11week training under8_9
1. BALMAIN DFC 10 WEEK TRAINING PROGRAM
Week 1 - Under 8 & 9 Years Training session structure
The following would be the framework for a typical 1-hour or 1.5 hrs training session.
Games 1, 2 & 3 should be run concurrently; each game should be lead by the “Head
Coach” and have “assistant coaches” allocated to helping in each game both in its setup
and monitoring.
Game 1 Technique Games - Developing passing, receiving, control and dribbling
skills
Games 2 & 3 Technical & Tactical Games – 2 variations of Small Sided Games - 2v2 or
3v3 developing their attack and defensive skills
Game 4 & 5 The Game – a Match with age related and standard Association rules
applying the skills developed from above stages. This Game should be run
as a standard 4 versus 4 format as played on your weekend match. We
understand that most teams roster a House of up to 16 players, therefore to
maximise a players participation and development, ensure 2 standard
games are running simultaneously. No Under 6 & 7 games should be
played with more than 4 per side.

2. WEEK 1 – UNDER 8 & 9 YEARS
Players
2 – 4 players.
Play Area
10 - 15m length, 5m width
Setup
4 cones, 1 ball per 2 players
Objective
Game 1 - Pass, Receive & dribble (10 Minutes)
Start with two players utilising the width of the game area. On coach’s signal
the two players pass and receive the ball (at least three times) whilst dribbling
the length of the game area. At the end cones swiftly turn and repeat passing
and receiving. When near the start point play a pass to one of the waiting
players for them to then proceed in the same fashion. Repeat a number of
times. Encourage players to pass the ball a short distance in front of their team-mates.
Organise a challenge between the concurrent teams. First team to complete
four lengths of the complete course wins (each pair gets two turns). Note,
each team must successfully complete 3 passes per length of the course or be
disqualified.
Variation 1
A variation of above game, encourage teamwork with accurate and timed
passes in one-two combination play. Line 2 cones in the centre of the game
area to suggest defenders that you wish to beat with a quick 1-2 passing
combination, the first cone at 5m and second at 10m. On coach’s signal, 2
players begin their run and pass diagonally between the cones. When
reaching the end cones swiftly turn and attack with speed passing and
receiving until back to the starting point.

Objective
Game 2 - Pass, Receive & dribble (10 Minutes)
Two players from different corners dribble the ball from diagonally opposed
positions to the centre of the playing area. Once they reach the centre, they
pass the ball on the run toward a team-mate waiting behind the goal on the
right side. Then it is the receiver’s turn to dribble and pass the ball from the
centre of the playing area through the goal on his or her right side. Play the
game until the coach observes confidence in their play.
Variation 1
As above game, pass the ball to the left side.
Variation 2
As above game, increase the players speed

2 ( and/or multiple concurrent sessions)
Play Area
8m length, 8m width
Setup
4 cones, 1 ball
Objective
Game 3 - Attack Defence 1 v 1 (10 Minutes)
Two players standing in the centre 2m apart of the playing area, one player
has possession of the ball. The aim of the game is for the defender to win the
ball using delaying tactics and timing his or her tackle. The attacker will
attempt to dribble the ball past the defender to the opposing 8m goal-line.
Coaches will encourage the defenders to focus on the ball and body
movement of the attacker. Switch playing roles when goal is scored by
dribbling and controlling the ball over the goal-line or when defender
dispossesses the attacker and has ball under his or her control. Regularly
switch playing partners.
Encourage… Defenders to “steal” the ball for their own possession rather than kick it away.
Variation 1
Possession 1 V 1 Challenge the players to shield the ball from their defender
for as long as they can. They must stay inside the designated area. Switch
playing roles and partners regularly.
Variation 2 Possession 1 v 2 Add a second defender to add more pressure on the player
in possession. Stress the importance of staying calm to the player in possession
as they try to out-think their opponents. Swap roles regularly.

Game 4 - The Possession Game (10 Minutes)
As the name indicates possession is priority in this game. Teams in possession
are encouraged to pass the ball in any direction as many times to each other
without losing possession of the ball. Defenders will make the oppositions
passing game difficult and attempt to win the ball to gain possession for their
own team.
we encourage free play and emphasis the development of teamwork
between the teams and allow the players to learn and express themselves,
minimal instructions from coaches but please encourage shorter passing and
no booting or clearing it. Emphasise that there is no “direction” in which each
team must play. Team must stay within the game area and should the ball go
out, the ball is played in with a short kick-in by the other team. Team that
successfully completes three passes receives a point. If the team is quite
proficient you can increase the difficulty to five passes.
Coaches should observe the game and commend players in possession for
protecting the ball, looking up for passing options, getting into spaces to
receive the ball & completed passes. Commend defending team for
anticipating passes, clean dispossessions of the ball. Discourage “panic”
actions such as kicking the ball into the shins of an approaching defender. At
the end of the session make an assessment of the game emphasising the
positives.

