MANGO AND VEGETABLE
OUT-GROWER SCHEME
PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION REPORT
( A case of Gambia Horticultural Enterprises )
November 2015
We endeavor to build reliable and sustainable fresh and processed
mango and vegetable products mainly for export markets by
integrating small -holders and commercial mango farmers into the
commercial value chain to improve quality and productivity and to
supply export market demands.
Working hand in hand with GGCP and the Mango and Vegetable Out-Growers, A
Matching Grant Facility was developed and is successfully implemented which supports
and equips the Mango and Vegetable Out-Growers with expertise in the production of
safe, quality and profitable business enterprise.
With the increase in production and income generation, the schemes have positive
impacts and would further catalyze involvement of other growers, leading to increase
export earnings for The Gambia.
Together with GGCP, GCAV and the World Bank, GHE contributes to the economic,
intellectual & social developments in the country giving hope to the dreams of coming
generation.

MESSSAGE:
We are grateful for having the opportunities to gain expertise on
advance farming techniques in export quality production
through this Out-Growers Training Programs. This gives us
further opportunity to be able to convert our farms into a
sustainable source of income for our family members, which
over the years has been a dead investment to most of us.
MESSSAGE:
However, we were not able to fully utilize this knowledge and skills by putting
into practice the appropriate management systems, since most of us are not yet
capable to provide the farms inputs requirements.
With this, we are fervently praying that GHE and GGCP will extend their support
programs so that we can be able to equip ourselves and sustain in bringing life
to our farms, to our community, and to our family.

SUMMARY:
GHE is one of two private investors of the World Bank (WB) and Government of
Gambia (GOG) funded, Gambia Growth and Competitiveness Project (GGCP)
Matching Grant Facility (MGF) under 2 Sub-Components known as Mango Out-
Grower Scheme (Window 1) and Vegetable Out-Grower Scheme (Window 2). The
ultimate goal is to build reliable and sustainable fresh and value-added products to
support export market demands.
In the duration of two years of great efforts, GHE successfully realized the objectives
of this programs as described in this report.
In the near future, GHE will enable to further develop and expand the growing,
processing and marketing of wide range of fruits and vegetables (fresh and
processed) thereby, increasing foreign exchange earnings, creating employment
opportunities, food and nutrition security, generating rural incomes and higher living
standards thus contributing to poverty alleviation and meaningful socio-economic and
sustainable development.
The high value horticultural crops thus provides growth and competitiveness for
Gambian agriculture.

MANGO PROJECT ATTAINMENTS, 2015/2014
 Increased export quality production up to 42% ((82-40) kg. Per tree), (range: 75-150)
 Increased over-all mangoes harvested for export for over 253% (+156T / +60T)
 Reduced inputs cost by around 66%. ((30,000-10,000)/30,000 per hectare)
 Reduced the average % rejection by over 30% (45%-15%)
 Increased gross sales up to GMD 81,600 /ha (buying price of middle men, 3,000/ha.)
VEGETABLE PROJECT ATTAINMENTS, 2015/2014
 Increased export quality production up to 400% ((8T-2T) ton per hectare), (range: 10-12)
 Increases production capacity for over 200% (75% time and motion allocated for irrigation)
 Reduced the average % rejection by over 73% (12%-85%)
 Increased gross sales equivalent to GMD 240,000 /ha (8,000 kg X 30.00)
PROGRAM AWARENESS AND REALIZATION, 2014-2015
 Attainment of export volume and quality resulting to the increased productivity and
profitability of small scale farms,
 Fast increase of small scale farmers participation on export production resulting to
fast increase of export volume and quality supply,
 Existence of fast growing workforce in the country
 Demand of sustainable training and capacity building ground in horticulture and
food processing.

PROJECT IMPACT
 Sustainable training and capacity building for out- growers, students and
community,
 Expand service sector with GHE extension worker support every farm,
 Expand market outlets with competitive price for agricultural produce,
 Reduce food losses with minimum of GMD 2,000,000/ year,
 Add value to domestic agriculture raw materials,
 Reduce high import bills (import substitution) and enhance foreign exchange
earnings through increasing domestic exports.
 Employment of 3,000 farmers and factory workers, where +90% woman and youth
involvement,
 Year round 2 tons/day availability of affordable safe and nutritious foods providing
access especially to the children, elderly, pregnant and sick.
 Protect and support cultural significance of traditional agro-food products; wonjo,
ditha, bao-bao, etc.
 Reduce pollution with the reduced rejection waste.

