4. Operating Environment
In a typical Manufacturing set up, utilities such as steam, water, chilled water and compressed air are not just required
for the production areas, but also other associated areas such as other business support utilities (e.g. Power
Generation). These services are not provided by the government and are generated in-house
In a drive for high efficiencies (e.g. Global Efficiency and Overall Equipment Effectiveness) by the production teams,
reliable supply of utilities is critical as it contributes to the achievement of rated throughput of production equipment
and also has a role to play in guaranteeing product quality and food safety.
Capacity headroom is not always available for all the service equipment; maintaining the equipment in an environment
of tight production schedules is often quite challenging.
The majority of Nigerian consumers are very price sensitive, and it is therefore important that the generation of all
utilities is done efficiently in order to minimise the contribution to the cost profile of the organisation’s products. There
is also constant pressure on the operating budget of the team, meaning that it is not always possible to execute all the
plans on the wish list of the team. CAPEX budgets are also under similar constraints.
One must often face the challenge of balancing demands from regular work activities with the demands of executing
CAPEX projects
The generation of the utilities must also be done in a green way, i.e. it must have a minimal negative impact on the
environment. Ensuring that Waste Water Treatment Plant runs reliably is therefore high on the priority agenda of the
team.
By nature, the operation of some of the equipment (e.g. steam generating equipment) can be dangerous to operate if
safety protocols are not strictly adhered to. This brings activities of the team constantly under the close scrutiny of the
site EHS team, regional/global company EHS officials, and local regulatory officials.
The pressures from demanding end-users can take its toll. It is therefore important that an enabling environment that
facilitates the achievement of these demands is provided by setting high standards, motivating team members and
aligning their individual objectives to that of the organisation.
