.
Visitor numbers are now limited to a maximum per day, so the experience has been greatly enhanced

Perched above present day Athens, the Acropolis draws you up and in. Follow in the footsteps of
ancients as you walk up the same steps that have been walked on since 438 BC — 2,500 years.
Views out over the city are incredible as you walk between the meticulously restored ancient buildings.
Near the end of the day, you’ll want to linger and watch the sunset from the stairs near the entrance.
This is a nightly ritual in Athens.

The Taj Mahal, Agra
The Taj Mahal, Agra
The Taj Mahal, Agra
Perhaps India’s most recognizable building, the Taj Mahal is also the world’s most famous testimony to
the power of love. Named after Mumtaz Mahal, the favorite wife of Emperor Shah Jahan, this most
beautiful of mausoleums was begun upon her death in 1631 and took 20,000 workmen until 1648 to
complete.
Incorporating many elements of Islamic design including arches, minarets, an onion-shaped dome, and
black calligraphy inlaid around the entrance, the Taj Mahal is largely constructed of white marble.
Adding to its splendor are delicate inlaid floral patterns and precious and semi-precious stones such as
jade, lapis lazuli, diamonds, and mother of pearl.
The best time to visit is either at dawn or dusk when the atmosphere is brilliantly altered by the change
in lighting. If possible, try to catch a view of the Taj Mahal’s reflection from the far bank of the Yamuna
River-it makes for a memorable (and safe) selfie.
The Holy City of Varanasi
The Holy City of Varanasi
The Holy City of Varanasi
Dating back to the 8th
century BC, Varanasi is one of the oldest still inhabited cities in the world. A major
pilgrimage center for Hindus, this holy city has long been associated with the mighty Ganges River, one
of the faith’s most important religious symbols.
Varanasi offers many reasons to visit, not least of them the chance to explore the Old Quarter adjacent
to the Ganges where you’ll find the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, built in 1780. The New Vishwanath
Temple with its seven separate temples is also of interest.
Bathing in the Ganges is of great importance to Hindus, and numerous locations known as “ghats”
feature stairways leading to the water where the faithful bathe before prayers. The largest are
Dasashvamedh Ghat and Assi Ghat. The latter, at the confluence of the Ganges and Asi rivers, is
considered particularly holy.

Founded in 1577 by Ram Das, Amritsar is an important hub of Sikh history and culture. The main
attraction here is Harmandir Sahib, opened in 1604 and still often referred to as the Golden Temple for
its beautiful gold decoration.
The holiest of India’s many Sikh shrines (it also attracts many Hindus and people of other faiths), the
temple was built in a blend of Hindu and Islamic styles. Its lower marble section features such flourishes
as ornate inlaid floral and animal motifs, while the large golden dome represents a lotus flower, a
symbol of purity to Sikhs.

In addition to its splendid design, visitors are equally impressed with the temple’s spiritual atmosphere,
an effect enhanced by the prayers continuously chanted from the Sikh holy book and broadcast
throughout the complex.
Part of the overall experience – and visitors are welcome to participate – is the chance to enjoy one of
the 50,000 free meals the attraction serves up to visitors each and every day.

miniature paintings, sculptures, palm-leaf manuscripts, and local history exhibits
The Golden City: Jaisalmer
The Golden City: Jaisalmer
The Golden City: Jaisalmer
So named for the yellow sandstone used in most of its buildings, the Golden City of Jaisalmer is an oasis
of splendid old architecture that rises from the sand dunes of the Thar Desert. Once a strategic outpost,
today the city is filled with splendid old mansions; magnificent gateways; and the massive Jaisalmer Fort,
also known as the Golden Fort, a daunting 12th
-century structure that rises high above the town.
In addition to its palaces, temples, and fine old homes, the fortress boasts 99 bastions along with
massive gates leading to its main courtyard where you’ll find the seven-story-tall Maharaja’s Palace.
Started in the early 1500s and added to by successive rulers right up until the 19th
century, the palace
offers sections open to the public, including areas beautifully decorated with tiles from Italy and China,
and intricately carved stone doors.
There are also a number of Jain temples dating from the 12th
to 16th
centuries, each decorated with fine
marble and sandstone images, palm-leaf manuscripts, and brightly painted ceilings. Be sure to also
check out the well-preserved 1,000-year-old library, Gyan Bhandar, with its many 16th

Mumbai: The Gateway of India
The Gateway of India, Mumbai
The Gateway of India, Mumbai
Standing an impressive 26 meters tall and overlooking the Arabian Sea, the iconic Gateway of India is a
must-see when in Mumbai. Built to commemorate the arrival of King George V and his wife Queen Mary
in 1911, this stunning piece of architecture was opened with much pomp and ceremony in 1924 and
was, for a while, the tallest structure in the city.
Constructed entirely of yellow basalt and concrete and notable for its Indo-Saracenic design, the
Gateway of India was also the scene of a rather less jubilant procession of British soldiers in 1948 when
India gained its independence. These days, the huge archway provides a stunning backdrop that is as
popular among locals as it is tourists.
Hot Tip: After visiting the Gateway of India, pop over to the adjacent Taj Mahal Palace and Tower for a
delectable High Tea, a fun thing to do in Mumbai since this lovely luxury hotel opened in 1903.

(Diwan-i-Am) with its finely decorated walls and terraces frequented by monkeys.

used to carry cooling water, and the Temple of Victory (Jai Mandir), notable for its many decorative

Just above Amer Fort is Jaigarh Fort, built in 1726 by Jai Singh and featuring tall lookout towers,
formidable walls, and the world’s largest wheeled cannon. Be sure to also spend time wandering the

Periyar National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary, Madurai
One of South India’s most popular tourist attractions, Periyar National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary is
centered around a lake built by British engineers in 1895 for irrigation and to provide water to the city of
Madurai.
Established in 1934, this beautiful park is home to numerous species of mammals, including a large free-
roaming Indian elephant population, wild boar, otters, the lion-tailed macaque, and more than 20
Bengal tigers. Bird-watching is a popular activity with frequent sightings of species such as darters,
storks, kingfishers, hornbills, and racket-tailed drongos, along with many interesting varieties of
butterflies.
The best ways to enjoy the park’s splendid mountain scenery are to take a lake cruise or guided jungle
walk, the latter allowing visitors a chance to come face to face with elephant herds and observe other
wildlife from watchtowers and viewing platforms.
Agra Fort
Agra Fort
Agra Fort
Built as a military structure in 1565 by Emperor Akbar with later additions by Shah Jahan, the stunning
Agra Fort (also known as Agra’s Red Fort) is an interesting mix of both Hindu and Muslim influences.
Located a little more than two kilometers from the Taj Mahal, the fort is entered through Amar Singh
Gate with its low outer wall and dogleg design built to confuse attackers. Once inside, you’ll see two
large interlinked sandstone buildings, Akbari Mahal and Jahangiri Mahal, the largest private residence in
the complex.
Other highlights include the Khas Mahal (Private Palace), with its splendid copper roof, and the Anguri
Bagh (Grape Garden), a jigsaw-patterned Mughal garden with numerous wonderful fountains and water
channels as well as screens that once offered a private area for the emperor and his entourage. Also of
note is the octagonal Mossman Burj tower, which later served as Shah Jahan’s prison until his death.

