3. HOW CAN WE
Empower communities with:
• Open source software
• Open source hardware
• Open design
• Digital maker practices
4. Communities are able to:
• Build their own sensors
• Make sense of their environment
• Address pressing issues in air,
water, soil and sound pollution
SO THAT…
5. Technology issues
& lack of skills
Data accuracy
& meaningfulness
How do we bridge the
knowledge / skills gap
How do we measure accurate
data and co-design intelligible,
actionable, visualisations
Lack of purpose
How do we galvanise
emergent communities
around pressing issues
Community capital
How do we foster sustained
community engagement
#MakingSenseEU
WHATARE WE LOOKING TO TACKLE?
6. The Making Sense team will follow a process of mapping issues and
emergent communities of interest to engage and develop nine participatory
sensing interventions across Barcelona, Amsterdam and Prishtina
THE PILOTS…

7. URBAN AIRQ
Tackling the most polluted
streets in Amsterdam
The Dutch environmental defense organisation found that
the Valkenburgerstraat and the Weesperstraat in the heart
of Amsterdam are the most polluted streets of the city.
We want to know more about the situation in this part of the
city and will measure the air quality with the locals.

Young people investigating air
pollution in Kosovo.
Kosovo is one of the most polluted regions in Europe.
The Science for Change Kosovo Movement is empowering
young people and affected communities and jointly break
the institutional silence around the air pollution in Kosovo
through evidence-based campaigns and actions.
9. SMART KIDS
LAB
Children and their parents
learning about the possibilities
sensing, in an active way.
The Smart Kids Lab makes it possible for children to map their
environment in a playful way, by using modern technology and
instruments. With the aid of small scale tests and self-made
sensors they can hands-on monitor their direct surroundings
at home, or at school.

Exploring analogue and digital
sensing, to better build bird
feeders
The Making Sense Barcelona team collaborated with a group
of 15 students aged 9-14 years old to explore the potential of
both analogue and digital sensing to provide a clearer picture
of how pollution can affect local bird species.

Infrastructuring the next
generation of activists
The Barcelona pilot trains a committed group of
environmental activists in the tools and methodologies
needed to conduct participatory sensing campaigns.
The first pilot will map and address the issue
of noise pollution, and collective resources.
