Policy context - mandate
• Council conclusions of Oct 2013 called for EU action to
provide the right framework conditions for a single market
for big data and cloud computing
• Towards a Thriving Data-Driven Economy COM(2014)442 –
framework conditions for a data-based economy in the EU –
mandate for the PPP
• A Digital Single Market Strategy for Europe COM(2015)192,
Third Pillar: launch of a Free Flow of Data Initiative
• Digitisation of European Industry COM(2016)180 – Big Data
is an important contributor/element in the DEI
• Communication & legislative proposal: Building a European
Data Economy (coming up by the end of 2016)

8. Agriculture is hot topic in H2020 ICT
 Big Data Lighthouse project – the 2016 call
 A lighthouse project (over 10 MEUR) currently under grant preparation
in the domain of agriculture, forestry, fisheries
 Planned project start 1/1/2017
 IoT large scale pilot in Smart Farming & food security
 Large scale (about 30 MEUR) innovation action currently under grant
preparation
 Precision farming
 Tracking and following the entire food life-cycle from farm to fork
 Planned project start: 1/1/2017
 What about SC2?
 Discussions on cooperation with SC2 have been on since the beginning
of H2020, good progress has been reached
 Now there is a good opportunity to introduce a Big Data topic for WP
2018-20 – in close collaboration between CNECT, RTD and AGRI 8
