3. INTRODUCTION
“Code of Practise for Road Markings”, IRC;35-1970
was published by the Indian Roads Congress (IRC) in
1970.
This code revised and the modified draft was
approved by the executive committee in its meeting
held on 19.4.1995.
Road Markings perform an import function of
guiding and controlling traffic on a highway.

4. SCOPE
The object of this Code of Practice is to establish a uniform
system for road marking in India with paints/thermoplastic
material.
Recommendations of the code are applicable to all categories
of roads both in rural and urban areas.

5. DEFINITION
Road markings are defined as lines, patterns, words
or other devices, except signs, set into applied or
attached to the carriageway or kerbs or to objects
within or adjacent to the carriageway, for
controlling, warning, guiding and informing the
users.

6. AUTHORITY
A uniform set of markings applicable throughout the
country.
Road markings on a particular stretch of public road
should be decided by Road Authorities in consultation
with Police, wherever felt necessary.
Pavement and kerb markings being exclusively within
the boundaries of public road should be installed by
public authority.

7. MATERIALS
Paints used for road markings should conform to IS
: 164-1981 “Specifications for ready mixed paints
for road markings”.
Improved night visibility in Road Markings is
obtained by the use of minute glass beads.

The road markings may be classified as:
