Ryan Nelson University of Virginia MISQUarterly Executive Executive Summary In recent years, IT project failures have received a great deal of attention in the press as well as the boardroom. In an attempt to avoid disasters going forward, many organizations are now learning from the past by conducting retrospectives—that is, project postmortems or post-implementation reviews. While each individual retrospective tells a unique story and contributes to organizational learning, even more insight can be gained by examining multiple retrospectives across a variety of organizations over time. This research aggregates the knowledge gained from 99 retrospectives conducted in 74 organizations over the past seven years. It uses the findings to reveal the most common mistakes and suggest best practices for more effective project management.2 InFAMOuS FAILurES “Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” — Albert Einstein If failure teaches more than success, and if we are to believe the frequently quoted statistic that two out of three IT projects fail,3 then the IT profession must be developing an army of brilliant project managers. Yet, although some project managers are undoubtedly learning from experience, the failure rate does not seem to be decreasing. This lack of statistical improvement may be due to the rising size and complexity of projects, the increasing dispersion of development teams, and the reluctance of many organizations to perform project retrospectives.4 There continues to be a seemingly endless stream of spectacular IT project failures. No wonder managers want to know what went wrong in the hopes that they can avoid similar outcomes going forward. Figure 1 contains brief descriptions of 10 of the most infamous IT project failures. These 10 represent the tip of the iceberg. They were chosen because they are the most heavily cited5 and because their magnitude is so large. Each one reported losses over $100 million. Other than size, these projects seem to have little in common. Ehresman November 12, 2018 IBM: Organizational Change Celebrating its one hundredth anniversary this year, International Business Machines Corporation is located in Armonk, New York, has 426,751 employees worldwide, and enjoys revenues of $99.9 billion (IBMa, 2011). Founded in 1911 in New York by Charles F. Flint, and originally named The Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company or CTR, the company manufactured and sold commercial scales, time recorders for industry, tabulators, along with other items. Operating out of New York City, the company employed 1,300 people with plants in several cities in addition to one in Canada. In 1914, Thomas J. Watson Sr. took over the company, and with his guidance, CTR became a frontrunner in technology and innovation, and a soon to be multinational corporation (IBMb, 2011). Changing its name to International Business Machines Corporation in 1924, IBM went on to develop new technologies, and in the 1940’s were on the cutting edge of the large electronic calculator research, eventually leading in 1952 to the IBM 701, their first large computer (IBMb, 2011). Also well known for introducing the first successful electric typewriter in the United States in 1935 and the Selectric Typewriter in the 1960’s (Batchelor, 2003), IBM continued to be in the forefront of innovation. As time went on IBM hung on to outdated methods of doing business, such as divisions producing their own parts, acting independently of one another and, in many cases, competing with each other. During 1993, IBM lost $8 billion and was near bankruptcy. Enter Lou Gerstner in 1993. He described the culture at IBM as, “inbred and ingrown” (DiCarlo, 2002). He tied compensation to the companies’ performance rather than by division to instill unity, consolidated divisions creating a culture of teamwork that had not existed at IBM, and eliminated products that were draining the company (DiCarlo, 2002). Through patience, hard work, and an understanding of the need for culture change, Gerstner was able to lead IBM back from the brink of disaster. As such, Oracle made decision to offer the 10th Annual Oracle Scholarship for BDPA Students again this year. The scholarship application period goes through July 15 2018. These scholarships are available to high school students (grade 12), community college students and undergraduate college students. The student must be studying in STEM-related curriculum. The student must be a BDPA member in good standing on or before the July 15th deadline. BDPA student membership is $25 annually. Earl Pace and David Wimberly founded BDPA in November 1975 as a local association. Within three years, the founders grew BDPA into a national organization with chapters in Philadelphia, Washington DC and Cleveland. Today, there are 46 chapters throughout the United States. One part of the BDPA legacy is our program for college students and college campuses. This is a program that enriches the opportunities for our students in a variety of post-secondary education institutions with a focus on low-and moderate-income communities. 31% of BDPA’s membership consists of college students. BDPA understands that its educational life cycle moves from the classroom to the boardroom. A major element of the educational life cycle resides with college students. Annual membership dues for college students are only $25 … a significant savings from the annual membership dues that adult professionals invest in BDPA membership. BDPA established the college student program to teach advanced computer science and community responsibility to students from historically disadvantaged communities. These are major components of our college student program that impact on the educational future of K-12 students: 1. College Scholarships 2. IT Showcase 3. Internships and Entry-Level Jobs in IT Industry 4. Mobile Application Showcase Most of our 46 local BDPA chapters run programs that provide science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) curriculum and experiences for young people of color in community colleges, 4-year colleges and vocational schools. These training programs include a monthly program meeting hosted by each local chapter that provides remarkable information from industry professionals as well as unique networking opportunities that are not replicated anywhere else in