Setup
4 cones in a square
Objective
Pass & Switch
Player 1 passes the ball horizontally (but slightly forward) to player 2, who then dribbles
diagonally back across the playing area whilst player 1 runs behind the dribbler to the
opposite side and receives a return pass. Player 1 then dribbles to the end line. The
players start the same process going in the opposite direction. Therefore in this
variation players are always passing left to right. Repeat until you (the coach) observe
confidence in their play.
Variation 1
As above but passing from right to left. Encourage greater speed and the use of both
feet.

Players
Team
Play Area
9m x 4m
Setup
10 cones – 2 lines of 3 cones setup 2m apart and 3m dividing the 2 lines of
cones. On each playing area ends are 2m goals setup approximately 3m
away. (Confused? See diagram below) 1 ball per player. Game 1 will run for
approx 10 – 15 minutes
Objective
Game 1: Beat the defender and “pass” through the goals.
The players from opposite ends dribble a ball toward their first central cone
(representing a defender). As player nears “the defender”, the player must
carry out a quick turn or drag of the ball to “beat the defender” and repeat
this for the subsequent “defenders”. After beating the 4th defender the player
now lines the ball up for a pass through the goal. The player continues past
(around) the goals and retrieves the ball and gets ready to continue from the
opposite side of the circuit. Before any variation, play the game until you
observe confidence in their play. Encourage the players to practice moves
such as feints, step-overs or other dribbling techniques to pass the defender.
After a few runs through encourage the players to increase their speed.
Tip: To avoid excessive standing around, get the next player in the queue to
start once the preceding player has reached the second defender (cone).
Variation 1
The Challenge
As above game, spilt the players into two teams and place them on opposite
ends. The first challenge is for the teams to complete the course and all have
their footballs “under control” in their goalmouth in the fastest time. Second
and subsequent players in the team only start once the first player has
controlled the ball in the goalmouth. Repeat as necessary.

2 – 3 players, depending on team numbers, run sessions side-by-side.
Play Area
6m x 6m
Setup
4 cones, Setup two goals 1m wide with a 4m gap between the two goals (as
illustrated), 1 ball. Game 1 will run for approx 10 – 15 minutes
Objective
Game 1: Side to Side Dribbling, Movement & Accurate Passing / Receiving
This game teaches the basics principles of Pass, Move & Support the player with the
ball.
To start, a player will dribble level with the goal cones and pass the ball through the
cones at a distance of 6 metres to other Player. Now he / she receives the ball behind
the goal and then dribbles back to the other cone goals and passes along the other
side where the other player will receive the ball again. Have the player continue this
exercise until you see confidence in their abilities. Vary the speed, direction, technique
or ask players to use their weaker foot. Further motivate the players by seeing which
group can complete 10 goals first.
Variation 1
As above setup and now three players. In this game, the players will circle the game
area instead of side to side movements. So the side with 2 players will begin with
player 1 dribbling and then passing through the goal cones to player 2 on the other
side. The receiver - player 2, dribbles to the next corner and passes through the goal
cones to the player 3. To continue the circular movement, after each pass, the passer
will run and follow the direction of the ball and takes the place of the last receiver.
Coaches should vary speed, direction, technique or ask players to use their weaker
foot.