Major ‘key’ factors for tourist attraction
Nectar for sacred belief
Vishnu Devi Temple is one of the major ‘turn-key’ factor for driving the religious tourists from all over
India. Earlier, before 1989’s insurgency, tourism contributed a major portion of Kashmir’s economy. But,
after that tourism was a worst hit for all.
Whether you are a profane or a sacred believer of God, this place is a hotspot for everyone.
But, before you go you must believe the sacred presence of mother ‘Vaishno Devi’ from the innate core
of your soul and then start your journey to the temple.
Climbing the steep steps is not that easy when you are climbing the stairs. Every year thousands of
tourists come here to touch the holy feet of Vaishno devi to fulfil their unsatisfied desire.
It is a belief that whoever comes here never goes back without getting their wish fulfilled. “Mata’’
(Mother) Vashno devi fulfils their every desire.
That’s what drag even foreign devotees to this place to visit Amarnath in January, where the famous
Vaishno Devi Temple is located.
Speciality of this attraction
The speciality of it is, you can see people from all community, irrespective to their age is walking and
climbing the huge 13.5 km path. While going through this long journey for long more than 3 to 4 hours
journey by foot, you might hear devotees yelling ‘Jai Mata Di’. That’s the spirit of those who come here
to visit Vaishno Devi for once in their lifetime.
Shikara ride
Did you ever enjoy a boat ride? Well, I am not talking about any ordinary boat ride on Thames or on
Hudson Bay.
I am talking about a semi frozen lake with budding lotus flower everywhere and you are taking a
peaceful tranquil ride with a cup of coffee on your hand. The smoke evoking from the cup is creating a
smoggy atmosphere in the ‘Shikara’ and you can see people slowly riding near you with green apples,
fruits and apricots, ripened enough to gulp it inside.
That’s what people usually do whenever they come to Kashmir. It is a common phenomenon on Dal
Lake. Most of the shikaras available here are meant for tourist purpose.
How to hire them
All you have to do is, find a boatman and hire it for one night or two nights. That include of course two
meals a day as well as the breakfast. The charges won’t be much. It might cost around 2500/- to 3500/-
INR. The charges vary when it is a peak tourist season. If you are choosing this place to visit in the month
of January, the price varies for sure.
Sonmarg
Known for its exotic beauty and amazing greenery, Sonmarg is a prime location for every international
tourists. Whether it is the green apple or the snow-clad mountains that is driving you here, visiting
Sonmarg during the winter season is a priceless memory.
Recently an initiative has been taken by the Govt. Of India to promote tourism in this place. An ample of
winter sports like skiing and various other entertainment has been organised to promote tourism in
Sonmarg.
Low per head cost
Per head cost of any place that you plan to visit in Sonmarg during the month of January is never going
to be a burden for your budget. So, stop wrinkling your eyebrows.
Per head Meal: 500/- INR {lunch & dinner excluding breakfast}.
Per head Lodging: 1500/- to 2500/-, for basic accommodation, i.e. one room with attached bathroom.
However, the prices may vary depending upon the accommodation and facility you are taking. The
prices might go a bit high if you need any luxury accommodation.
Other attractions
Jammu is famous for other attractions as well. They include Bhau Fort and Baghee Bahu.
Though prior to insurgency now the tourist visit has decreased in Jammu and Kashmir, but still people
come here in search of peace.
If you are coming here with your kids or your dating partner don’t forget to visit Gulmarg. There are
ample of winter sports available in this place to attract the tourists.
If you are thinking for skiing, do drop in.
Nothing can be more romantic than Gulmarg if you are planning to visit in the month of January.
We all lead a life where everyone rushes for materialistic expansion. Nobody has got time to sit and
think for a while how melodious and mystique nature is in Jammu and Kashmir. Here, a rambling
‘musafir’ (traveller) can spend the whole life, basking in this enthralling beauty of Kashmir.
Myth says that when Rama verged war against Ravana he got stuck to see the beauty of ‘Pampa’ river. A
lone wanderer is definitely going to get his or her knees completely numb the moment the person
witnesses flamboyant Lidar River passing through the Kashmir valley.

Hunza Valley - Northern Pakistan
Lord Curzon, a former viceroy, said, “The little state of Hunza contains more summits of over 20,000 feet
than there are of over 10,000 feet in the entire Alps.” Visitors to Hunza are deeply overwhelmed by the
rugged charm and the fragrant breeze singing through graceful trees and the lushious green attractively
carpeted fields all set against a background of snow-covered mountains. Situated at an elevation of
2,438 metres, Hunza Valley’s tourist season peaks from May to October. The temperature in May is 27 C
maximum and 14 C minimum. While the October temperatures range from: 10 C maximum to 0 C
minimum. Glaciers abound in this valley, including the 30-mile long Batura and the immense Virjerab
and Hispar glaciers.
The Nubra, Braldu, Hushe and Saltoro rivers are born in the glacier-laced Karakorum; the Shyok River
encircles the eastern flanks of the range; but only the Hunza River actually cuts from north to south
completely through the Karakorum Range. The Hunza River has its origin in name at the juncture of the
Kilik and Khunjerab nalas, some 100 miles from the river’s mouth near Gilgit. Carving a gorge between
25,000-foot peaks and receiving the waters of scores of glaciers, this is by far the largest and the
grandest tributory of the Gilgit River watershed. Most parts of Hunza offer an awe-inspiring view of
Rakaposhi (7,788 metres). The snows of Rakaposhi glitter in the moonlight, producing an atmosphere of
ethereal magnetism. The fairy-tale like castle of Baltit, just above Karimabad, is a Hunza landmark built
about 600 years ago. Stilted on massive legs, its wooden bay windows look out over the valley.
Originally, this was used as the residence of the Mirs (the title of the former rules) of Hunza.
REGION OF HUNZA..
The Hunza Valley is composed of “Hunza Proper” (as Hunzakuts call it) in the midvalley, while the larger
upper valley region is called Gujal and is populated by the Wakhi-speaking ethnic Wakhi. Nagar, another
former state, is located in two areas, and you will visit its narrow glaciated canyons as you proceed up
the valley. The Nagarwals speak Burushaski with their own accent. Practice your Burushaski, with those
you meet; people will enjoy it, and you may be asked in for tea. Burushaski is a complex language with
four genders, and it is a “language isolate,” unrelated to any other tongue. The famous Hunza water
(famous for long life and youth) is locally called “mel”. Four clans live in Hunza, and each is said to have
originally come from a different region: Dramatin from Tartary, Barataling from Russia, Kurukutz from
Persia, and Broung from kashmir. The 6-mile long fertile oasis beginning at Hassanabad contains small
villages among terraced fields and is the center of the former state. Not far beyond Aliabad a link road
branches uphill to the north of the KKH (Karakorum Highway)and is the direct way to Karimabad and
Baltit (65 miles from Gilgit and ranging 500 feet up and down the hill at roughly 7,800 feet in elevation).
Because of their inns and their spectacular location overlooking Rakaposhi and the green fields of Hunza
and nagar, these two towns, Kareemabad in particular, function as the focus of Hunza for most visitors.
HISTORY OF HUNZA..
Just beyond ‘Ganesh Village’ below Kareemabad, the KKH (Karakorum Highway) crosses the Hunza river
on a large, graceful bridge. Within walking distance from the bridge right on the roadside is ‘Haldikish’
(Place of the Rams), also known as the “Sacred Rock” of Hunza. This large rock has many carvings from
different eras and in varying scripts. At Shiskot the KKH crosses the west side of the river and soon
reaches Gulmit (about 8,000 feet). Gulmit has a couple of lodges and the town in itself, is an attractive
one to visit. Just above the lodges is the Hunza Cultural Museum. Hunza is an ideal place for
mountaineering, trekking and hiking. Every area in the Hunza Valley up to, but not including , Chapursan
is officially considered an openzone, even the dicey Hispar Glacier. Most treks in this valley are’nt
particularly long ones but there are exceptions; the Hispar-Biafo walk and the hike to Shimshal are
among such exceptions. Hunza genuinely offers an experience of a lifetime!