  • 1. GAMBIA GROWTH AND COMPETETIVE PROJECT MANGO AND VEGETABLE OUT-GROWER SCHEME PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION REPORT ( A case of Gambia Horticultural Enterprises ) November 2015
  • 2. We endeavor to build reliable and sustainable fresh and processed mango and vegetable products mainly for export markets by integrating small -holders and commercial mango farmers into the commercial value chain to improve quality and productivity and to supply export market demands. Working hand in hand with GGCP and the Mango and Vegetable Out-Growers, A Matching Grant Facility was developed and is successfully implemented which supports and equips the Mango and Vegetable Out-Growers with expertise in the production of safe, quality and profitable business enterprise. With the increase in production and income generation, the schemes have positive impacts and would further catalyze involvement of other growers, leading to increase export earnings for The Gambia. Together with GGCP, GCAV and the World Bank, GHE contributes to the economic, intellectual & social developments in the country giving hope to the dreams of coming generation. MOMODOU A.   • 3. We are grateful for having the opportunities to gain expertise on advance farming techniques in export quality production through this Out-Growers Training Programs. This gives us further opportunity to be able to convert our farms into a sustainable source of income for our family members, which over the years has been a dead investment to most of us. MESSSAGE: However, we were not able to fully utilize this knowledge and skills by putting into practice the appropriate management systems, since most of us are not yet capable to provide the farms inputs requirements. With this, we are fervently praying that GHE and GGCP will extend their support programs so that we can be able to equip ourselves and sustain in bringing life to our farms, to our community, and to our family. SUMMARY: GHE is one of two private investors of the World Bank (WB) and Government of Gambia (GOG) funded, Gambia Growth and Competitiveness Project (GGCP) Matching Grant Facility (MGF) under 2 Sub-Components known as Mango Out- Grower Scheme (Window 1) and Vegetable Out-Grower Scheme (Window 2). The ultimate goal is to build reliable and sustainable fresh and value-added products to support export market demands. In the duration of two years of great efforts, GHE successfully realized the objectives of this programs as described in this report. In the near future, GHE will enable to further develop and expand the growing, processing and marketing of wide range of fruits and vegetables (fresh and processed) thereby, increasing foreign exchange earnings, creating employment opportunities, food and nutrition security, generating rural incomes and higher living standards thus contributing to poverty alleviation and meaningful socio-economic and sustainable development. The high value horticultural crops thus provides growth and competitiveness for Gambian agriculture.

  • 8. TECHNOLOGY BUILDING Building the capacity of smallholder farmers in export volume and quality production and transformed their orchards and gardens into commercial farms operational with tools, equipments, facilities and agro- chemicals.

  • 12. MANGO PROJECT ATTAINMENTS, 2015/2014  Increased export quality production up to 42% ((82-40) kg. Per tree), (range: 75-150)  Increased over-all mangoes harvested for export for over 253% (+156T / +60T)  Reduced inputs cost by around 66%. ((30,000-10,000)/30,000 per hectare)  Reduced the average % rejection by over 30% (45%-15%)  Increased gross sales up to GMD 81,600 /ha (buying price of middle men, 3,000/ha.) VEGETABLE PROJECT ATTAINMENTS, 2015/2014  Increased export quality production up to 400% ((8T-2T) ton per hectare), (range: 10-12)  Increases production capacity for over 200% (75% time and motion allocated for irrigation)  Reduced the average % rejection by over 73% (12%-85%)  Increased gross sales equivalent to GMD 240,000 /ha (8,000 kg X 30.00)

PROJECT IMPACT  Sustainable training and capacity building for out- growers, students and community,  Expand service sector with GHE extension worker support every farm,  Expand market outlets with competitive price for agricultural produce,  Reduce food losses with minimum of GMD 2,000,000/ year,  Add value to domestic agriculture raw materials,  Reduce high import bills (import substitution) and enhance foreign exchange earnings through increasing domestic exports.  Employment of 3,000 farmers and factory workers, where +90% woman and youth involvement,  Year round 2 tons/day availability of affordable safe and nutritious foods providing access especially to the children, elderly, pregnant and sick.  Protect and support cultural significance of traditional agro-food products; wonjo, ditha, bao-bao, etc.  Reduce pollution with the reduced rejection waste.