the community. BDPA seeks to have more students in college studying STEM-related disciplines. BDPA created the BDPA Education and Technology Foundation (BETF) in 1992 for the purpose of giving college scholarships to deserving high school students. Over 250 college scholarships valued at over $550,000 have been handed out by BDPA and BETF. In addition, BDPA created two programs that feature college students - IT Showcase (2003) and Mobile Application Showcase (2014). BDPA began the process to bridge the ‘digital divide’ before the term was widely known. BDPA recognizes that to close the gap of computer and technology literacy, minority youth must participate and compete in today’s digital economy. The purpose of the Eli Lilly and Company Scholarship for BDPA Students is to recognize outstanding minority students, with an interest in information technology, who make significant contributions to society. Applicants must excel academically, show exceptional leadership potential, and make an impact on their communities through service to others. Lilly/BDPA Scholars will be awarded a one-time $2,500 scholarship that may be used to pursue an information technology focused degree at an accredited four-year college or university of their choice. The Lilly/BDPA scholarship may be used to supplement benefits from the college or university a student plans to attend and fellowships from other foundations or organizations. Students may use the scholarship to cover the cost of tuition, fees, books, room and board, and other college-related expenses. Purpose The Johnson & Johnson Scholarship is intended to provide financial assistance of a matriculated student, rising sophomore or higher enrolled at a 4 year accredited college/university full time. The objective of this scholarship is to support students who are committed to their academic studies and demonstrate evidence of being a good citizen as stated in the Johnson & Johnson Credo. II. Criteria/Eligibility An applicant must be a matriculated student, rising sophomore or higher, enrolled at a 4 year accredited college/university working full time towards their undergraduate degree within the US. The scholarship committee will review completed applications and awards will be made on the basis of the following criteria: • Proven academic performance – minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 • Strong and consistent community involvement • Currently enrolled in a STEM-related major (with emphasis on Info Technology) • Past recipients of this scholarship are not eligible to apply III. Award Description The Johnson & Johnson Scholarship Committee will award $2,500 one-time only scholarships for a rising sophomore or higher of 4 year accredited college or university. IV. Good Evening. I’m sure all of you here know what the Year 2000 problem is so I’m not going to insult you with definitions and explanations. OK? How many of you are technical professionals (analysts, programmers, network administrators, etc..)? How many are entrepreneurs (independent consultants, business owners)? I am going to talk this evening about how the Y2K phenomenon may affect you - opportunities and challenges.
It has been a myth that the Y2K problem has caused corporations to stop spending on IT other than expenditures for fixing the problem. Most expect to spend more not less over the next two years.
There’s been some market analysis done by Intelliquest, an IT industry research group that indicates the Year 2000 may even be a bonus period for some hardware vendors.
So the Y2K may mean new opportunities for some.
In certain industries, spending is modest or flat. The utilities industry is spending slightly more but not necessarily on Y2K projects. They are willing to spend in bitesize chunks for IT projects that move the enterprise forward.
Some predict that a recession is on the horizon.
Spending on this problem has been huge and once the crises has passed, there could be a downturn in the economy due to spending that has not contributed toward corporate strategies for growth and expansion.
And this recession could global.
Some suggest that some businesses could be brought to a halt, at least temporarily. Others, liken it to the recession of the early seventies that was caused by the so called “oil crisis”.
In light of the opportunities and challenges of the Y2K problem, it is wise to look at this period as a time for preparation. It’s a good excuse to get ready.
Have a plan!
Just in case. Be prepared for trouble and make sure your basic needs for food and shelter are addressed. Check into the readiness of your community in the event of a failure in transportation, communications or public safety.
A few simple reminders...
As citizens, you have the right to expect your civic leaders to be as prepared as possible.
You also need to tend to your own hardware and software and make sure that you can function on a personal level when the year 2000 arrives.
As IT leaders in your community, don’t forget your churches, schools and other support organizations.
And of course, make sure you can get to your money. Or at least, have a backup plan.
For the entrepreneurs, there are many business opportunities remaining. You can help small businesses and non-profits prepare or protect themselves from the potential effects of this crisis.
Some new products and innovations are still being developed and released. This one, highlighted on the Black World Today’s web site, was released just this month.
But for the things you can’t fix or predict, it is wise to have a contingency plan.
In planning for business continuity, you really need to anticipate several things going wrong at the same time.
Another important element of Y2K as a catalyst is the transition that is occurring in the job market, triggered by the frenzy of hiring and job shifting taking place for IT professionals. Businesses may become more selective in their hiring practices after the year 2000 crisis is behind them.
Currently there are several areas where employers are struggling to find people. However, will that continue to be the case. My message to you is whether you are a technician, a business owner, a consultant or whatever, the Y2K problem affects you. Be it a change agent, a temporary business spurt, a launching of a new business or service or a new career - you need to be ready. It’s a good excuse for action.