Travel in South Africa - Visit the Free State
With the world cup shining the spotlight on South Africa local tourism is getting the kick start it
desperately needs. While the major centers like Cape Town and Johannesburg already popular with
tourists, it’s the smaller venues that are getting some much deserved attention. This is a very diverse
country and he diversity is in much more than just its people. The Free State is probably the least
“famous” province in South Africa but it is arguably the most authentic.
Known for its vast open spaces, it’s a province that is dominated by farming communities and old South
African charm. With Bloemfontein as the biggest city, the majority of the Free State is untouched by
major development you can drive for hours through the long roads and see nothing but the odd sheep
here and there.
What makes the Free State so special is that it is unlike any other place in the world. Local Farm shops in
small towns selling traditional food and craft is more than just charming – its an experience. Small artist
communities like the one in Clarens is like stepping into a new universe while the scenic beauty of the
Golden Gate mountain range allows you to explore the magnificent natural beauty.
The best way to explore the stunning natural beauty of the province Is by car. Flights from Johannesburg
land every 3 hours in Bloemfontein and you can pick up a car at the airport. Hotels are scarce, but it’s
the best part. Guesthouses and Bed And Breakfasts is the way to go and many farms allow guests which
is a great way to see authentic South African living in a province known for its old school charm.
The Northern Cape is the largest of South Africa’s provinces and the most sparsely populated. Despite
this, the Northern Cape has plenty to offer visitors, whether their interests lie in the origins of the
diamond industry, the Anglo-Boer War, wildlife, the brilliant spring flowers of Namaqualand, canoeing
on the mighty Orange River or enjoying the clear skies and open spaces of the Hantam and Upper Karoo.
CLIMATE: The Northern Cape experiences a diverse range of climatic conditions because of the
respective regions and altitudes. The Northern Cape enjoys a summer rainfall, but this is infrequent. The
summer months have long, hot summer days and cool evenings. Winter days are moderate, but the
nights are very cold with temperatures often dropping below zero. Snow in winter and heavy frost falls
at night are common.
SHOPPING: There are many shopping malls, arts and craft shops, and many ethic vendors on the
beachfront. Good buys include mohair products such as jerseys, rugs and blankets; the famous Karoo
Lamb, dried fruit, diamonds, jewellery and gems.
TOP TEN ATTRACTIONS:
The Diamond Field:
This area is known as the prairie country of Southern Africa, with sun-drenched plains, covered in grass
and acacia thorn trees. To the geologists this is a bewildering delight, and for the tourist the “Diamond
Way” is an exciting journey, taking one back in time.
Kimberley:
Today the city is a prosperous, thriving metropolis worthy of the title, “the Diamond Capital Of The
World”. The city is geared for tourists, with plenty to offer in terms of accommodation, restaurants,
shopping malls and attractions. See a replica of the town during the greatest diamond rush the world
has ever seen, as well as ‘Eureka’ – the world’s first recorded diamond discovery at the Big Hole and
Kimberley Mine museum.
Groenriviersmond:
The seaside estuary of Groenriviersmond (Green River Mouth) lies Southwest of Garies and offers
excellent fishing and crayfish diving opportunities.
Namaqualand:
Spring time sees this region transformed from a desert landscape into a carpet of colourful wild flowers,
attracting many visitors. Also an adventure tourist’s playground, the region offers hiking, canoeing and
4x4 trails. The coastline is popular with fishermen and hosts a booming crayfish industry. Diamonds are
also mined from the sea and copper is mined too. The world-famous Richtersveld National Park is found
in this region.
Hantam Karoo:
Millions of years ago, this area was an inland sea and over time it has transformed into an arid and
rugged landscape with wide open plains and mountains. This region is renowned by astronomers for its
remarkable night skies and is home to the South African Astronomical Observatory. The region is also
known for its spring wild flowers, and is home to the rare Sterboom.
Kgalagadi Transfrontier National Park:
Africa’s first transfrontier park, Kgalagadi “land of thirst” is shared with and crosses the border into
Botswana to facilitate the migration of wildlife and the movement of free-roaming predators; red sand
dunes, sparse vegetation and dry riverbeds of the Nossob and Auob ensure excellent opportunities for
game viewing and photography. Fifty-eight species of mammal and more than 400 plant species share
the desert and dry savannah, while approx. 260 species of bird, including at least 20 species of large
raptor share the sky.
Richtersveld National Park:
Southern Africa’s largest mountain desert park, the Richtersveld is 160 000ha of lava mountains and
sandy plains situated in the north-western crook of the Orange River. It is also one of the world’s most
precious and fragile eco-systems. Its strange rock formations shaped and sculpted by the wind and sun,
is a land for those keen to ‘rough it’. Visitors can explore the area from the comfort of a 4x4 or by
paddling long stretches of the river.
Green Kalahari:
Dominating this region are the lush vineyards and the massive Orange River, which meanders through a
giant valley. The Kalahari Gemsbok National Park and the Augrabies Falls National Park – with its famous
Black Rhino Aventure, are not to be missed.
Travel cheapest budget-check out
Augrabies Falls National Park:
The Augrabies Falls, which is one of the five biggest waterfalls in the world, plunges a sheer 56m into a
rolling, turbulent maelstrom of foam, mist and rainbows said to contain untold diamond wealth and a
river monster. This is where the black rhino can be found and visitors can also go on game drives.
Kalahari:
The sun-drenched Kalahari, with its ancient, undulating landscape and endless horizons, evoke
memories of a land before time. This region is home to “The Eye” a permanent and abundant source of
daily water. Hunting in the area is popular and the Kalahari is home to over 40 raptors and vulture
species and 7 owl species.
South Africa is a land of contrasts, with first world city areas contrasted by wild wilderness areas, and
suburbia contrasted by huge tracts of land where only wild animals live.
The Drakensberg Mountains are a range of mountains formed by the bottom end of the African rift
valley, with peaks rising to 3600 metres. There are many hiking trails which go up these mountains, with
overnight huts and caves at intervals along the trails. The weather up there can change in a matter of
minutes, with heavy snow, and many hikers have had to be airlifted out by air force choppers, so one
needs to choose one’s season carefully. The scenery, however, is stunning.
Down on the East coast of South Africa is the Storms river bridge, one of the highest concrete arch
bridges in Africa, and there is a permanent bungee jumping installation there. You fall a long way before
the rope starts slowing you down!
There are quite a number of old steam locomotives that are still pulling trains around scenic parts of the
coast and midlands. They are run for tourists, and booking is essential. The steam trains are run by clubs
of enthusiasts, and are kept in shiny condition. If you like the smell of coal smoke and grit in your eyes,
this is for you!
The Kruger National Park is a very large game park at the North Eastern corner of South Africa,
bordering on Mozambique. It will take you more than a day to drive through this park from South to
North, but it is better to spend at least 4 to 5 days there in order to see all the game. The big 5 are all
there – Lion, Rhino, Elephant, Buffalo and Leopard, as well as crocodiles, Hippo, Cheetah and a huge
collection of different antelope. Accommodation is in bush camps, and you can choose your level of
luxury, from 5 star to tented bush camps. (Bring your anti-lion spray.)
The coast of South Africa is full of really good beaches. The water on the East coast is warm and surfing
and body surfing, as well as kite surfing, snorkeling, fishing and kayaking are all popular in the area.
There are also resorts with water slides, with some of the scariest being at Ushaka Marine world in
Durban – one of them almost vertical!
In the cold waters of the South and West coasts, whale watching and shark contacts are the rage, with
people being lowered into the ocean in shark cages to experience the perfect predator of the sea really
close up! Also in the area is the cable car up Table Mountain, offering spectacular views of Cape Town
and Table bay.
In the Central and Northern areas of South Africa are large tracts of almost uninhabited desert areas,
where there is no cellphone coverage, no TV and usually no telephones of any kind. The roads up there
are fairly good, but take lots of water – it goes up to 53 degrees centrigrade in the summer.
This is just a small sample of the adventures one can have in South Africa. There’s also white water
rafting, cycling and long distance races, rallying, quad biking, 4X4 trails, skydiving, chopper rides, and so
on and on.
South Africa is definitely not a boring country!
Cape Point is a historical landmark with an incredible view. It is one of the six main tourist attractions in
South Africa. Known as Cape of Good Hope, from its rugged, rocky outcrops and sheer cliffs to the
fynbos, it will reward visitors. Take the funicular to the old lighthouse at the top overlooking the
coastlineand have a look for yourself.
Shipwrecks:
1. 18 April 1911, the Lusitania, 500 tons, with 774 people aboard, struck the Bellows Rock.
2. The Thomas T Tucker – American Liberty Ship, built in 1942 and was intended as a troop and
supply ship in World War II. She sank at Olifantsbos just off the Point.

4. The Nolloth, 347 ton Dutch trawler, ran aground, it is said she was struck by an unidentified
underwater object bys most old sailors in this area says it wsa Albatross Rock.
Don’t mistaken:
The cold Benguela current on the West Coast and the warm Agulhas current on the East Coast meet
geographically at Cape Agulhas and not at Cape Point.
Cape Point becape a nature reserve in 1938 and became part of the Table Mountain National Park in
1998.
Cape Point consist of 7 750 hectares of rich and varied flora/fauna.
Cape Point has a 40 kilometre coastline that stretches from Schuster’s Bay to Smitswinkel Bay.
The cliffs at Cape Point southern point, is 200 metres high.
Cape Point has 3 clearly defined areas – Cape of Good Hope, Cape Maclear, Cape Point.
History of human habitation dates back to the early Stone Age [18 000 years], San and Khoi lived here.
In the 1500 and 1600 European seafarers navigated the Cape of Good Hope coasline: Bartholomew Dias
and Vasco Da Gama. They established the Cape sea route to the East. Two navigational beacons have
been erected at strategic points. 1488 Bartholomew Dias named the peninsula – [Cape of Storms].

