Consider why you decided to be involved
in the NISO forum today and yesterday….
• Is it about the specific topic of discovery?
− Learning/discussing
• Or are your interests/goals larger?
- Being part of the dialog to move things forward
5. | www.ebsco.com5
What Makes this Gathering Unique?
• A diverse group of people representing various
viewpoints, ideas and needs
• The entity (NISO) to see the ideas and needs
come to fruition through standardization and
recommended practices
• Taking critical ideas and streamlining into
common lanes so we can move as a
community (faster, better)

The Larger Role of NISO
Developing Standards and Recommended
Practices…yes, of course…..but, not just
reacting/responding:
− Getting out in front of issues
− Uncovering the needs and goals of the library
community through multi-dimensional perspectives
− A conduit for thought leadership

What is D2D exactly?
As part of NISO's organizational structure, topic committees that bring together leaders in
specific subjects have been created to provide direction to the organization for standards
development in those umbrella topic areas. D2D Topic Committee focuses on issues
regarding the finding and distribution of information by and to users, including OpenURL,
Metasearch, interface design, web services, etc.
• Track standards development within NISO & in other standards organizations related to
the topic.
• Identify where new standards may provide solutions in their specific area.
• Convene Thought Leader meetings to incubate new standards activities.
• Create and provide guidance and oversight to standards working groups under
their purview.
• Manage the five-year reaffirmation process for approved standards.

Perhaps D2D is ultimately focused
on the library user; enhancing the
value of the library in light of that
ultimate “customer”
Experience
Access
Usage
Integrations

And what needs to happen up-stream to
reach greater levels for user interaction
with the library and its resources
• Identification of roadblocks
• Identification of potential solutions
• Enabling greater community visibility
• Facilitating vendor partnerships toward greater
community goals

But D2D is only as strong as
the community contributing
ideas and taking part to turn
ideas into real progress.
ACTIONABLE ITEMS

Marshall’s White Paper: This is great
Example of pro-active exploration around
topics of larger community interest
Paper leads to discussions/deeper ideas,
which may turn into:
− Specific projects
− potential working groups
− potential standards

Your voice matters – whether you are on a
committee or not
• This is essentially why we are gathering in
Baltimore
• Facilitate discussions
• Hone in on items of greatest interest/concern
17. | www.ebsco.com17
But when this
meeting concludes,
then what?
How do we move things forward?
How do we turn ideas into real progress?

What can you do specifically to affect change?
• Be proactive about participating, consider:
− What resonated with you from these discussions?
− What wasn’t discussed that you would like to bring to
the forefront?

What can you do specifically to affect change?
• It’s easy to submit ideas for consideration
• All ideas treated equally
• When they are approved, you are not alone
• Build out working groups to move topics forward
• “Many hands make light work”