21. WEEK 5 – Under 8 & 9 Years Training Session Structure
Players
5
Play Area
8m x 8m
Setup
8 cones, setup play area as a Small Sided Game, goals are 2m, one ball. Games 1 &
2 should run side-by-side and concurrently for up to 30 minutes and players rotated
through the games after about 15 minutes.
Objective
Game 1 - Fast Attack 3 V 2 (Under 9’s only can field Goal-Keepers 3 V 4)
Create two teams – one with 3 attackers, the other 2 defenders. For Under 9s play 3
attackers, 2 Sweepers, and 2 Goal-keepers. The 3 attackers start with the ball on a
goal-line and start with a build-up attack. The attackers will try to beat the defender –
who is positioned in their half and protecting their goal zone, and score. The attack is
to be played at speed and shots on goal can only be taken when all attackers have
touched the ball at least once. The direction of the attack can be switched towards
either goal at any time, allowing the attackers to determine the best option to attack.
Restarts will begin with a kick-in from where the ball went out of play. When a goal is
scored restart occurs 2m to the left or right of the goal mouth. Build-up attacks are
encouraged, no speculative kicks. Ensure all players switch their playing roles.
The defenders must do everything possible to delay the attackers and thwart the
attempts at scoring. If a defender wins the ball, the defenders begin their own
possession based “attack” – they need to maintain possession with the other
defender(s) via dribbling or passing for as long as possible. All defenders need to be
“involved” even if the direction of the attack is not towards them; they must always
anticipate and be prepared for a possible change in direction. No defender must
enter the other half of the field; they must only defend in their own half.
Encourage… • Close ball control
• Fast, short accurate passing
• Maintaining possession is priority
• Find space
• Regularly looking up
• Intelligent off the ball movement and support – suggest triangular formations
• Defenders to analyse/assess the game from both playing ends, use delay and
blocking tactics and to time their attempts to win the ball accurately.
Variations As above game, add further pressure by adding a box-to-box defender (you as
coach may have to take one of the roles), roaming and challenging every move the
attackers make. The playing roles are switched immediately when possession is won
eg, defenders become attackers.

a much smaller area is fine).
Setup:
4 cones to mark-out field. 1 Ball per game. Games 1 & 2 should run side-by-side and
concurrently for up to 30 minutes and players rotated through the games after about 15
minutes.
Objective 1:
Game 2 - Maintain Possession Game
As the name indicates possession is priority in this game. The team in possession is
encouraged to pass the ball in any direction as many times to each other without
losing possession of the ball. The other team will make the opposition’s passing game
difficult and attempt to win the ball to gain possession for their team.
The purpose of this game is to encourage players to consider playing the ball
backwards and sideways rather than constantly forwards when they are playing their
regular game. This is the way modern football is played and it allows teams to reduce
pressure on their own players and maintain possession whilst probing the opposing
defence for gaps that will lead to goal scoring opportunities. A step or two back really
can be the best way to go forward!
Initially we encourage free play between the teams (i.e. we don’t limit the number of
touches a player may have before passing) and encourage the players to experiment
and to creatively express themselves. Restrictions such as “two-touch” can be
introduced to further challenge the players. Minimal instructions from coaches but
please encourage shorter passing and no booting or clearing it (if someone “hoofs” it
away, make them get the ball). Emphasise that there is no “direction” in which each
team must play. Teams must stay within the game area and should the ball go out,
the ball is played in with a short kick-in by the other team. The team that successfully
completes three passes receives a point. If either of your teams is quite proficient you
can increase the difficulty to five passes for that team.
Coaches should observe the game and commend players in possession for protecting
the ball, looking up for passing options, getting into spaces to receive the ball and
completed passes. Commend the defending team for anticipating passes, clean
dispossessions of the ball. Discourage “panic” actions such as kicking the ball into the
shins of an approaching defender. At the end of the session make an assessment of
the game emphasising the positives.

5 – consider concurrent games.
Play Area

Setup
5 cones as illustrated, 1 ball. Stopwatch (optional for Variation 1) Games 1 & 2 should
run side-by-side and concurrently for up to 30 - 40 minutes and players rotated through
the games after about 15 - 20 minutes.
Objective
Game 1 - Pentagon Pass
5 players each positioned at a cone one player with a ball. Start with the players
simply passing the ball around the Pentagon regularly changing the direction in which
they are to pass. Get them to experiment with various techniques – stopping the ball
on one foot and passing with the other, first time pass etc. Ensure that they keep the
ball outside the pentagon.
Encourage…
• Good positioning of the body (get behind the ball) when receiving
• Good ball control
• Accurate passing to team-mates
• Sharp turning abilities (ask them to try different methods – underside of the foot,
inside of the foot, outside of the foot
• Regularly looking up. Important that they don’t always look at their feet.
Variation 1
Add a second ball. Give a second ball to a player two or three cones along from the
first. This will keep the players focussed and in anticipation for a pass every few
seconds.
Variation 2
Beat the clock – having established approximately how long it takes them to complete
a number of rotations challenge them to better their time. Restart the game if the ball
enters the pentagon. Try this in both directions.
Variation 3 Hexagon Passing Challenge. With two or more concurrent sessions have a race and
see which team can successfully complete five circuits first. Repeat in both directions.
Consider adding a second ball per team to this challenge too!

