23. TIKTOK
• Alex Zhu was on a train
pondering why his education-
focused startup had failed. As he
watched teens use their phones
to listen to music while sharing
selfies and videos, he hit upon
his next big idea. This one
was Musical.ly, which merged
with an app from ByteDance to
become the juggernaut that we
know today as TikTok.
• Today Zhu heads TikTok, which
also means he's tasked with
defending it from authorities in
the United States, as they probe
the viral app's Chinese origins.

The Chinese Internet Industry: For years, American internet companies were dominant around the world. That’s no longer as true. The Chinese internet is enormous—and with ByteDance’s TikTok, it’s begun to make inroads into Western markets. As Korean and Japanese internet companies have discovered, beating Western companies on their home turf is hard, but China has cultivated a plausible alternative ecosystem for messaging, social media, and other apps. It’s not WhatsApp or nothing as long as there’s WeChat.
When Jack Ma came up with Alibaba, he wasn’t looking at how to out-compete Amazon, but to provide the consumer with a different experience. If Jack Ma had actually focused on competing with Amazon, his company, Alibaba, would’ve ended up as just another Amazon from Asia.
And here’s what you should understand more. Even before Alibaba came to provide small businesses the means to sell on a global scale, these businesses were already doing fine themselves. So what did Alibaba come to change or do better? It made the process of getting more customers better, cheaper, and faster. Thus, its founder focused on building for the consumer and not to compete with already existing brands.