On your safari in South Africa, you are sure to come across Nelson Mandela on your travels. He is still to
this day a very powerful figure in world politics. Not necessarily these days in the Government itself, but
as a symbol of hope over struggle, this man commands a respect not often given to other retired
leaders.
Nelson Mandela’s name, searched on Google throws up 961,000 references to him in just 81 seconds.
People are still fascinated by this man, by his life and his incredible charisma and how this one person
could have changed the history of one country so dramatically, to give it the chance of survival in the
21st
century.
On visiting Cape Town, one of the many attractions which people queue up to experience is Robben
Island. Nelson Mandela was imprisoned on Robben Island during the winter of 1964. Conditions were
harsh on the island, where Mandela was forced to spend 18 of his 27 years of incarceration.
Tokyo Sexwale, a former prisoner on the island wrote these eloquent words which sum up the bleakness
experienced by everyone who spent time there:
“Deep into the icy waters of the Atlantic
Somewhere around the Cape of Storms
Encaged by rocky beaches all around
Assaulted by piercing winds from the Benguelo
Like an abandoned Ship
Lies the Island of the Damned”
Today, a tour round Robben Island is one of the most rewarding attractions on offer in Cape Town.
Whisked by modern ferries across the expanse of water in around half an hour, you get the chance to
explore the infamous maximum security prison, interact with ex-political prisoners and get a feel of
what it would have been like to live there, just as Mandela did.
A little known fact about the island is it’s abundance of marine, bird and wildlife. African penguins have
been re-introduced after extinction in the 1800’s and have established a breeding colony. 132 different
bird species, as well as 23 species of mammals makes this island a haven for those people interested in
the environment.
References to Nelson Mandela’s life in Cape Town don’t stop there. Take the Footsteps to Freedom tour.
This city walking tour takes you on a guided stroll through historic Cape Town, telling the story of the
city’s early Dutch and British settlers, slavery in the Cape, the rise and fall of apartheid and South Africa’s
new democracy.
What a great way to learn the layout of the city and at the same time really live in the shoes of people
who change history.
If you want to take the Nelson Mandela tour one step further to its conclusion in the Western Cape, why
not visit the new Mandela House Museum out at Drakenstein. Drakenstein is about an hour and a half
drive out of Cape Town, on the road between Paarl and Franschhoek. The drive itself is a thing of
beauty, through the winelands to the mountains beyond.
The museum is the old Victor Verster prison in which Mandela spent the last few years of his
incarceration before his release in 1990. At the moment, the only way to visit is by prearranged
appointment only, but will be developed as a National Heritage site. Visit now whilst you still have the
chance of peace to reflect and contemplate reconciliation, human rights and justice.
I invite you to use these tips to make the most of your holiday in Cape Town and South Africa.

