Saint Valentine was a priest who secretly married couples against the orders of Emperor Claudius II. When the emperor discovered Saint Valentine's actions, he had Saint Valentine imprisoned and sentenced to death. While in prison, Saint Valentine fell in love with the jailor's daughter and sent her a farewell love letter signed "Your Valentine" before his death. Today on February 14th, Valentine's Day is celebrated in many countries with the exchanging of cards, flowers, and gifts as a tribute to Saint Valentine and as a way to express love and affection.

engagements in Rome.
• He stopped the marriages because he was having a hard time having
men sign up for his Army.
• Emperor Claudius II thought that this was because the men did not
want to leave their families and loved ones back home.

• A priest named Saint Valentine lived in Rome and thought that this
was wrong, so he helped perform marriages in secret.
• When Emperor Claudius II found out about the secret marriages, he
had Saint Valentine thrown in jail while Valentine waited to be killed.

• Before he was killed he sent her a love letter that was signed Your
Valentine.
• The phrase is still used on Valentine cards today.
