Morris Square
Charleston, South Carolina
Morris Square includes 64 residences, two city parks, a corner open-air piazza and commercial
space. The homes at Morris Square featured a mix of cottages, row houses, condominiums and
standalone houses ranging in size from 900 to 2,000 square feet. They incorporated traditional
design schemes and building materials found elsewhere in downtown Charleston. The commercial
portion of the structures were located within the base flood elevation; therefore, the ground floor
structural system consisted of cast-in-place concrete slab and walls which had to be dry
floodproofed. This included the design of flood shields. The remaining floors of the commercial
building were designed using structural steel frames with cold-formed structural steel studs used as
infill.