Objective
Game 2 – Attack / Defend – 2 V 3 V1 (Under 9’s only can field Goal-Keepers)
Create two teams – one with 3 attackers, the other 3 defenders. The 3 attackers start
with the ball on a goal-line and start with a build-up attack. The attackers will try to
beat the defender(s) – who are positioned in their half and protecting their goal zone,
and score. Encourage the attack to be played at speed and shots on goal can only
be taken when all attackers have touched the ball at least once. The direction of the
attack can be switched towards either goal at any time, allowing the attackers to
determine the best option to attack.
Restarts will begin with a kick-in from where the ball went out of play. When a goal is
scored restart occurs 2m to the left or right of the goal mouth. Build-up attacks are
encouraged, no speculative kicks or long balls. Ensure all players switch their playing
roles.
The defenders must do everything possible to delay the attackers and thwart the
attempts at scoring. If a defender wins the ball, the defenders begin their own
possession based “attack” – they need to maintain possession with the other
defender(s) via dribbling or passing for as long as possible to score points - 3 passes =
1 point. All defenders need to be “involved” even if the direction of the attack is not
towards them; they must always anticipate and be prepared for a possible change in
direction. No defender must enter the other half of the field; they must only defend in
their own half.

Games starts with Two players in opposite corners - each with a ball and two players in
the centre of the game area. At the same time, the two players with the ball start to
dribble in & out of the cones until they reach the last cone. From the last cone the
players dribbling will pass the ball to their team-mates in the centre and then sprint to
the other cones and receive the ball back, (as a combination play 1 – 2 pass). Each
player dribbling should complete the course twice and swap roles with team-mate.

concurrently for up to 30 minutes and players rotated through the games after about
15-20 minutes.
Objective
Game 1 - Triangular passing
This game has many variations and it’s a great game for young players to improve
their first touch and develop their passing, receiving, positioning technique. Firstly start
with 3 players posted at each cone and one player in possession of the ball. On
coach’s signal, the ball is passed, say clockwise, to the next player, who then controls
the ball around the cone and then continues the passing back to the starting point.
Coaches will encourage anticipation and movement around the cones with players
producing a good first touch and accurate passing with the ball travelling on the
outside of the triangle only. Vary the speed as players build their confidence.
Variation 1 & 2 Variation 3
Variation 1
As above game, players centre themselves between each side of triangle of cones.
With the ball being passed in all directions, the players will be encouraged to
constantly move, support, receive and communicate between their cones. Intensify
the game with one touch and vary the speed.
Variation 2
As Variation 1, The players must “pass and move” to where he/she has directed the
ball to. The player who receives the ball must do the same before other player arrives.
This is perfect game to encourage players to “Go To The Ball” when receiving.
Intensify the game with one touch and vary the speed.
Variation 3
As Variation 1 or 2, introduce a defender. The defender will stay in side the triangular
and pressure the attackers to make mistakes. Attackers are awarded 1 point by
making 5 successful passes. Should the defender win the ball, the roles are switched
with the player who lost possession. Intensify the game with one touch and vary the
speed.

Objective
Game 1 - Dribble & Pass Challenge
This is a variation on an earlier drill but we’ve added some cones for the teams to
dribble through. Two teams of two or three are stationed at their opposing start/finish
points. Specify the direction of the game – clockwise or anticlockwise, and how many
circuits are to be completed – 2 each, 4 each etc. The race begins with the lead
players in each team completing the first turn by dribbling their ball in & out of four
cones and then across to the next four cones and then passing a short ball to their
team-mate waiting who receives the ball between start/finish point and their first
cone/corner, who then repeats the course (see diagram). The first team that
completes the specified number of circuits is the winner. Repeat and change
direction often – this will force the players to pass with their less-favoured foot and to
corner in both directions. The drill covers: receiving the ball at speed, dribbling in
confined and open spaces, cornering and passing … at speed.
Teams are disqualified and the game is restarted if:
• They intrude into the central course whilst dribbling the ball or running back
• They hit one of the cones – the game is designed to encourage speed and
accuracy so it is only fair …
• A bad pass to a team-mate
Encourage… • The players to experiment with different control and cornering techniques to
establish which is fastest for them - they’ll probably have to use several
depending on how in control or otherwise they are at different stages. Eg
using inside / outside / sole of left or right foot to direct the ball.
• Positioning of the their body when they receive the ball
• Speed and acceleration – it’s a race!

