The document discusses editing a short film using Premiere Pro. It describes importing clips, cutting parts that weren't needed, adding title screens, and dragging clips to the timeline. Effects like dissolves and fades were added to smoothly transition clips. Non-copyright music was downloaded from YouTube and added to the soundtrack. The film was edited to be 2 minutes and 47 seconds and follow the storyboard. Once complete, the film was rendered and exported as a viewable video file to upload to YouTube.

Learning Premiere Pro through editing a short film
1. Unit 6: Learning Aim B - Editing
For my short film, I decided to edit it on Premiere Pro however to provide evidence to visually
show this, I am unable too due to technical difficulties and the current pandemic and lockdown.
When using Premiere Pro, I was learning at the same time as I had just used it once and that
was using the core basics of it - importing files, cutting clips, adding title screens etc therefore
when editing the film, I was learning new skills by reading through help sheets and watching
tutorials.
C1 Editing (Image)
For the short film, we had to make sure that the running time was around 3-5 minutes as that
was the specified running time written in the project sheet. My short film was edited at 2 minutes
47 seconds which was allowed due to the lockdown rules of staying home and distanced away
from people therefore we were unable to film extra clips as well as refilming some. When editing
the clips together in the sequence section, I tried to follow my storyboard which I completed in
the pre-production section of the unit so that there was continuity in the film and scenes were
not everywhere. By doing this, it meant that the story will be straightforward and easy for the
audience to understand rather than being non-chronological and confusing to watch. In addition
to this, it also allowed me to move through my shot variation and make sure to use the correct
editing sequences. To add the clips into the sequence workplace, I had to import the clips into
the project planner and then drag and drop the clips I want to use into the sequence workspace.
To edit the clips, I used the razor tool to cut down parts of the scenes which I didn't want to use,
I selected a clip and dragged it to the time frame where I wanted it. This was useful as I was
able to add clips in before or after editing without it interrupting the sequence or obstructing
anything, therefore this was very effective. In between scenes I added title menus to separate
the clips. I did this by clicking file at the top left of the screen and then hovered my mouse over
new so that it would come up with options to click on and then I clicked on ‘Legacy Title’ which
brought up a menu which allowed me to create a title menu, change the font center the title on
the scene. In terms of effects, I decided to add them in last because the clips were in the correct
place and I was able to make the clips transition into each other smoothly. I decided to add in
effects so that it made the film seem more realistic and add suspense for the thriller genre. The
effects I added were, dissolves, fades and cuts for the clips to smoothly transition into one
another.
Editing (Sound)
In terms of audio for the film, I went on YouTube to find a non-copyright soundtrack to put over
my film as the film itself was non-diegetic therefore the only sound important was the backing
music. Once I had found the right audio, I needed to download it onto my laptop to then insert
into Premiere Pro over my editing sequence. To insert the audio into the sequence, I then
dragged and dropped it into the sequence log in A2. After I added the audio, I started to add the
clips onto the sequence log. To do this, I had to drag and drop my clip onto the sequence, click
on the clip and then unlink it with the audio so that it wouldn’t interfere with the backing music.
Once I unlinked the audio from the clip, I then had to click on the audio which was from the clip
and delete it. I decided to add the audio in first when I started editing so that I was able to fade
scenes out as the audio faded, use cut to the beat to add suspense and effect to the film. The
2. sound that I used was more likely to be used in a horror film but I thought that I would go against
this typical code and convention and do it differently to grab the audience's attention as well as
the publics and gather a wider range of audience with different demographics.
C2 Generic Conventions
One way in which you are able to tell that my film is a thriller is by the audio. I have used a
soundtrack for my film as the film is non-diegetic therefore the characters are unable to hear any
sound. The soundtrack is familiar with the horror genre but I believe that horror and thrillers are
very similar therefore I didn’t think that it really mattered as it is gathering the audience's
attention at the same time. The audio speeds up to a quick pace as it plays and it also includes
some eerie tones and beats which I was able to manipulate and create cut to beat scenes. By
doing this it set the mood for the thriller genre as the audience will be on the edge of their seats
and wondering what exactly is going to happen next. In addition to this, I also used stylistic
codes to support the narrative, for example: mise-en-scene as the enigma/villain wears dark
colours, there is blood an weapons shown in the film, there is a scene in the film where it is low-
key lighting where the villain drops his weapon to foreshadow the deaths at the end and one of
the settings include a pathway which is surrounded by trees, bushes etc. I think that I was
somewhat successful in creating a thriller due to the chosen locations, mise-en-scene used and
the narrative which is seen as a typical narrative for both thrillers and horrors. To be more
successful next time, I would include more low-key lighting to add suspense to the narrative and
characters, change the narrative around so that it makes much more sense rather than it being
a bullying film and then the storyline being turned around onto the two bullies and show a small
amount of violence so the audience are clearly aware of where the blood has come from exactly
instead of there being a random ending clip of blood dripping.
C3 Music, Sound Effects and Titles
By adding in the title scenes in the short film it allowed me to engage with the audience as I
provided them with key information about the film, for example the names of cast members,
directors and producers. I did this as it is key to add this information in at the end of films so the
audience can identify and follow artists whose contribution has pleased them. In addition to this,
in regards to the music, I had to download a soundtrack from the internet which was copyright
free to prevent any copyright strikes and then insert it on Premiere Pro over my clips so that I
was able to edit the clips toward the soundtrack as the film itself is non-diegetic therefore there
is no sound being played from the scenes for the audience to hear, just the editors.
C4 Final Cut
Once I had completed editing my film, I needed to render it all so that it ran at the same quality
and everything played well therefore it would play smoothly and as it was intended. Once it was
rendered, I needed to export the film into a viewable video file so that I was able to view it,
therefore I needed to go on the main menu and click FILE/EXPORT/MEDIAwhich lead me to
click format so I was able to choose the media type I would like my film to encode too. When
saving the video I needed to change the output name to the name of my film and then I was
able to export the video file successfully and upload it to my YouTube.