The Adventure Travel 2022

  • 1. Best Places for Adventure Travel Holidays When you travel, are you more of an all-inclusive resort kind of guy/gal or do you prefer to sign up for a homestay with a local family? Do you take the road less traveled rather than follow the crowd? Would you peek behind the curtain to see the real wizard of Oz or be too chicken to do so? Do you like to challenge yourself and step outside your comfort zone in a foreign country? If yes, then you are an adventure traveler hands down. So what exactly is adventure travel? Although it sounds like a neat little summary of certain travel experiences, it covers a wide range of activities. Think mountain trekking, bungee jumping, canoeing, scuba diving, ziplining, sandboarding, snowboarding, and more. Anything that gets your heart pumping harder than a walk in the park. It also includes overland travel on a bus or truck, urban exploration, communing with nature through eco-friendly adventures, and participating in local festivals in foreign countries. Have you decided where you want to spend your next travel escapade? What are your top adventure destinations? Instead of spinning a globe with your eyes closed and going wherever your index finger lands, why not check out our list of the world’s most adventurous places to visit in 2018? Here are 10 best places to travel for adventure around the world! The world’s most adventurous places to visit in 2018:
  • 2. The land of smiles remains one of the top adventure travel destinations for backpackers and with good reason t Thailand oo! It’s got it all: white sand beaches, full moon parties, golden temples, misty mountains, elephants, crazy nightlife, and crazy-delicious (and cheap!) street eats. Adventure seekers usually base themselves in centrally-located Bangkok and take a train, bus, or motorbike to the best adventure destinations. Meditate with the monks in Chiang Mai or get PADI certified in the turquoise ocean off many of the Thai islands. Australia The world’s most adventurous places to visit in 2018:  If you’re heading to the land down under for the best places for adventure travel, remember to pack your sunscreen! There are so many activities that make Oz one of the world’s top adventure destinations. From the Outback to the Great Barrier Reef, Cape Tribulation to Uluru, there’s so much to explore that you’ll never want to leave. Adventure seekers can surf, hike in the bush, feed (or eat!) kangaroos, and even snowboard (yes, there’s powder in Straya). Don’t miss Cairns, adventure capital of Australia for snorkeling, scuba diving, bungee jumping, or white water rafting Fired Travel Agent Wants Revenge! Here’s The Secret To Cheap Flights.
  • 3. Pakistan: The Best Place for Adventure Travel that Makes People Go, “You’re going where!?” I bet you weren’t expecting this to make the list of the best places for adventure travel holidays! Yep, let’s talk Pakistan. And before we do, you’re gonna have to leave all your stigmas at the door (along with your shoes, thank you very much)! Pakistan is one of those places where you’re taking adventure tourism to the next level. It drops a lot of the ‘tourism’ in the process. If your idea of the best adventure holiday is a lot of beautiful nature with a lot of friendly, inquisitive people, it’s worth flying in the face of the status quo and travelling to Pakistan. I mean, that’s the whole point of a travel adventure, right? You’ll find a lot of trekking in Pakistan with something for everyone. If you’re an avid trekker, the Karakoram range is magnificent and a true feat to experience. There are also more chill day hikes – and then there’s the 18-day trek to the K2 base camp (the second-highest mountain in the world).
  • 4. Will in passu pakistan near a bright blue lake Honestly, the sheer, audacious beauty! You can try going it solo to discover one of the most adventurous countries in the world all by your lonesome. There is certainly some solitude and epic adventure waiting for you! Even adventure travel is sometimes better shared though! New Zealand: Adventure Travel With a Bit of Everything! Time for something a little more standard but no-less downright gorgeous! The good thing about adventure travel in New Zealand is that you’re getting a lot of bang for your buck. It’s like seven countries in one neat little package. Ice-capped mountains? Check. Petrified forests? Check. Prehistoric coastline? Check. Uninhabited fjords? Check. And that’s just found while road tripping the South Island! New Zealand’s adventure tourism options have a flavour for everyone! The Great Walks offer multiple levels of trekking from the well-worn Abel Tasman to the near- undisturbed Stewart Island. Or, you know, you could just walk the entirety of New Zealand – I met a dude that did it without shoes. That’s pretty metal.
  • 5. Roys Peak Track, New Zealand Some BADASS hiking awaits you in New Zealand. But where do you go in New Zealand for the best overall adventure holiday? Easy one, man. You backpack Queenstown: the go-to for adventure travel sports and activities in New Zealand. You’ve got beautiful weather on the lake in the summer months. Then, come winter, all the snow bums roll in for the powder season. A year-long travel adventure backpacking epicentre! So what other adventure activities are there? It’s mega-famous for bungy jumping, ziplining, or you can book a skydiving tour. Honestly, it’s one of the most beautiful places in the world to do it. Oh, and if you get bored, beautiful, darling Wanaka is about an hour’s drive away Nepal: Holy Mountains and a Booming Adventure Tourism Industry The past decade has seen near-consistent growth in tourist arrivals to Nepal.
  • 6. How come? Hmm, I can’t be certain but it may have something to do with the Himalayas… Nepal is the ‘roof of the world’ after all. So what type of adventure tourism can you expect from Nepal? Well, again, it’s the Himalayan Mountains… so… a lot of mountaineering. Mind you, this is the final-boss-level mountaineering I’m talking about. The proper hardcore deal. However, Mount Everest is full of garbage and Nepal is struggling to keep up with its tourism. We’ll cover being a responsible tourist later on, but while we’re talking about Nepal, trek something other than Mt Everest. The Himilayan mountains seen from a tent Wake up to a view like this and you’ll know why Nepal is so special. You can disappear (safely) into the Annapurna range. This epic trekking loop strikes a nice balance between being both culturally authentic and tourist accessible. But pick your timing right: outside peak season but close to the cusp for the best of both worlds. Alternatively, just pick a direction and start walking. The further out you get to where the whiteys don’t go, the more spectacular and strange Nepal becomes. The chaos of India slowed down by the pace of mountain life.
  • 7. I’ve even heard whispers of a pristine ancient lake too; they say… Rara. And then there is travelling Pokhara. Pokhara, in many ways, is like Queenstown. Only it’s slower, it’s more chill, and you smoke hash instead of greenery. There’s a lot of adventure tourism activities around Pokhara now (as the industry has grown). You can learn to Paraglide, go trekking, and there’s some dope rafting around too. Costa Rica: Adventure Travel that’s Pura Vida Costa Rica – the birthplace of the zipline. So, now you know number one on your list of adventure activities to do in Costa Rica. Backpacking Costa Rica has got a lot to offer the adventure traveller: jungles, beaches, volcanoes. The nature in Costa Rica is one of the reasons that Costa Rica has remained one of the world’s best places for adventure travel for so long. Earn to your travel photos
  • 8. Its natural magnetism to travellers and ex-pats alike has made Costa Rica both a fantastic and varied place to travel. It’s also caused its prices to rise and become one of the more expensive choices for adventure holidays you can take while travelling Central America. The trade-off? It’s the goddamn birthplace of the zipline, remember? The famous Costa Rica Zipline and the birth of the canopy-surfing adventure tourism The public transport in Costa Rica is fairly serviceable. Image source: Steven Depolo (Flickr) Picture this: you’re cruising along at a cool 70km/hr. Beneath you, the rippling greens of the jungle canopy blur together. At the end of the line, a crew of trained squirrel monkeys await your arrival, a chilled refresco and caramel flan in hand. Ok, I made that last bit up (but I’m a writer, don’t you know). La Fortuna is your best destination for adventure tourism in Costa Rica. It’s a small town close to the piercing Arenal Volcano (which is an absolutely magnificent creature). In the area, you’ll find hiking, canyoning, rafting, and of course, the jungle zipline!
  • 9. And, if you’re more of a beach person, head towards Costa Rica’s coast for snorkelling and scuba diving action. 5 USA: The Adventure Travel MECCA Heading north from Central America takes us to… North America. Yeah, that makes sense. What will you find while exploring the USA? A lot of flag-waving patriots who chase tornadoes and pull their own teeth out on account of the lack of medical insurance. Anyway, other than that, you’ll find SO MUCH epic, adventure travel! The big, bold, and beautiful US of A is chock full of adventurous places to visit. Moab is one of the best places for adventure travel in the USA The world-famous mountain biking of Moab, Utah. So, where to travel for adventures in the USA? God, what do you like? Canyons, mountains, coasts, great lakes, rivers, prairies… it’s all there.
  • 10. Moab (Utah) takes the top pick as one of the best places for an adventure vacation in the USA. It is the go-to for mountain biking with courses ranging from the beginner all the way up to the ‘holy shit, I might die’. You’ll also find heaps of sweet rafting, ATV driving, horseback riding… it’s an adrenaline junkie’s desert playground! Yellowstone National Park (Wyoming) has hiking and hot springs. That’s a no brainer! Anywhere that has hot springs is going to make for a top trip. Colorado: home of the Rocky Mountains! What do you get there? Mate, were you not listening; I just told you – the Rocky Mountains! Hikes, rock climbing, and legal bud; it may just be heaven-on-earth. Yosemite National Park, California: is the impossible-to-not-mention choice. The undisputed king of the USA’s national parks featuring the truly staggering peaks of free-soloing ‘What’s a rope?’ Alex Honnold fame Why Go Backpacking in Argentina
  • 11. Backpacking Argentina means you are in for a treat. Experience an incredible culture, beautiful beaches, breathtaking waterfalls, and drink the best coffee or wine you’ve ever had. There’s a reason why Argentina is so popular amongst travelers and especially backpackers. But don’t be fooled, the country is huge and there are endless options for adventures. Whether you’re visiting for a short time or planning a complete road trip, being prepared is the most important part of your travels. This Argentina Travel Guide includes all of the tips and tricks that my team and I have gathered over the years. From budget- friendly accommodations and adventures to insurance and safety, we’ve got everything covered. Experience the beauty of the country and make the most out of your trip with the following Argentina Travel Guide! Let’s get right to it… Why Go Backpacking in Argentina? Before you start your travels, be sure to check out how big Argentina really is – the 8th largest country in the world. If you’re only planning on visiting for a week, it is pretty much impossible to get around the whole country. Knowing what you want to see and where you want to go will definitely make a difference in your Argentina experience. g Argentina is located in the Southern half of South America and has other popular neighboring countries like Brazil, Chile, and Bolivia. The good news: Argentina is a lot cheaper than most of the other South American countries and it’s offering just as many adventures, hotspots and things to explore.
  • 12. If you tried to describe Argentina with a couple of words – it wouldn’t be possible. There are extremes like humid rainforests, snowy mountains, tiny villages, and highly developed cities crashing into each other, making it a dream for every backpacker. Canada: Adventure Travel With a Dash of Solitude Since we’re talking about vast, harsh, sparsely populated wildernesses, we should talk about Canada. You’ve got a lot of chill places and cool cities in Canada (like Vancouver)… and then you head into the great outdoors and oh wow! It’s mega pretty. What kind of extreme adventure vacations can you get up to in Canada? Well… that depends on how extreme you’re willing to go. For something fun but with a low chance of death, there’s skiing and snowboarding at a resort such as Whistler. Hit the slopes and then get all the perks of a ski-town: loud parties and hordes of drunk Australians. Don’t worry, we’ve got awesome hostel suggestions for budget adventurers too!
  • 13. Oh, you wanted something with a high chance of death? Sorry, I misheard you. How about ice-climbing UP A FROZEN WATERFALL! How’s that for an extreme adventure vacation? It’s your very own Tom Cruise movie! Visit one of Toronto’s many neighborhoods for a taste of some amazing culture and food, or ascend the CN Tower to see the city in its entirety. Don’t forget to make a day trip out to Niagara Falls either! After Toronto, make a quick pit stop in Ottawa for a healthy dose of history and politics. This is one of the most pleasant and efficient cities in the world and makes for a great break from the bustling metropolises. Finally, drop by Montreal for a little slice of French culture and big ol’ heaping of nightlife. The parties in this Euro-esque city are among the best in the world. Explore Vancouver and the surrounding province of British Columbia, which are among the best places in Canada! On this 10-day itinerary, you’ll go from sea to sky, visiting the stunning coast of Vancouver Island to the snowy mountains around Whistler-Blackcomb. Start by flying into the glittering city of Vancouver. Walk, bike or kayak around its many streets and waterways and savor the magnificent urban scenery. Take a ferry across the channel to see Victoria and Vancouver Island. Here are among the wildest and most beautiful beaches in Canada, not to mention some awe-inspiring mountains and woods. Head back to Vancouver and then drive up the Sea to Sky Highway all the way to Whistler. Passing through and by the Howe Sound, Stawamus Chief, and Garibaldi Provincial Park, this is one of the best drives in Canada. Stay in Whistler for a few days and hit the slopes followed by the rowdy local bars. The Canadian Rockies are absolutel” breathtaking and hiking here is a must when planning a trip to Canada. Start in either Calgary or Edmonton and make your way through the mountains, visiting both Banff and Jasper National Parks in doing so. Banff is the country’s premier outdoor destination. Here are some of the coolest places in Canada including the likes of Lake O’Hara, The Great Divide, and Mount Assiniboine.