Objective
Game 1 - Guard the Tower
This drill is a great game that focuses on passing in numbers and maintaining
possession.
Organise the teams with three attackers and one defender who will be the Guard of
the Tower. Take a ball and place it on the top of a disc/cone in the middle of the
game area, this will become the “Tower”.
The objective of this game is for the three attackers to pass the ball around the
defender in an attempt to knock down the tower with a pass. Defender stops any
attempt to knock down tower.
Remember to change playing roles.
Encourage… Instruct players to get their heads up to find the pass.

Objective
Game 1 – 2 Passes and Shoot
Accurate shooting and passing takes regular practice. This is a useful way of
organising a group for repetitive shooting/passing practice – what kid does not like
shooting at goal? Form two teams of three situated in their designated half of the
player area. The game will be played like a volley ball match (without a net) where
two passes will be constructed with the third being a shot on goal or end-line. This
game will encourage basic team passing and build-up play from the defence. The
game begins with 1 player passing (along the ground) from the goal-line to a team-mate.
The receiver then passes the ball to the third player who will then go on to
shoot in an effort to get across the opposing end-line. The build-up play is only played
in a team’s own half. The other team (Defending) will endeavour to shut down and
block their attack and stop the ball from crossing their end line.
Coaches should demonstrate good shooting or passing technique and also need for
having a look at the target on the run up, and the importance of accuracy before
power. Coaches should also encourage defenders to read the game well and
anticipate the attacking team movement and where the ball “may” go,
Encourage… Good technique – pass / shot

cones (encourage both feet) and a shot on goal. Second drill is “one – two” passing &
moving between the cones and shot on goal. When a player completes a drill they
move to next drill - keep the practice moving and dynamic.
Encourage: • High Level of ball technique – firm good passing, controlling using both feet,
close ball control
• Knowing when best to play the ball to a team-mate
• Awareness of the game and good communication with team-mate
• Vary speed of runs with and without ball.
• Observe the goalkeepers position and goal area before shooting.
• Ask players to focus on the ball when shooting and aware (develop) of their
own technique.

Play Area
20m x 20m or larger if space is available. Make do with what you have!
Setup
6 cones setup as illustrated with standard goals say 3 – 5m apart.
Objective
Improve Attack / Shooting - Game 2
This game involves two players in a quick combo play and shot. Run the same drill on
opposite sides of the game area to ensure continuous play. Also start the drill from
right to left with players using their right foot to control and shoot then switch to left to
right with player using left foot.
Player 2 receives a pass and turns the ball goal side from player 1. Player 1 sprints to
receive an angled pass from player 2. Player 1 then takes shot on goal. After the
shot, player 1 now switches roles with player 2 and player 2 lines up with other team-mates
behind the goals. Keep the practice moving and dynamic.
Once players are confident with this style of play, Intensify the game by introducing a
defender. The defender will stand two metres inline with goals and will attempt to
deny the attacker a clear shot on goal and / or win the ball. The defender must
come into play once attackers reach the cone at player 2.

Improve Attack / Shooting - Game 3
This game involves two players in a fast 1 v 1 play and shot. Goals are setup on both
sides of game area to alternate the direction of play when one direction of play is
complete.
Player 1 hits a long ball to Player 2 who runs out and “anticipates” an attack. Player 1
now the defender sprints out to defend the goals. With limited time, player 2 dribbles
the ball and shoots at goals before defender can block the shot. Ensure attack /
defend roles, plus direction of play switched. Keep the practice moving and dynamic.
Once players are confident with this style of play, Intensify the game by introducing a
second defender. The defenders will stand two metres either side of their goals and
will attempt to deny the attacker a clear shot on goal and / or win the ball. The
defender must come into play once attacker receives the ball.

Game 4 - The Standard Game
This game will be played with your clubs standard competition age related rules and
formats that has been emailed to you by your Age Coordinator. Please refer to this
document and become familiar with these rules.
To complement this game, the clubs philosophy should also be referenced.
We encourage free play and emphasis the development of teamwork between the
teams and allow the players to learn and express themselves, minimal instructions from
coaches but please encourage shorter passing and no booting or clearing it. Team
must stay within the game area and should the ball go out, the ball is played in with a
short kick-in by the other team. When a goal is scored, the team that conceded a
goal will recommence from the centre of the pitch.
Coaches should observe the game and commend players in possession for protecting
the ball, looking up for passing options, getting into spaces to receive the ball and
completed passes. Commend defending team for anticipating passes, clean
dispossessions of the ball. Discourage “panic” actions such as kicking the ball into the
shins of an approaching defender.
