Rapid Participatory Appraisal: Creation of shortlist through
transparent selection process identifying commitment

DEWATS Components
Technical: Customised design considers special conditions of
surrounding areas in (sub-) tropical regions; construction with
local workers and materials [demand responsive]
Social: Composing of Action Plans including beneficiary based
organisations, Operation and Maintenance (O&M) training,
health and hygiene promotion, Health Impact Assessments (HIA)
[participative]
Ecological: Protecting and fostering environment by wastewater
treatment up to 90% without removing ecologically valuable
nutrients (fertilisers) [ecological]
Economical: Multi-source financing (Joint ventures with
government (5-10%), donors (62-84%), NGOs (20-25%) and
beneficiaries (1-3%)) [multi-stakeholder]
Political: Tackling MDG #4 (decrease child mortality), #5
(eradicate malaria/dengue) and #7 ( access to basic sanitation);
remains complementary to other wastewater treatment solution
Leagal: Conforms with international wastewater treatment
standards