  • 14. For a more intimate meeting with the mountains, head to Jasper, which receives far fewer tourists than neighboring Banff. This park has some equally gorgeous spots though like Mt Robson, Maligne Lake, and the Columbia Icefields. Be sure to spend some time in Calgary as well as Edmonton as well. Both are very affluent cities with lots of activities going on. This is the ultimate backpacking itinerary for Canada! Over the course of a month, you’ll travel to Canada’s top destinations including Nova Scotia and the vast Prairielands, in addition to all the locations previously mentioned in the preceding itineraries. This itinerary is best done as a road trip – with your own car you’ll have maximum freedom to see each attraction. Begin the first leg of your road trip – from Vancouver to Calgary – navigating lush and crossing the epic Rocky Mountains along the way. Dive down into the endless wheat fields of Saskatchewan and Manitoba before reaching the urban megalopolises of Toronto and Montreal. End your trip on the wild and rugged beaches of Nova Scotia and its capital city, Halifax. Here is a bastion of English tradition, where the customs are wholly unique and definitely worth experiencing. Eat some seafood and learn about the origins of Canada. Places to Visit in Canada
  • 15. Backpacking Vancouver Nestled at the foot of the Coastal Range mountains of British Columbia, Vancouver is an absolute gem of a city. Year after year, this glittering, ultra-modern metropolis ranks amongst the best cities to live in both Canada and, for that matter, the entire world. Vancouver is gorgeous, brilliantly designed, offers superlative dining experiences, and is chalked full of things to do. Backpackers in Vancouver will probably notice first the dense and hyper-developed City Centre, which appears both harmonious and somewhat claustrophobic at the same time; this is quintessential Vancouver. The city’s planning – an effort to house as many residents in the center as possible – has been so effective that it’s even given rise to its own term: vancouverism. Here is where most tourists spend their time The first places to visit in Vancouver are probably visiting picturesque Stanley Park and Coal Harbor. Afterward, check out one of the many impressive galleries and/or museums scattered throughout the city, like Science World or the Vancouver Art Gallery. The best way to experience Vancouver is not so much by visiting individual sites but by just walking around and being a part it. There are several pathways spread throughout the city that offer panoramic views. Visiting one of the many parks, like Queen Elizabeth, Charleson, and English Bay, is a great way to soak in the views. Vancouver’s greatest asset is its proximity to some spectacular nature. Being so close to the mountains means that there’s plenty of hiking to do. A walk across the Capilano Suspension Bridge, on the outskirts of the city, is one of the most well-known attractions. In the winter, skiers/snowboarders will be spoiled with slopes that are no more than 45 minutes away #8 Mongolia: Adventure Travel With The OG Nomads This is one of the best adventure holidays in Asia as far as I’m concerned. It’s a long-time dream of mine: to ride a horse on the plains of Mongolia. I haven’t done it yet – timing is important – so I’m recommending you to do it.
  • 16. Why? Well, if you want to truly call yourself a nomad, then you gotta be a damn nomad! You need a horse on the plateaus of Mongolia. You need to search for water for your travelling companion and shoot at horse thieves with your bow. I met a good dude in New Zealand. He’d never ridden a horse before and he was curious, so he went to Mongolia and made his very own horseback adventure tour. Now that is bad-ass! China: The Other Best Place for Adventure Travel that Makes People Say, “You went where!?” Good ol’ communist China: the antithesis to the American Dream. It’s like going to another planet so, if you can’t get ‘off the beaten track’ there, you’re probably doing something wrong. China is a hit with backpackers in search of adventure! You’ll almost always be mildly-to-noticeably uncomfortable which makes for some of the most character-building adventure holidays for both single travellers and couples. It’s also a solid destination choice for a cheap adventure holiday. It’s not as cheap as, say, Nepal, but it’s cheaper than most people realise (especially if you’re camping in nature). Mount Huashan is the top trips in China’s adventure tourism
  • 17. Do it. What’s the worst that can happen? Image source: SunriseOdyssey (Flickr) So, what kind of adventure activities await in China? Well, trekking galore; I’ve heard the Great Wall is kind of long and, yup, you can camp on it! Or you can visit Tiger Leaping Gorge or Mount Huashan which is considered one of the most dangerous hiking trails in the world. Deadly hiking in China – now that’s an extreme adventure vacation! I mean, hell, just buy a bicycle and see how far you can get across the supreme landscape. It’s China, you’re pretty much guaranteed an adventure no matter where you go! China is an absolutely massive country with just about every environment imaginable. The country is full of mega-cities, epic mountains, barren deserts, lush forests, and sandy beaches. When backpacking China, you’re definitely spoiled for choices. In a country so huge, it’s best to stick to a specific region if you’re strapped for time. You could spend an entire lifetime exploring China and not see it all. Trust me – I lived there for 6 years and traveled extensively, but still only scratched the surface. Let’s start by acknowledging that one week in China definitely is not enough time to explore this country. That being said, you can still hit some of the highlights of the country with just seven days. You’ll want to fly into Beijing and spend a few days taking in the famous sights such as the Great Wall and Forbidden City. Hop on an overnight train to save time and head to the historical city of Xi’an to see the Terracotta Warriors. From there, make a beeline for Chengdu to visit the giant panda reserve and eat the mouth-numbingly spicy hot pot. You can catch a flight out of the country from Chengdu, most likely to Southeast Asia. With ten days, you can follow the above itinerary (Beijing, Xi’an, and Chengdu) but add a visit to some of Sichuan’s magnificent national parks. A short flight from Chengdu will get you to the dreamlike Jiuzhaigou, where you can spend a day exploring the stunning landscapes and taking in the Tibetan culture. Pay a visit to Huanglong (Yellow Dragon) the next day to see the incredible terraces that are said to resemble a dragon coming down the mountain. Want to aford like travel place
  • 18. If you have two weeks to spare in China, I highly recommend you spend a majority of your time in the southwest part of the country. Yunnan province alone offers enough to fill two weeks. Start in the provincial capital of Kunming, which is known as the Spring City for its pleasant weather. The city is great, but you’ll want to venture out quickly to dedicate more time to places like Dali, Lijiang, and Shangri-la. Spend your days cycling around massive lakes or trekking around snow-capped mountains. From Yunnan, you can catch a flight or overnight train to Guilin, the capital of Guangxi. A short bus ride will take you to the backpacker haven of Yanghsuo, where you can cruise on a bamboo raft down the Li River past majestic karst mountain peaks. There’s also cycling, hiking, and rock climbing on tap here, in addition to some seriously wild nightlife.
  • 19. Backpacking So you have a whole month in China, do you? That’s great news, as you’ll be able to cover some serious ground thanks to the country’s extensive rail network. Based on my experiences traveling all over the country, I’d combine the above-mentioned itineraries and add a bit more. In addition to Beijing, Xi’an, Sichuan, Yunnan, and Guangxi, you can tack on a backpacking trip to Hong Kong, which is technically part of China but feels worlds apart. From here, you’ve got unlimited options for onward travel. You could also travel to Macau as well. That’s super close to Hong Kong and a whole other adventure.
  • 20. While you can fill your days in Beijing by sticking to the well-trodden tourist path, there are lots of great side adventures that you can add to make your trip a bit more interesting. Taking a bus for 1-2 hours in any direction can lead you out of the urban sprawl and to some pretty incredible places. You can go rafting and bungee jumping out at Shidu, hike up to a serene Buddhist temple in the mountains, or hike on the wild Great Wall. A major highlight of any visit to Beijing is indulging in the culinary and nightlife scenes. Beijingers know how to eat, and they sure know how to party. Whether you’re sampling the legendary Beijing roast duck or just eating weird shit on sticks at the Wangfujing night market, you’ll never go hungry in the ‘Jing. If you’re looking to party, you’ve got several choices as well. With cheap drinks and good times abound in the student haunt of Wudaokou, there are more bars than you can count in the trendy Sanlitun district, or you can dance all night at the clubs around Worker’s Stadium. After a big night out, you can even hit a 24-hour dim sum restaurant to soak up some of that booze. Backpacking Yunnan The name of this province in southwest China literally translates to “South of the Clouds,” and you’ll quickly see why if you choose to visit Yunnan. Home to many stunning mountain ranges that literally touch the clouds, it’s a very appropriate name. If you’re into adventure travel, nature, and unique local culture, you’ve come to the right place. Master Mentalism & Magic Tricks
  • 21. Most trips to Yunnan will start and end in Kunming, a “small” city of 6 million. There’s enough to do here to keep you busy for a few days, such as strolling around the central Green Lake Park, hiking in the Western Hills, or visiting the quirky Bird & Flower Market. Kunming is home to a sizeable expat population, and it’s one of your best bets if you’re thinking of sticking around a while to teach English in China or study Chinese. There’s a very established backpacker route through Yunnan that goes from Kunming to Dali, Lijiang, the Tiger Leaping Gorge, and Shangri-la. This is far and away one of the most beautiful areas of China, full of towering mountains and rushing rivers. Forget those images you may have of giant cities full of traffic and smog. This is the reason backpacking China is such an incredible experience. While each of these towns can seem overwhelmingly crowded and touristy, rest assured that it’s never that hard to escape. Chinese tourists tend to follow a herd mentality and stick to their tour bus.
  • 22. Simply jump on a bicycle and start pedaling or skip the cable car and hike up that mountain and you’ll find yourself in near solitude. Check out our comprehensive guide to backpacking Yunnan to plan an epic trip to this corner of China. Backpacking Sichuan If you’ve ever eaten in a Chinese restaurant, you’ve probably had something labeled as Szechuan. That’s the old spelling of this province that’s famous worldwide for its cuisine. The common flavor here is known as ma la in Chinese, meaning “numb and spicy.” Set your taste buds ablaze with classic Sichuanese dishes such as Kung Pao chicken, Mapo tofu, and of course, hot pot. In the provincial capital of Chengdu, you can pay a visit to the massive giant panda base. This is far from a zoo, as it’s a fully functioning research facility and conservation center. It’s best to visit early in the morning when the cute and cuddly “bear cats” (the literal translation of their Chinese name) are munching away on bamboo. Chengdu is one of the coolest cities in China, so you might as well stick around a few days and explore. The people here are known to be super laid-back and friendly. Head to the People’s Park to soak up the
  • 23. local culture, which includes lots of tea sipping and group dancing. There are plenty of great hostels and bars here, so you’ll meet lots of fellow backpackers during your stay. Sichuan is home to some of China’s most famous national parks. Jiuzhaigou is one of most picturesque places in the country, with turquoise lakes, epic mountain peaks, and massive waterfalls. Those looking for a serious adventure here will want to sign up for an eco-tourism trek in the nearby Zharu Valley. On this 3-day trip, you’ll reach the summit of a sacred Tibetan mountain at 4,200 meters. It’s one of the most challenging and rewarding adventures I’ve ever had in China and something I’d highly recommend. Backpacking Guangxi When it comes to backpacking China, it’s hard to beat the town of Yangshuo. Just a few decades ago, this was a sleepy rural Chinese town with little to no tourism infrastructure. When long-haired backpackers started showing up looking to scale the town’s beautiful karst mountains, a new industry was born. Yangshuo is now one of the most popular backpacker destinations in the country, with a ton of hostels, restaurants, bars, and travel agents. It has also become a hot spot for domestic tourists, who flock here by the tour bus-load to crowd the West Street. Don’t be discouraged, though, as once again it’s very
