Wait! Play it Safe!
A powerpoint about safety and good sense in the
laboratory!
Rules in the laboratory
 Rules are an important part of any
experiment. You should know them
because they…
 Teach you how to protect yourself, and others from the
hazards in the lab
 Help you prepare and conduct your experiment in a
reliable fashion
 Can save your eyesight, spare you from injury, and
help you act quickly in an emergency.
Before you start…
 Look at your lab area
before you start working.
Make sure it is clean and
uncluttered. (stools)
 Always wear goggles
(Send one person up)
 Think ahead! Wear
closed toed shoes, bring
a hair tie!
 Pay attention to signs
and labels.
 Read and re-read the
procedure. Make sure
you understand.
Working with Chemicals?
 WAFT chemicals, never smell
them directly.
 Make sure you double check
the MSDS (Material safety data
sheet) on any chemicals you
must work with yourself.
 Combine only the reagents
outlined in the lab proceedure.
 If you are combining acid and
water, mix ACID with H20, not
the other way around!
 Consider ALL chemicals dangerous
unless you are told otherwise. (even
water)
 DO NOT dump excess reagents
down the sink, unless your
instructor tells you to. Never put
reagents back in their bottles.
During the experiment…
 Keep your goggles on at ALL times. Your
eyesight is precious and you can’t have it
back. (No contact lenses)
 Don’t eat or drink.
 Only your labsheet or your notebook should
be brought to the experiment table. No
backpacks
 Pick up heated materials using tongs. DO
NOT use rubber tongs near open flame.
 Keep your goggles on at ALL times. Your
eyesight is precious and you can’t have it
back. (No contact lenses)
 Don’t run, jump or roughhouse!
During the experiment, cont’d.
 BE CAREFUL with
the lab equipment.
Don’t put
thermometers or
glass tools out where
they can roll off the
table and break.
 Pick up heated
materials using
tongs. DO NOT use
rubber tongs near
open flame.
 Don’t use flammable
substances near
open flame.
 Do not leave burners
unattended, and be
careful about using
too much gas!
 Don’t point a test
tube at yourself, or a
partner.
 Record your data
immediately. Don’t
wait!
Emergencies!
 Know where the Fire extinguisher is,
and how to use it.
 Know where the eyewash fountain is,
and how to use it!
 Know where the emergency shower
is, and how to use it!
 You MUST tell your instructor in the
case of any injury.
After the Experiment
 Make sure that all substances are
properly disposed of.
 Clean all your glassware carefully and
put it back where you found it.
 The last period should put the
equipment away.
 Clean your work station. Other classes
might be using the same things!
GUESS THAT THINGY!
What’s that?
Beaker
 Used as a holding receptable for
liquids
 Used for pouring
 Used for heating and mixing reagents.
What’s That?

 Used for measuring the volume of a
liquid.
