Topic:- Technique For Promoting
National Integration
Introduction
“National Integration,” in the words of Dorothy Thompson, “is a feeling that
binds the citizens of a country” .For Preston national integration is “the job to inculcate
knowledge of our country, pride in it ,and respect for the best in our national
environment, aspirations , and tradition , and a wish to improve our country.”
National integration means bringing about economic , social and cultural
differences prevailing among people within tolerable range .It implies doing away with
Inter-state prejudices based on linguistic and cultural differences .It aims at foresting
Increasing respect and affection for those belonging to other cultural and ethic groups .It
consists in saving people from sectional prejudices and prepossessions. It create and
strengthens in term attributes of patriotism and national pride .With the result, basic
loyalties are liberalized and existing antagonisms are minimized .in a nutshell, we can
say that national integration implies a realization of the fact that there can be unity in
diversity. The feeling of overall oneness of the nation result in fostering National
Integration.
National integration aims at unifying the people and not making them conform to
one pattern. Instead of aiming at lifeless uniformity in thought and action , it gives the
progressive realization that there can be similarities among differences . It , in fact ,is a
harmonious and healthy blend of sentiments –resulting in love for the country, feeling of
job in its prosperity and feeling of resentment when danger threatens it.
Role of Education
Education ,properly oriented in respect of the knowledge which it imparts
,the capacity for thinking which it develops ,the training of emotions which it
undertakens, and the practical activities which it organises ,can be a potent
instrument in making the people of the country an integrated nation .It is the
ignorance of the other people ‘s ways of living and thinking ignorance of the
democratic and secular nature of our constitution which strengthen separatist
tendencies ,and it is the function of education tom remove the ignorance.
Education can become an effective laboratory of Indian culture in which not
merely the culture is examined for its maladies and for learning the ways of
continuosly improving the inter-relationship of regional sub-cultures .In order to
bring about national integration in the country, our schools need to make a
deliberate effort to reorient their educational programme. This reorientation is
required under various aspects of school programmes like the aims of education-the
content ,the teaching process, the text books ,the research and so on .
Through content , method and devices , the teacher should try to develop the
following understandings, attributes and skills among the pupils.
(i) National unity is the primary condition of national existence and national
progress. It is an important duty of every citizen in the country to preserve
national unity and promote national integration.
(ii) Our history ,geography ,art ,architecture , culture , literature , and
psychological make –up form a sound basis for national unity and for what we
should have a legitimate pride.
(
(iv) In a plural society with a wide variety of local customs and tradition in
different parts of the country , unity can be achieved on the recognition and
understanding of differences and by giving opportunities for the development of
each section of society.
(v) A feeling that the cooperation and effort of every citizen is essential for
the attainment of the country ‘s ideals enshrined in our constitution e. g
.progressive democracy ,secularism, and the socialistic pattern of society.
(vi) Respect for other individuals and their beliefs , irrespective of the
place of their birth , religion and language need to be developed .
(vii) An understanding to loyalties that one’s own caste , community,
race , religion or region at the cost of the nation stand in the way of national
integration and hold up the country’s progress.
(viii) The country ‘s common problems –problems of literacy,
housing , health, and sanitation , the status of women , the problem of scheduled
castes , economic and political problems etc., which can only be solved by the
unified efforts of the different parts of the country.
(ix) Promotion of social and economic equality and the removal of
regional imbalances are essential for the strengthening national unity.
(x) An appreciation of the steps the country has taken and is taking
towards the attainment of national integration.
Technique for Promoting National Integration
1. Singing of the National Anthem and other patriotic songs. This
technique can go a long way in creating in the mind of young a rightful
pride in their country.
2. Symposia ,debates and discussions on secular nature .Besides
increasing the thinking capacity of the pupils , these will also widen
their mental horizon about the diversification of their country.
3. Stimulating children to read newspaper and books of non communal
nature , throwing light on the contribution +of nationalists .These can
also help in creating national attitude.
4. Acquainting children with the national projects and consequent
progress .This will make them conscious of the greatness of their
country
5. Talks: These may be given to the pupils on the ways of living of
people in different parts of the country so as to create a better
understanding of the country as a whole.
6. Festivals :Those pertaining to different sections of the community may
be celebrated with national outlook. They are the symbols of our
culture heritage and can be exploited to bring home to children the
essential basic unity of the Indian culture and their national
background.
7. The celebration of national days secular festivals : They can also go a
long way in promoting national consciousness .Once the imagination
of the pupils is aroused , and they become emotionally aware of the
significance of such occasions as demonstrations of our cultural
solidarity , the festivals would be increasingly creative of a sense of
community and national coherence.
8. Documentaries and school broadcasts: These can also promote
national consciousness in students by highlighting the synthetical
trend in Indian culture
9. Exhibitions on the life of different people living in different parts
:They can also help as to achieve national integration .
10. Sisterhood programmes: Educational institutions can be helped in
formulating “sister-hood programmes “ among themselves. These
programmes would envisage the visits of selected students of their
institutions on a reciprocal basis and provide opportunities for joint
cultural activities ,which will help them to live down irrational
prejudices arising from narrow considerations of regions and groups.
These contacts will help a lot in promoting cross-cultural
understanding.
11. Scrap books: Students may be encouraged to maintain a scrap book
containing pictures and information about incidents and problems of
different regions and communities .It may include information about
language riots, oppressions on the untouchables, evils of caste system,
etc.
12. Familiarity with the constitution :Students should be made familiar
with the constitution –mainly the Preamble , the Fundamental Rights
which guarantee equality and freedom exploitation those provisions of
the constitution which protect the scheduled castes workers in the
factory ,children and pregnant mothers , and Directive Principles of
State Policy which direct the governments to protect the weaker
sections of society.
13. Display of moral savings: Display of the moral savings of different
religious leaders as Nanak ,Kabir, Vivekanand, Sufi saints and from
different scriptures and religious books on wall magazines or
“Thought for Today” board can also be of great help. The sayings
should be such as are common to a number of religions. As emphasise
the unity of all religions and attack superstition.
CONCLUSION
I conclude in this Assignment, National integration meanse

tolerable range .Unity is a prime necessary for a country such as ours which has a plural
society and suffers from feudal and colonial hangovers .Education can play a vital role

unity in diversity ,legacy of unity ,forces of discord and how to nullify them. Different
techniques like symposia , debates ,discussions. Talks, celebration of national days and
secular festivals .are may be used to promote nationalism among pupils.