  • 24. easy to escape the crowds. Just rent a bicycle or a motorbike, and you’ll find yourself out in some of the most unreal landscapes you’ve ever seen without a tour group in sight. Another spot worth visiting is the area known as the Longji Rice Terraces. The name means “Dragon’s Backbone,” as the terraced rice paddies are said to resemble exactly that. Unfortunately, they decided to put a hideous cable car in here. Chinese tourists tend to be lazy and avoid hiking at all costs, so it’s not surprising. Despite this eyesore, it’s still a great place for a few days of casual hiking. Backpacking Shaanxi Shaanxi Province is home to one of the most famous sights in all of China – the Terracotta Warriors. As a matter of fact, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is said to be the most impressive archaeological discovery of the 20th century. This is the mausoleum of Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of a unified China. As with many things in China, there’s a fascinating story behind it. Qin Shi Huang survived three assassination attempts and was justifiably fearing for his life. The emperor became obsessed with finding an “elixir of life” in search of immortality. He also had a gigantic mausoleum constructed and had it surrounded by thousands of life-like statues of warriors and chariots to protect him in the afterlife. This was later discovered by workers who were digging a well in 1974, and it quickly drew international attention. To visit the Terracotta Warriors, you’ll want to base yourself in
  • 25. the provincial capital of Xi’an. Set aside a day to explore the impressive site, and at least 1-2 more to see what Xi’an has to offer. Here you can rent a bicycle and ride around the entire length of the ancient City Wall. Be sure to visit the Muslim Quarter in the evening, where you can find tons of delicious street food. Xi’an is famous for a few dishes, such as the yang rou pao mo lamb stew and rou jia mo, which are basically Chinese pulled pork sandwiches. You’re strapped in for safety, but that doesn’t make it any less terrifying. If you survive, you’ll be able to say you conquered one of the Five Great Mountains in China. Getting Off the Beaten Path in China Those looking to skip out on matching hat-wearing, flag-following, selfie-snapping hordes of Chinese tourists will want to head straight for northwest China. Perhaps no place in China is more off the beaten path than the autonomous region of Xinjiang. The area is home to numerous ethnic groups, including Uygurs, Kazakhs, and Mongols. It’s been the sight of some serious unrest in recent years, meaning most tourists stay far away. While many in China will try to convince you that Xinjiang is far too dangerous, you just need to exercise some caution and patience and you can have a perfectly fine trip here. In addition to some of the most mesmerizing landscapes in the country, Xinjiang also has some of the most delicious food in all of China. It’s pretty hard to beat some spicy grilled lamb with a nice piece of naan. Despite their bad reputation across China, the Uyghur people are known to be incredibly hospitable and welcoming to visitors (unless you’re Han Chinese, that is). While we’re talking about lesser-visited parts of China, we can’t leave out Inner Mongolia. If you can’t make it to actual Mongolia, this is a pretty decent backup. You can still sleep in a yurt in the desert and then go horseback riding in the seemingly endless grasslands. All of this can easily be arranged from one of the hostels in the capital of Hohot. Another great spot for some off the beaten path adventures is Qinghai Province. This is one of the most sparsely populated regions of China, meaning you won’t have to share the stunning landscapes with a
  • 26. bunch of tourists. Here you can soak up the Tibetan culture without the added hassle of traveling to Tibet. You can also visit the largest lake in all of China. It should be noted that by just being in China, you’re already sort of off the beaten path. Sure, the country gets a whole bunch of international visitors every year, but you’re still very much a novelty here. Even in the big cities of Beijing and Shanghai, don’t be surprised to hear people shout “Laowai! (Foreigner!)” and point at you. They might even try to take a picture with you. Such is life when you’re traveling in China. Even though the country has been open for several decades, foreigners are still surprising to most locals. For many of the places in the world I travel to, drinking the water from the tap or a side-stream on a forest trail is an almost guaranteed ticket (one-way with no plans) to the toilet bowl. The only practical previous option I had whilst traveling was to buy plastic bottles. My soul hurt every single time I bought plastic, but hell, we all have to drink water, right? At least then I knew I would not be having some diabolical form of Montezuma’s revenge careening through my digestive track. Once I had a GEOPRESS in my gear kit, it was pretty much game over for the plastic BS from there. No more plastic bottles and no more fear of parasite-ridden water. The best of both worlds. On my last trip to Pakistan, I was able to easily filter water from my hotel sink in Lahore before I also sipped on filtered and icy cold glacier water from the Himalaya and Karakoram. That beats the hell out of table water any day. But how does it all work? Is it actually a functional filter water bottle? Some of them will also take you to the Falkland Islands which are super damn pretty. Now, you could always shore up your boat life skills and test the hell out of yourself and your crew by sailing there… Either way, you can expect a lot of wildlife watching as well as some adventure activities alongside such as kayaking, scuba diving, and paddle-boarding. Brazil’s history is filled with economic turmoil, veering from boom to bust, and its culture is a melting pot that has traditionally welcomed the world. Brazil is one of the world’s top tourist destinations. However, the country in the 21st century confronts serious questions touching on poverty, inequality, governance and the environment. Brazil gained independence from Portugal in the early 19th century, and its government evolved from monarchy to military dictatorship to civilian rule. Today, Brazil is a democratic federal republic. Rich with natural resources, Brazil’s economy is active in the agricultural, manufacturing, mining and service sectors. The nation is a top producer in coffee production. Brazil’s economy grew rapidly during the first decade of the 21st century, and it now has one of the world’s largest economies in terms of gross domestic product, according to the International Monetary Fund. The boom has faced a slowdown in recent years, which in turn has triggered growing public anger over longstanding issues of poverty and allegations of corruption cutting across the nation’s social, economic and political institutions. Its civilization, however, is one of history’s oldest and most influential, credited with creating the concept of democracy as well as the ancient Olympic Games, and laying Western foundations in science, the arts and philosophy. Greece occupies the southernmost part of Europe’s Balkan Peninsula, as well as a collection of islands that dot the Aegean, Ionian and Mediterranean seas. Its landscapes of mountains, hills and coastline and its rich cultural heritage make it one of the most visited countries in the world. Greece broke away from the Ottoman Empire and declared independence in the early 19th century. A referendum in 1974 abolished the monarchy and created the parliamentary republic that exists today. The country has a free-market economy with some government involvement. Fueled by the tourism industry, services comprise the largest economic sector in the country, both for employment and contribution to the Greek gross domestic product. Shipping, industrial production and agriculture are other significant sectors of the economy. [Explore top universities in Greece] Following the global financial crisis, Greece went into recession in 2009. The global economic downturn exposed years of government deficit spending in the country, and the International Monetary Fund and eurozone governments have provided aid packages that are tied to sharp austerity programs for the Greek government. The ongoing Greek debt crisis raises questions about the futures of the eurozone, the European Union and of the Greek people, who face years of living under austerity measures. Within the European Union, Greece has one of the highest unemployment rates – particularly for young adults – as well as an alarming risk of poverty for its citizens. The nation has also become a major crossroads for migrants, though many have faced border closures and deteriorating conditions at camps. Named after Mumtaz Mahal, the favorite wife of Emperor Shah Jahan, this most beautiful of mausoleums was begun upon her death in 1631 and took 20,000 workmen until 1648 to complete. Incorporating many elements of Islamic design including arches, minarets, an onion-shaped dome, and black calligraphy inlaid around the entrance, the Taj Mahal is largely constructed of white marble. Mumbai: The Gateway of India The Gateway of India, Mumbai The Gateway of India, Mumbai Standing an impressive 26 meters tall and overlooking the Arabian Sea, the iconic Gateway of India is a must-see when in Mumbai. Built to commemorate the arrival of King George V and his wife Queen Mary in 1911, this stunning piece of architecture was opened with much pomp and ceremony in 1924 and was, for a while, the tallest structure in the city. Constructed entirely of yellow basalt and concrete and notable for its Indo-Saracenic design, the Gateway of India was also the scene of a rather less jubilant procession of British soldiers in 1948 when India gained its independence. These days, the huge archway provides a stunning backdrop that is as popular among locals as it is tourists. Hot Tip: After visiting the Gateway of India, pop over to the adjacent Taj Mahal Palace and Tower for a delectable High Tea, a fun thing to do in Mumbai since this lovely luxury hotel opened in 1903. • 49. Hunza Valley - Northern Pakistan Lord Curzon, a former viceroy, said, “The little state of Hunza contains more summits of over 20,000 feet than there are of over 10,000 feet in the entire Alps.” Visitors to Hunza are deeply overwhelmed by the rugged charm and the fragrant breeze singing through graceful trees and the lushious green attractively carpeted fields all set against a background of snow-covered mountains. Situated at an elevation of 2,438 metres, Hunza Valley’s tourist season peaks from May to October. The temperature in May is 27 C maximum and 14 C minimum. While the October temperatures range from: 10 C maximum to 0 C minimum. Glaciers abound in this valley, including the 30-mile long Batura and the immense Virjerab and Hispar glaciers. The Nubra, Braldu, Hushe and Saltoro rivers are born in the glacier-laced Karakorum; the Shyok River encircles the eastern flanks of the range; but only the Hunza River actually cuts from north to south completely through the Karakorum Range. The Hunza River has its origin in name at the juncture of the Kilik and Khunjerab nalas, some 100 miles from the river’s mouth near Gilgit. Carving a gorge between 25,000-foot peaks and receiving the waters of scores of glaciers, this is by far the largest and the
  • 50. grandest tributory of the Gilgit River watershed. Most parts of Hunza offer an awe-inspiring view of Rakaposhi (7,788 metres). The snows of Rakaposhi glitter in the moonlight, producing an atmosphere of ethereal magnetism. The fairy-tale like castle of Baltit, just above Karimabad, is a Hunza landmark built about 600 years ago. Stilted on massive legs, its wooden bay windows look out over the valley. Originally, this was used as the residence of the Mirs (the title of the former rules) of Hunza. REGION OF HUNZA.. The Hunza Valley is composed of “Hunza Proper” (as Hunzakuts call it) in the midvalley, while the larger upper valley region is called Gujal and is populated by the Wakhi-speaking ethnic Wakhi. Nagar, another former state, is located in two areas, and you will visit its narrow glaciated canyons as you proceed up the valley. The Nagarwals speak Burushaski with their own accent. Practice your Burushaski, with those you meet; people will enjoy it, and you may be asked in for tea. Burushaski is a complex language with four genders, and it is a “language isolate,” unrelated to any other tongue. The famous Hunza water (famous for long life and youth) is locally called “mel”. Four clans live in Hunza, and each is said to have originally come from a different region: Dramatin from Tartary, Barataling from Russia, Kurukutz from Persia, and Broung from kashmir. The 6-mile long fertile oasis beginning at Hassanabad contains small villages among terraced fields and is the center of the former state. Not far beyond Aliabad a link road branches uphill to the north of the KKH (Karakorum Highway)and is the direct way to Karimabad and Baltit (65 miles from Gilgit and ranging 500 feet up and down the hill at roughly 7,800 feet in elevation). Because of their inns and their spectacular location overlooking Rakaposhi and the green fields of Hunza and nagar, these two towns, Kareemabad in particular, function as the focus of Hunza for most visitors. HISTORY OF HUNZA.. Just beyond ‘Ganesh Village’ below Kareemabad, the KKH (Karakorum Highway) crosses the Hunza river on a large, graceful bridge. Within walking distance from the bridge right on the roadside is ‘Haldikish’ (Place of the Rams), also known as the “Sacred Rock” of Hunza. This large rock has many carvings from different eras and in varying scripts. At Shiskot the KKH crosses the west side of the river and soon reaches Gulmit (about 8,000 feet). Gulmit has a couple of lodges and the town in itself, is an attractive one to visit. Just above the lodges is the Hunza Cultural Museum. Hunza is an ideal place for mountaineering, trekking and hiking. Every area in the Hunza Valley up to, but not including , Chapursan is officially considered an openzone, even the dicey Hispar Glacier. Most treks in this valley are’nt particularly long ones but there are exceptions; the Hispar-Biafo walk and the hike to Shimshal are among such exceptions. Hunza genuinely offers an experience of a lifetime! Hunza Valley

