5. What is a patent?
Patents
A patent for an invention is granted by
government to the inventor, giving the inventor
the right to stop others, for a limited period,
from making, using or selling the invention
without their permission.
source
6. To be patentable an invention must:
Be new
Be useful
Be capable of industrial application
Be non-obvious
Patents
7. Much information only available in patents
Empirical studies indicate that around 80% of all the
information contained in patent documents cannot be
found anywhere else.
Patents have a uniform structure throughout the world.
Almost all patents can be viewed free of charge.
Companies often do not want to disclose their new
product development activities and do not publicly report
such information.
Patents
8. Rights granted to a patent
To prevent third parties from manufacturing,
using, selling or importing offender products in
the country where the patent was granted.
To sell the rights of the patent.
During a maximum time of 20 years from the
date of application of the patent.
Patents
10. 25% of all R&D efforts…
are wasted each year on inventions that have already been invented
Don’t start your R&D until you have done a
search!

13. Patent searching
Describe your idea
What does it do?
What is the end product or effect?
What is it made of?
What is it used for?
Find relevant classes and subclasses

21. Depending on the database we may find:
Bibliographic references + abstract
Bibliographic references + full text
Bibliographic databases
22. Why use databases?
Databases provide access to high quality, up-to-date
information from respected publishers and publications.
They provide sophisticated search capabilities and access
in many instances to online full-text articles.
Bibliographic databases
source
23. Database contents have been reviewed. Usually they
include a selection of the most important publications on a
specific area.
Some of them are multidisciplinary (e.g. Scopus, Web of
Knowledge) and other are specialized on specific topics:
(e.g. World Textiles is specialized in industry and textile
technology)
We can find different types of documents: journal
articles, standards, patents, news, conference
proceedings…
Bibliographic databases
28. Access to databases and other licensed information
resources
Allows to consult the electronic resources subscribed by
UPC Libraries (electronic journals, databases, ebooks
collections…).
Authentication is made with username and password
from UPC Intranet (the same as Atenea)
Press the eBIB button that you installed in your sidebar if
you are accessing the resource through an external search
engine (e.g. Google), a shortcut, a bookmark or a website
(Bibliotècnica, Publica!, Atenea or the University Union
Catalogue of Catalonia (CCUC), etc.).
Bibliographic databases
29. eBIB : access to the electronic resources
of the UPC’s digital library
eBIB is the service that improves access to the electronic
resources of the UPC's digital library (books, journals and
databases) from and from outside UPC.
30. SCOPUS –what is it?
Scopus is the largest abstract and citation database of peer-
reviewed literature: scientific journals, books and conference
proceedings.
Bibliographic databases
31. SCOPUS
Bibliographic databases
Find relevant articles of a particular subject area
Finding who is citing you and knowing how many citations of an article
or of a particular author you have received
Use the information reached to complete the bibliography of the article
that you want to publish
Reviewing the work and the citations from other authors
Clicking on the citations and the references to follow the trends of
research in or out of the disciplines which you are interested in
32. This article cites documents:
- To the bibliography
- Footnotes pages
- Inside text references
Other articles will cite it:

38. Compendex–what is it?
Compendex is a primary database of core literature
of the engineering fields. From 1970 till today
citations are drawn from approximately 6,000
journals and key conference proceedings. Weekly
updates

45. UPCommons is the gateway that provides open access
to the knowledge of UPC. It is formed by the group of
UPC open institutional repositories and its aim is to
guarantee the safeguarding of the material produced
by lecturers and researchers at the University,
maximizing their visibility and, consequently, increasing
its impact on education and research worldwide.
Institutional repositories
46. If you have authorized it expressly
If the work does not infringe the industrial rights and
intellectual property of a third party
If there is not any possible application of a patent that takes
on the content of the work
If there is not any agreement of valid confidentiality with a
third party (e.g. companies or publishers)
Can I deposit my Master Thesis to
UPCommons?

Therefore, the owners of the intellectual property of
the academic works directed or coordinated
by UPC faculties are the student authors. They
are also the ones who can decide if they wish to
reproduce, distribute, communicate publicly,
transform and/or transfer the rights of
exploitation to third.

50. Finding journals
If you know the journal title enter it into the Title search field
If you don’t know the journal title enter a partial journal title or word
into the Keyword search field o search by subject
If an e-journal is available, you will see the e-journal title and a link