While the major centers like Cape Town and Johannesburg already popular with tourists, it’s the smaller venues that are getting some much deserved attention. This is a very diverse country and he diversity is in much more than just its people. The Free State is probably the least “famous” province in South Africa but it is arguably the most authentic. Known for its vast open spaces, it’s a province that is dominated by farming communities and old South African charm. With Bloemfontein as the biggest city, the majority of the Free State is untouched by major development you can drive for hours through the long roads and see nothing but the odd sheep here and there. Local Farm shops in small towns selling traditional food and craft is more than just charming – its an experience. Small artist communities like the one in Clarens is like stepping into a new universe while the scenic beauty of the Golden Gate mountain range allows you to explore the magnificent natural beauty. • 55. South Africa is a land of contrasts, with first world city areas contrasted by wild wilderness areas, and suburbia contrasted by huge tracts of land where only wild animals live. The Drakensberg Mountains are a range of mountains formed by the bottom end of the African rift valley, with peaks rising to 3600 metres. There are many hiking trails which go up these mountains, with
  • 56. overnight huts and caves at intervals along the trails. The weather up there can change in a matter of minutes, with heavy snow, and many hikers have had to be airlifted out by air force choppers, so one needs to choose one’s season carefully. The scenery, however, is stunning. Down on the East coast of South Africa is the Storms river bridge, one of the highest concrete arch bridges in Africa, and there is a permanent bungee jumping installation there. You fall a long way before the rope starts slowing you down! There are quite a number of old steam locomotives that are still pulling trains around scenic parts of the coast and midlands. They are run for tourists, and booking is essential. The steam trains are run by clubs of enthusiasts, and are kept in shiny condition. If you like the smell of coal smoke and grit in your eyes, this is for you! The Kruger National Park is a very large game park at the North Eastern corner of South Africa, bordering on Mozambique. It will take you more than a day to drive through this park from South to North, but it is better to spend at least 4 to 5 days there in order to see all the game. The big 5 are all there – Lion, Rhino, Elephant, Buffalo and Leopard, as well as crocodiles, Hippo, Cheetah and a huge collection of different antelope. Accommodation is in bush camps, and you can choose your level of luxury, from 5 star to tented bush camps. (Bring your anti-lion spray.) The coast of South Africa is full of really good beaches. The water on the East coast is warm and surfing and body surfing, as well as kite surfing, snorkeling, fishing and kayaking are all popular in the area. There are also resorts with water slides, with some of the scariest being at Ushaka Marine world in Durban – one of them almost vertical! In the cold waters of the South and West coasts, whale watching and shark contacts are the rage, with people being lowered into the ocean in shark cages to experience the perfect predator of the sea really close up! Also in the area is the cable car up Table Mountain, offering spectacular views of Cape Town and Table bay. In the Central and Northern areas of South Africa are large tracts of almost uninhabited desert areas, where there is no cellphone coverage, no TV and usually no telephones of any kind. The roads up there are fairly good, but take lots of water – it goes up to 53 degrees centrigrade in the summer. This is just a small sample of the adventures one can have in South Africa. There’s also white water rafting, cycling and long distance races, rallying, quad biking, 4X4 trails, skydiving, chopper rides, and so on and on.
  • 57. South Africa is definitely not a boring country! Cape Point is a historical landmark with an incredible view. It is one of the six main tourist attractions in South Africa. Known as Cape of Good Hope, from its rugged, rocky outcrops and sheer cliffs to the fynbos, it will reward visitors. Take the funicular to the old lighthouse at the top overlooking the coastlineand have a look for yourself. Shipwrecks: 1. 18 April 1911, the Lusitania, 500 tons, with 774 people aboard, struck the Bellows Rock. 2. The Thomas T Tucker – American Liberty Ship, built in 1942 and was intended as a troop and supply ship in World War II. She sank at Olifantsbos just off the Point. 3. The Phyllisia, 452 ton trawler, struck rocks 100 m off the coast of the Cape Point on 3 May 1968. Eleven of her crew reached the shore, 14 still remained on board. South African Airforce helicopters air-lifted them to safety. 4. The Nolloth, 347 ton Dutch trawler, ran aground, it is said she was struck by an unidentified underwater object bys most old sailors in this area says it wsa Albatross Rock. Don’t mistaken: The cold Benguela current on the West Coast and the warm Agulhas current on the East Coast meet geographically at Cape Agulhas and not at Cape Point.

Conditions were harsh on the island, where Mandela was forced to spend 18 of his 27 years of incarceration. Tokyo Sexwale, a former prisoner on the island wrote these eloquent words which sum up the bleakness experienced by everyone who spent time there: “Deep into the icy waters of the Atlantic Somewhere around the Cape of Storms Encaged by rocky beaches all around Assaulted by piercing winds from the Benguelo Like an abandoned Ship Lies the Island of the Damned” Today, a tour round Robben Island is one of the most rewarding attractions on offer in Cape Town. Whisked by modern ferries across the expanse of water in around half an hour, you get the chance to explore the infamous maximum security prison, interact with ex-political prisoners and get a feel of what it would have been like to live there, just as Mandela did. A little known fact about the island is it’s abundance of marine, bird and wildlife. African penguins have been re-introduced after extinction in the 1800’s and have established a breeding colony. 132 different bird species, as well as 23 species of mammals makes this island a haven for those people interested in the environment.
